The Phantom Of the Opera (2004) Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, & Patrick Wilson

The Phantom Of the Opera (2004) Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, & Patrick Wilson
Book Vs. Movie “Musicals in March”
The 1911 Novel The Phantom of the Opera Vs the 2004 Joel Schumacher Film

The Margos close out “Musicals in March” with one of the most popular musicals of all time--The Phantom of the Opera. Originally created in 1911 by French journalist and bon vivant Gaston Leroux, the story is based on stories about the Paris Opera in the 1800s which include hauntings aplenty. His creation is about Phantom Erik (!) who is an “Opera Ghost” madly in love with soprano Christine.

The complicated tale of Christine, the “Angel of Music,” her childhood friend Raoul, a performance of Faust, and flooding in the basement of the Palais Garnier involves love, intrigue, some objectification, and imprisonment. The 1925 movie starring Lon Chaney just barely scratched the surface so we turn to the unofficial King of Musicals--Andrew Lloyd Weber who along with lyricist Charles Hart created one of the most successful productions in Broadway and West End history.

The 2004 film was directed by the late Joel Schumacher. It’s lush, gorgeous, and filled with talented actors.

So, between the original story and the 2014 musical adaptation--which did we prefer?

In this ep the Margos discuss:
    The author Gaston Leroux
Paris in the early 20th Century
The differences between the novella and musical
The cast includes Gerard Butler (The Phantom,) Emmy Rossum (Christine,) Patrick Wilson (Raoul,) Minnie Driver (Carlotta,) Simon Callow (Gilles,) and Victor McGuire (Ubaldo.)

    Clips used:
    Opening scene of the movie
The Phantom of the Opera (the 2004 trailer)
    “I Remember Stranger…”
    “Why So Silent”
    “All I Ask of You”
    Carlotta sings
    Music by Andrew Lloyd Weber

3' grezzi Ep. 88 JC Superstar
Certi film, rivisti a distanza, deludono. Altri continuano a deliziare. E a quel punto mi commuovo.

Episode 1148 - Comic Beat Insider: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - WHYYYYYYYYYY?!!!!

Episode 1148 - Comic Beat Insider: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - WHYYYYYYYYYY?!!!!

In our 43rd episode of COMIC BEAT INSIDER (CBI), Jimmy and Heidi MacDonald (The Beat Chief) are joined by Erin Crosby (Forbidden Broadway) and Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) to discuss the 1973 classic rock opera film JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. What are some of our favorite moments? What was changed from the stage version? Was it all a ruse to leave Ted Neeley behind? Where did they find Yvonne Elliman? What's unique about the film's last shot? And did we sing the entire show while Zooming? Join us each week to listen in live. Send in topic ideas for future episodes. Be it in comics, TV or film. Also, get a hold of us!

    Thanks for listening!

19: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's weird lil man hands (& other musicals)

The all-Cats episode awakened something in your hosts, and this week they're dishing up a deeper dive into musical theatre.

Joining us this week are special guests Bea Miranda and Ezra Reaves. Will they be able to figure out how pinball they are (and also how musicals are pinball)? Maybe!

Topics discussed include: Little Shop of Horrors, Evil Dead: the Musical, Gypsy, Jesus Christ Superstar, the pop-punk musical pantheon, and movies that became musicals that became movies,.

16: JELLICLES CAN, AND JELLICLES DO (JELLICLES DO AND JELLICLES WOULD)

16: JELLICLES CAN, AND JELLICLES DO (JELLICLES DO AND JELLICLES WOULD)

You might be tempted to think: "Ah, yes, another regular ol' episode with these three dummies."

But in this episode, we talk about Cats the musical.

Buckle up: all three of your hosts have lots of opinions about those horny singing felines, Andrew Lloyd Webber's feelings about God, the unholy abomination that is Cats the musical: the movie, and how pinball it all is.

Also in this episode: Skyrim en espagnol, literally the first five minutes of Death Stranding, and more about Cats.

    Aspects of Love

    Aspects of Love

This week we are taking on one of the true titans of musical theater: Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Aspects of Love was a smash success in the West End, but Broadway audiences did not fall in love with this 1990 show the same way as their British counterparts. Tune in for everything from 90s album art to a salute to Captain Tom.

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats (Crooked Commentary #5) (feat. Kai Yaniz)

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats (Crooked Commentary #5) (feat. Kai Yaniz)

As soon as we caught a glimpse of the infamous first trailer for Cats, we knew it would be a perfect addition to our Crooked Commentary series. After all, we've talked about some great films in the last few installments, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and When Harry Met Sally... So it's about time we get Crooked Commentary back to awesomely bad movies like The Room.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), Cats assembles an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, and Taylor Swift. Unfortunately, it also uses bizarre computer-generated "digital fur" effects and bears essentially no plot to speak of. Still, we found ourselves unable to look away.

Kai Yaniz, once again -- this time more begrudgingly than usual -- returns for this very "jellicle" Crooked Commentary episode. So get a saucer of milk and prepare to meet Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity, Skimbleshanks, and the rest of the gang. This is one "memory" you won't soon forget. We're not sure whether a great movie could have ever been made from Andrew Lloyd Webber's bizarre musical. But we're pretty sure this isn't it. It's Cats, baby!

    SYNOPSIS

A tribe of cats must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
