Dog anxiety often leads to behaviors that results in frustration for pet parents, leading to surrender or euthanasia. There are a plethora of approaches to address it, so how do you choose the best one for you and your dog?  

Anxiety is an emotion, not a behavior.  It is essential to apply a method that acknowledges emotions, taking an approach whereby we do not suppress the emotion, but rather, provides skills to regulate, process, and replace "harmful" emotions with positive ones. 

In this episode, I introduce Emotional Replacement Therapy. I address common changes that occur as we work our way through the program, and discuss "coping mechanisms" and "impulse control"

I recently took two puppies in off a reserve and here is what I learned!   By understating puppy training and braining , we can better understand how different methods are effective at different stages.

Meet Jonesy and Jackson, 3 month old puppies who are very different from each other. How are methods adapted? Why is it important to view training as bonding and harnessing cognitive skills, as opposed to "tick the boxes".

This benefit took place November 19th at Piper's Pub in Pompano Beach. In one day, we raised over $7200 to help the Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue and Hospital. Their goal is to build a shelter on a plot of land where the animals can frolic while awaiting their furever home.

Me, Kimba and co-organizer Jimi Robinette (JIMBA) took a tour of the facility so that people would get a bit more insight as to where they were donating .

About the guest author:

Dr. Catherine Raven is a former national park ranger at Glacier, Mount Rainier, North Cascades, Voyageurs, and Yellowstone national parks. She earned a PhD in biology from Montana State University, holds degrees in zoology and botany from the University of Montana, and is a member of American Mensa and Sigma Xi (which I had to look up and discovered translates to Companions in Zealous Research.) Her natural history essays have appeared in American Scientist, Journal of American Mensa, and Montana Magazine. 

About the host:

Holly Lynn Payne is an award-winning novelist and writing coach, and the former CEO and founder of Booxby, a startup built to help authors succeed. She is the author of four historical fiction novels, and her debut novel, The Virgin's Knot,was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book.
