The Football Letter Podcast Special: Beaver Stadium PA Announcers Rodney Martin and Joe Putnam

Each week during the Penn State Football season, we're bringing you a bonus podcast in our People of Penn State podcast series, featuring interviews with Nittany Lion lettermen and volunteer leaders who bring the mission of the Alumni Association to life.

In episode two of The Football Letter Podcast, we spoke to new Beaver Stadium public address announcers, Rodney Martin and Joe Putnam!

Many Nittany Lion fans are already familiar with Rodney and Joe, with each of them having been a part of the communications/broadcasting scene in Happy Valley for several years. Rodney is the voice of Penn State Ice Hockey at Pegula Ice Arena, while Joe has worked as a co-commentator for Penn State Lady Lion Basketball.

The duo also has significant experience working together for minor league baseball team, the State College Spikes, where Rodney is the PA announcer and Joe is the Director of Communications/play-by-play lead.

During this conversation, Rodney and Joe discuss the personal significance in earning their new roles, what the production process has been like, the importance of their chemistry on game days, and a lot more.

Behind the Mic: A Deep Dive into the Life of Race Announcers Carissa Galloway and John Pelkey

Behind the Mic: A Deep Dive into the Life of Race Announcers Carissa Galloway and John Pelkey

Ever wondered what it's like being a race announcer? Pour yourself a cup of joe and join us as we pull back the curtain on our early mornings, the buckets of coffee we chug, our fears about triathlons, and even a quirky game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. We also answer ten questions about ourselves - giving you, our listeners, an inside look into who we are, our favorite Disney movies, and the most peculiar jobs we've had. Spoiler alert - one of us was Gumby at Gumby's Pizza!

Running - it's a journey of blood, sweat, and sometimes tears. It's also a journey that brings a deep sense of accomplishment. We share personal stories about my wife's initial meeting with Carissa and running my first 5K on a broken toe. But we don't stop there. We explore the evolution of runDisney at Disneyland, from its humble beginnings to the transformation brought about by social media. Our conversation further leads us to discuss the Boston Marathon and the unique challenges of announcing the race. We've both got big goals in the race announcing industry, and if you're curious about what they are, you'll have to tune in.

We round up our chat by discussing the power of perseverance and the inspirational stories we've encountered. We invite you, our listeners, to share your tales of triumph. Whether it's choosing the best apple from a variety or overcoming adversity, we're here to celebrate and share your stories. We believe in the power of narratives to connect, inspire, and uplift. So tune in every two weeks for more running chat, a few laughs, and lots of motivation. Join us as we navigate the thrilling world of race announcing and running together.

You know him already as the play-by-play guy for the Elyria High School Pioneer Marching Band but maybe you didn't know his name. He's Bob Putka, and he holds the coveted spot as the voice of the band. "One thing I've found in Elyria is people really like their band, and they get very excited. You can hear it in the stands. So, it feels good to be able to do that for people who appreciate the kids performing and appreciate their band," Putka said. "The kids deserve someone who's excited for them and it reflects the community's excitement for them." Bob's son, Aaron Putka, is the Director of the Elyria High School Pioneer Marching Band. Bob is a retired teacher of the arts who spent 46 years in public education. Barnesy, Parrots and Planes (Week Thirty)

Barnesy, Parrots and Planes (Week Thirty)
My bestie and former roomie from Karratha, Lisa (aka Boofie, which is short for bouffant, because in 1990 Lisa had a news reading demo video where the cameraman actually cut the top of her head off, and when she showed it to me I asked her "what was out of shot, a bouffant?". Then Boofie became Lisa's nickname because apparently EVERYONE I met had to be given a stupid nickname by teenage me...grrr but also hehe) anyway Boofie returns for this episode which is filled with everything from screaming parrots and airline traffic, to more behind the scenes gossip about Lisa's time interviewing Barnesy with my guest from Episode 28, Jonesy. If you've heard that episode, you'll remember Jonesy saying he'd encouraged Lisa not to wear a short skirt to that Jimmy Barnes interview, which Lisa confirms and then reveals more hilarity I'd never heard before. Also coming up in this episode, Bradley comes to say goodbye, but where is he going, and who even is he, and why don’t I remember any of those things? Teenage me also gets sold out by an office snitch and then I get a lecture on my taste in music, I also wash my clothes for the first time since my Mum left, which is kinda gross. There's excitement when I request a 2 week holiday from my boss Neville for November, and naturally I decide to go on a diet AGAIN. I also see a bunch more movies and actually enjoy doing a few live crosses to interview recreational fishers in a fishing competition, who even am I? Anyway there's a lot to process once again, plus you'll also get a bonus story from my early teenage years revealing how devoted to lip syncing I was, well before RuPaul delivered us Drag Race, thankfully there is no footage, just the memories of those that managed to witness the extravaganza and me obviously hehe.
