Cooking without Smell...What now? An Interview with Mimi Ellis

In the kitchen today we have Mimi Ellis, a big picture dietitian who’s practice is all about helping people with anosmia and parosmia. If you don’t know what these invisible illnesses are, it’s a decrease/lack of taste and/or smell. She shares her personal experience with a post viral anosmia and how it shifted her to practice as a dietitian for the second time (She was a RD then became a PA then an RD again!) and help people cook delicious meals while working to restore their sense of taste and smell. Enjoy!

    Olfactory Disorders

    Olfactory Disorders

    Olfactory

This week we will discuss olfactory disorders, or problems with smelling either good or bad chemicals, foods, fragrances, and the like.  Did you know your sense of smell also affects your taste? A damaged sense of olfaction is severely disrupting: the joy of eating and drinking may be lost, and depression may result. There could also be dangers associated with the loss of smell, including the inability to detect leaking gas or spoiled food.  More than 2.7 million people in the United States have an olfactory disorder, and this is likely an underestimate. Some people have suggested that about half of people over the age of 60 have a decreased sense of smell.

Why does everything taste rotten after Covid?

Why does everything taste rotten after Covid?
Why, after a dose of Covid-19, am I left with a new taste sensation resembling rotten onions? Why does bleached hair look blond, not white, and does salt water decolour the hair of surfers? How do I get rid of unwanted facial hair? Why is the hole my dog digs bigger than the dirt or sand that came out of it!? Why do mosquitoes prefer me to my wife? Does lighting a match do away with the smell of poo? Dr Chris and Lester Kiewit have the answers... Like this podcast? Please help us by supporting the Naked Scientists
