    88. Navigating Food During Hard Times

    88. Navigating Food During Hard Times

In this episode, Sammy shares tips on how to navigate your relationship with food if you have experienced Parosmia (distorted sense of smell) or a tough season where even the thought of food is completely unappetizing.

This happens commonly in postpartum, seasons of grief, or taste/smell loss due to COVID. We have received so many messages from our community requesting tips on how to nourish yourself when you have no taste, your taste buds have changed, etc. So to say this podcast episode is overdue is an understatement! We are so excited to bring this conversation over to the FFF podcast.

She shares her personal experience with a post viral anosmia and how it shifted her to practice as a dietitian for the second time (She was a RD then became a PA then an RD again!) and help people cook delicious meals while working to restore their sense of taste and smell. Olfactory Disorders

    Olfactory Disorders

    Olfactory

This week we will discuss olfactory disorders, or problems with smelling either good or bad chemicals, foods, fragrances, and the like.  Did you know your sense of smell also affects your taste? A damaged sense of olfaction is severely disrupting: the joy of eating and drinking may be lost, and depression may result. There could also be dangers associated with the loss of smell, including the inability to detect leaking gas or spoiled food.  More than 2.7 million people in the United States have an olfactory disorder, and this is likely an underestimate. Some people have suggested that about half of people over the age of 60 have a decreased sense of smell.

Parosmia and how a carnivore diet can help with Serena Musick

Parosmia and how a carnivore diet can help with Serena Musick

Serena Musick @carnivore.running.mom is a wife, mother, an essential oils educator and advocate, a runner, a carnivore and a long haul post covid sufferer with Parosmia.

In this episode we talk about Serena's health journey from weight loss, sugar and carb addiction, restless leg syndrome.
How she came to the carnivore diet and the results she has had so far.
Her experience with Parosmia and how it has affected her day to day life.
Improvements with her conditions since going carnivore and the things she has learned along the way.

Many people are developing long-haul post covid symptoms such as parosmia and parosmia is directly linked to contracting the virus.
Parosmia is described as a type of smell disorder in which odors become distorted. For example something that once smelled pleasant may smell bad or rotten to a person suffering from parosmia. Because smell and taste are so closely related, parosmia can have a negative impact on taste and eating. For someone with parosmia, foods that were previously appetizing can become unpalatable.
