John Hawkins - Britain's First Slave Trader

John Hawkins - Britain's First Slave Trader

Our first episode, will go way back to the early seed of British Imperialism planted in the mid-16th Century. Join us as we lay out the story of John Hawkins, whose singular obsession of trading enslaved Africans to Spanish American colonies will bring an ignored and uncultured Northern European Queendom into direct conflict with the world's first global super-power.

The early days of the horrific industry known as the Atlantic slave trade will be laid bare.  How and why it developed, and its central role in building the framework of the early  British Empire.

So join us to find out how a British capitalist invented the Triangular Trade, and why Queen Elizabeth I gave it the full backing of the British crown. On the lighter side, you will also learn why the British got the Sweet Potato years before they ever tasted a Potato and the disappointing realities of historical ship names. All before the Spanish Empire intervenes and brings the enterprise to a fiery end.

Join Gruff and Chris, as we examine the first brick laid in the building of the British Empire.

    S4 E24: Empire and Imperialism

    S4 E24: Empire and Imperialism

In a time where all colonization is deemed 100% evil and racist, Alan Ryan gives a very nuanced account of imperialism, and that is where our discussion takes us in this episode! We look at the ancient Roman concept of empire, the various justifications that were given for European imperialism in the 16th and 17th centuries, and more modern anti-imperialist thinkers. We cover such people and topics as Francisco de Vitoria, the Valladolid Debate, Emerich Vattel, Lenin, Frantz Fanon, Sayyad Qutb, and more!  You can follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions

Part II: Star Wars as Anti-Imperialism? The Politics of George Lucas, w/ Daniel Immerwahr | Ep. 137

In Part II of Van's sit-down w/ Professor Daniel Immerwahr (author of How to Hide an Empire), they talk about Daniel's recent chapter about the politics and ideology of George Lucas's Star Wars. Was the Galactic Republic really an empire the entire time? What made Star Wars a Vietnam movie? What's the deal with the Ewok? And what's wrong with Lucas's version of anti-imperialism?

What Is Happening In Haiti? Us Intervention And The Fight For Sovereignty

What Is Happening In Haiti? Us Intervention And The Fight For Sovereignty

For the past 4 years, the Haitian people have continuously mobilized in protest against inhumane living standards, rapid inflation and skyrocketing fuel prices, and most recently, rejecting calls for foreign intervention and demanding the resignation of U.S.-backed Prime Minister Ariel Henry. As significant sectors of the US media and foreign policy elite prepare the ground for further intervention, we ask, what would military intervention mean for the Haitian people?  What has led to the protracted crisis we are witnessing today? What does the Haitian fight for sovereignty look like, and what do the people demand?

Listen to this conversation with historian Vijay Prashad, Haitian-American professor and activist Mamyrah Prosper and on-the-ground journalist Jackson Jean as they give us insight into the reality of the crisis in Haiti and the state of the people’s struggle.

    The Apokalypse of Settler Colonialism

    The Apokalypse of Settler Colonialism

Dr. Horne’s books ‘The Apocalypse of Settler Colonialism’ and ‘The Dawning of the Apocalypse’ are essential readings in understanding the original sins of empire, the worlds that settler colonialism precluded, and the apokalyptic transformation the world is experiencing today. Our conversation moves across subjects of colonial technology and weaponry, Africa's underdevelopment, and how our material conditions within empire are directly tied to the material conditions across the African continent and diaspora.

Dr. Horne also candidly reflects on his own writing process, how he’s such a prolific and productive writer and activist, and the stakes of doing rigorous work as a peoples historian. Give it a listen and let us know your thoughts in the comments!

30 | Baseball as a Mediated Latinidad and Latino Threat Narratives in MLB with Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph

30 | Baseball as a Mediated Latinidad and Latino Threat Narratives in MLB with Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph

Miguel welcomed Dr. Jennifer L. Rudolph to the podcast to discuss Baseball as Mediated Latinidad, including racist Latino Threat Narratives in baseball that are a microcosm of US white supremacy society.

Dr. Rudolph is an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College and author of Baseball as Mediated Latinidad: Race, Masculinity, Nationalism, and performance of Identity. Dr. Rudolph's research interests include U.S. Latino expressive cultures, Latino identity formation, transnationalism, urban studies, and teaching Spanish to heritage/native speakers.

First, Miguel asked Dr. Rudolph why it was essential for her to analyze new forms of media, such as social media, for her book, Baseball as Mediated Latinidad? Second, Miguel also asked Jennifer about her opening chapter, "La crema de Sammy Sosa," and her analysis of legendary Dominican and former Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa. Specifically, Miguel asked Jennifer to explain how specific events tied to Sosa's career and post-career intersected with race, class, and gender issues.

Next, Miguel and Dr. Rudolph discussed the controversy regarding Marc Anthony singing the national anthem at the 2013 all-star game and how it was another example of Anthropologist Leo Chavez's Latino Threat Narrative. Miguel and Dr. Rudolph also discuss how the World Baseball Classic and the 2017 Puerto Rico National team connect to nationalism, race, assimilation, and masculinity. For example, Dr. Rudolph discussed how her analysis of the Puerto Rican national team showed the contradictions between Latinos perceived as threats by white fans instead of representing nationalistic pride to Puerto Rican fans.

Furthermore, Miguel asked Jennifer about the connections between baseball, language, and racialized capitalism. Lastly, Miguel asked Jennifer about her chapter on Major League Baseball's development, labor structure, and practices at their academias in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Dr. Rudolph summarized the system and explained how they resemble the history of US imperialism and colonialism in Latin America.

To end the podcast, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 30, the legendary Pittsburgh Pirate and Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente. Tragically, Roberto Clemente passed away in a plane crash 49 years ago today, on New Years' Eve 1972, while providing h

29 | Enes Kanter, Sinophobia, and Anti-China Narratives in Sports with Danny Haiphong

29 | Enes Kanter, Sinophobia, and Anti-China Narratives in Sports with Danny Haiphong

We are back! Miguel welcomed Independent Journalist Danny Haiphong (@SpiritofHo) to discuss Enes Kanter, Sinophobia, and Anti-China Narratives in sports.

Danny Haiphong is an anti-imperialist independent journalist and researcher in the US. He is a contributing editor to the Black Agenda Report, co-host of the Left Lens, and co-editor of Friends of Socialist China.

Subscribe to Danny Haiphong’s Substack and Patreon.

First, Danny and Miguel discuss Enes Kanter's anti-China crusade, and Danny chronicles how Kanter is a member of the Gulen movement. The Gulen movement is a conservative Islamist Fraternal organization founded by Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, who fled to the US in 1998. Gulen currently resides on 25 acres of land in rural Pennsylvania, and the Turkish government considers Gulen a CIA asset.

Danny and Miguel also discuss the US Diplomatic Boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, fueled by the continued US claims of China committing Human Rights violations. However, the allegations originate from erroneous, right-wing sources connected to the US state department.  Miguel also asked Danny about the importance of covering China from an anti-imperialist perspective and more!

Additionally, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 29, LeBron James. The King responded to Enes Kanter’s criticism, and I enjoyed this segment. Lastly, Miguel gives you this episode's Chicano/Chicana sports history segment. Miguel highlights Ma Jin, a Chinese Diving Coach who has been the Head Coach of Mexico’s Olympic diving team since 2003.
