VAMPIRES 12 • Interview with the Vampire (1994) + Queen of the Damned (2002)

VAMPIRES 12 • Interview with the Vampire (1994) + Queen of the Damned (2002)

Part of our new series devoted to exploring the vampire in horror cinema, we go deep on two cinematic adaptations of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.

First up, Neil Jordan's 1994 adaptation of Interview with the Vampire is a gothic masterpiece that has influenced counteless vampire films since. We also discuss its unfortunate sequel, Queen of the Damned, which came in 2007 starring Stuart Townsend as the vampire Lestat and Aaliyah as Akasha, the titular Queen of the Damned.

Joining us in this episode is film critic Kelli Weston. We discuss the themes of Interview with the Vampire, the softboi energy of Louis, the monstrosity of Claudia the child vampire and the queer reading of the film.

Be warned: the section on Queen of the Damned includes dramatic readings of Lestat's band's lyrics.

The Thirteenth Episode (The 13th Warrior, The Thirteenth Floor, Assault on Precinct 13)

The Thirteenth Episode (The 13th Warrior, The Thirteenth Floor, Assault on Precinct 13)

One might assume that our 13th episode may automatically be about the Common Craig's favorite slasher movie series. But NO! It's not Friday the 13th on the calendar, so that would be sacrilege! So, instead, we have a trio of AMASS OR MURDER segments, featuring three completely unrelated movies! Well, with one exception. They all share the number 13 in their titles. First up, Antonio Banderas is pretty much forced to hang out with a bunch of vikings in The 13th Warrior, to the extent that he even has to learn their language! Ah, the wonders of communication. They even want him to drink their spit and snot! Then, Nicole would probably prefer to drink spit or snot (actually, that's highly unlikely) rather than suffer through another viewing of the oft forgotten The Thirteenth Floor. And then from there, John Carpenter serves up a rumble, as convicts and law enforcement officers form an uneasy alliance, in a battle for survival against a bloodthirsty street gang, in the original Assault on Precinct 13!

The Reel: 'Parasite': A thrill ride about class warfare

The Reel: 'Parasite': A thrill ride about class warfare

“Parasite” is poised to be South Korea’s first-ever nomination for Best International feature, but it also looks to be competitive for best director, original screenplay and even best picture.

Rave reviews have poured in for the darkly comedic drama about social inequality, with some critics calling it director’s Bong Joon Ho’s masterpiece.

The much-anticipated movie is now out in limited release, and host Mark Olsen (@IndieFocus) talks with film critic Justin Chang (@JustinCChang) and film reporter Jen Yamato. (@jenyamato)

Chang says “Parasite” is one of the best heist movies he has seen in quite some time, and he compares Bong to a conductor masterfully conducting a symphony.

Yamato says the class warfare themes in the film will be recognizable to everyone.

In our new culture news segment, Olsen discusses the official opening of Tyler Perry Studios with reporter Greg Braxton. (@GeBraxton)

And in the “Glenn Whipp Awards Minute,” Whipp (@GlennWhipp) gives the state of the best actor race after the openings of “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, and “Pain and Glory,” starring Antonio Banderas.

    23. Shrek the Third (2007)

    23. Shrek the Third (2007)

Diane and I talk about Shrek the Third after watching it for the first time...ever. We don't know why this movie exists or how we came to own it. We also don't know how monarchies work or the Legend of King Arthur. Episode music is "Royal Pain" by Eels, and "Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again)" by Sly and the Family Stone, performed by Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas.
