EP 09: How to Heal Your Body With Plants Featuring Herbalist Rachelle Robinett

Rachelle Robinett is an herbalist, holistic health practitioner and this week’s guest on the Our Nature Podcast. After spending many years working in marketing in the fashion industry, Rachelle transitioned into her greatest passion - herbs and plant-based medicine. In this episode we talk all about Western Herbalism, the use of teas, tinctures and decoctions, which herbs are overrated (hello adaptogens and CBD) and which are underrated (nervines), why the millennial generation is suffering from an epidemic of chronic disease, and practical things each of us can do to feel healthier. If you’ve ever been curious about Western Herbalism, this episode is for you. If you’ve been contemplating a career transition or are hesitant to fully step into your calling, this episode is also for you. Rachelle is a bright light in the wellness space and I can’t wait for you to hear her wisdom!

“If a person is willing to make themselves a cup of tea, it’s likely they’ll get better in your care because it shows that they’re willing to set aside the time to take care of their health.”

“It’s [herbalism] a way of looking at the world where you just see the natural world as a companion, and as our foundation, as opposed to all the other ways it can be seen.”

“There’s a massive disconnect from our bodies – being able to hear them, being about to understand what we’re hearing, and having any idea what to do about that.”

“It’s challenging and liberating to experience being able to experience the world without all of our crutches, even if they are good ones, for a period of time.”

Megan Fuhrman Wheeler on Manifesting a Dream and creating an Herbal Community

Megan Fuhrman-Wheeler is a phenomenal herbalist and artist who started an apothecary in Spirit Lake, Iowa. We talk about her path with herbs and how she has gained clarity about her path through her healing journey and has visualized and created a thriving business that helps her community.

    Bio:
I am Megan, the owner of MEGAN & CO. Herbal Apothecary and Clinic.

My path to herbalism was paved out of personal experience. As a child, I was in diagnosed with epilepsy at age of 10. Most of my childhood was spent juggling different pharmaceuticals with the hopes of calming my seizures. By the time I had reach my mid twenties, I was looking for another path and that road was herbalism.

I attended the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism from 2014-2016. Through herbalism and nutrition I was able to heal myself, as I had never done before. My personal experiences strengthened me and I soon became determined to share these methods with others.

I opened MEGAN & CO. in June of 2017 as a Certified Clinical Herbalist, a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, and Flower Essence Practitioner. It is my hope that the Apothecary is able to spread herbal knowledge to rural America in a safe, constructive, and accessible manner.

Thank you for loving herbs! I sure do.

012 // Lauren Patchett // Timing Is Everything

012 // Lauren Patchett // Timing Is Everything

Lauren is like so many of us. After finishing high school she attended university only to realize that she didn't particularly love school and she didn't know what she wanted to do after graduating.

    Sound familiar?

Having grown up spending her summers working in a variety of small businesses in a small cottage town in Northern Ontario called Honey Harbour, Lauren was presented with an opportunity. An opportunity that not only gave her life the direction she had longed for but unlocked a newfound sense of passion and drive.

Now, 5 years later, after opening "The Hive" in Honey Harbour, which is now considered to be a destination on Georgian Bay, Lauren has opened her second location, just across the bay in the popular ski town of Collingwood.

It hasn't been an easy journey, as Lauren shares with us in the episode, but it has been worth it.

    Restore, Renew and Reparations

This week we revisit a show from the archives, Adaku Utah, founder of healing collective Harriet's Apothecary, and J Bob Alotta, executive director of the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, which supports grassroots LGBTQ efforts across the globe. Utah and Alotta discuss what healing and healing justice would look like for communities under attack and in particular, for trans women of color and gender non conforming people. It's not enough to fund direct action or leadership training, say our guests; activist organizations have a responsibility to help their concerned communities heal from trauma, and to empower them towards fellowship and autonomy. Adaku Utah is a master herbalist, educator, and artist who is "armed with the legacies of a long line of healers, witches, priestesses and fearless women who refused to shut up." J Bob Alotta is a filmmaker, global activist, and one of the organizers of the Women's March on Washington.

Restore, Renew and Reparations: Adaku Utah and J Bob Alotta on Healing Justice

The chorus for radical action demands a versatile effort: it needs people power, initiative, and funding, but if we're caught between offense and defense, how do we take time to insure the well-being of our most vulnerable communities?
