Ciccio parla facile!

Interview with Margo Puffenberger, Art Director & Graphic Designer

Interview with Margo Puffenberger, Art Director & Graphic Designer

Margo is an Art Director, Graphic Designer, and entrepreneur.  She’s THE graphic design consultant who created what I needed for my business, starting with a logo.  I love her work!  She’s a very passionate designer who loves anything creative. Her experience, love for design, and solid foundation in minimalist design allows her to provide her clients (like me!) with simple, consistent, compelling, and engaging designs.  She has been easy to work with from the start, and I feel lucky to have found her.  Her process is easy to follow; her artwork fits my needs; and, I would recommend Margo Puffenberger to anyone looking for artwork for their company logo, podcast, social media banners, online course, book cover, audiobook cover, or other projects.

During our conversation, you’ll hear how Margo uses her voice to help others with their graphic design needs.  For more information about Margo and examples of her work, please visit her website:  https://www.designbymep.com.

    Highlights from the Interview

Margo and I met in-person at a business expo in Northwest Ohio, which is where we both live.  Thank you Linda Fayerweather from the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library for sending me Margo’s way!

Margo and I have been working well together for about 4 years, and our first project was the logo for The Pharmacist’s Voice ®.  She also created my business cards, stationery, envelopes, podcast artwork, social media banners, and the artwork for my online course.

Examples of Margo’s work include print designs, logos, signage, and more.  Visit https://www.designbymep.com to learn more.

At my request, Margo to included a copyright release in the contract for the artwork she created for me.  That way, the designs belong to The Pharmacist’s Voice ®.  However, she has permission to use my designs as examples in her portfolio.

What are some tips for finding the right graphic designer?

    1. Do a Google search for graphic designers in your area.  Get a feel for them.  Does their portfolio have artwork you like the look of?  Are you drawn to their artwork and style?
    2. When styles between client and graphic designer are very different, it can take longer to get to the final goal due to frustration, miscommunications, omitted follow-up questions, and assumptions about the process.  Choose the right designer for you.
    3. Go with someone who meets your budget needs.
    4. A clear process is important.  Example: initial conversation, first concepts, rounds of revisions, final files, billing, etc.
    5. Research helps.  A good graphic designer will research who the client is without their logo.  Note:  Creating a logo is different from creating a brand.

There are advantages to going with an individual designer like Margo vs. online companies.  For example, Margo is available for personal and thoughtful conversations about what will work and what will not work.  Personal relationships are important!

Margo likes functional design: artwork that says more and there’s a story behind it. Margo likes doing research for her designs.  She also likes doing illustrations, which she considers REAL art.

Some of the things Margo likes best about her job is being available for her family, doing work she loves, and having some location independence.  Having a flexible schedule has allowed her to do more activism.  She likes having a flexible schedule.  In July, when everyone is on vacation, and business is slow, she has the opportunity to fill the time with learning.

Even though Margo is busy, she is an excellent communicator and meets my deadlines. I have had great experiences with her and would recommend her.  Margo likes to keep in touch with clients.  She feels like she’s part of their story.  I know she’s part of MY story!

Thank you for listening to episode 113 of The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast.

Niall Moroney & Elaine Kusmishko - Art Directors

Niall Moroney & Elaine Kusmishko - Art Directors

EPISODE 130 - NIALL MORONEY & ELAINE KUSMISHKO - Art Directors

Team Deakins talks to Art Directors, Niall Moroney and Elaine Kusmishko (1917, MARY POPPINS RETURNS, BEAUTY & THE BEAST). We start with what an art director does and the difference between a supervising art director and an art director and learn how the art department interacts with all departments on a film. We also break down the challenges of the film 1917 and how they met them. They share how much they had to learn about trenches, how they created them, and reconstruct the original land when the film ended. We also talk about using models on 1917 and why they were so helpful. They also share the way the night town set was envisioned and built. It’s a wonderful examination of the role of the art department in filmmaking as they give specific examples of the issues they face and then solve.

    2. Building your network with Nidia Dias, freelance Art Director

    2. Building your network with Nidia Dias, freelance Art Director

Nidia Dias is a freelance Designer and Art Director whose work focuses on styleframes and look development for motion design. Her signature style has seen her work with top London studios where she has produced work for Apple, Nike and Adobe - she also created the amazing motion piece for this podcast!

Having studied in Portugal and Sweden Nidia began her career interning with Mainframe in London, which led on to a full-time job where she made some brilliant contacts and friends whose recommendations over the years aided her progress to become an Art Director and to later taking the plunge into freelance work.

Freelancing can be daunting so in this episode, Nidia shares her experience and advice for taking on projects and working in new studios, especially if you’re naturally more introverted.

We also chat about how her network has helped her build self-confidence, what it’s been like to become a Mum working remotely amidst the pandemic, and the career benefits she has found from working on personal projects.

You can see more of Nidia’s work at:

You can follow me and get updates on the podcast at:

My top takeaways from this episode were:

    • Spark up conversations with studios or people whose work you like to make connections - even if there isn’t a job available.
    • Working on personal projects can help to develop your own style and showcase the work that you enjoy working on.
    • Be humble, reach out and ask for help.
