Lana Turner and Johnny Stompanado. The Gangster, the Daughter and the Knife.

April 4, 1958, Oscar nominated actress Lana Turner is fighting with her boyfriend—a man with known connections to the mob. In the house, listening to this escalating argument is Lana’s daughter. When the fight is over, the boyfriend is dead and a fourteen-year-old is named the killer. What happened that night in the pink bedroom of the Beverly Hills home is nothing short of a Hollywood screenplay, where only the three of them will ever know the truth, and movie star Lana Turner would need to take center stage in her most dramatic role ever—defending her daughter against a murder charge. This is Johnny Stompando. The Star. The Gangster and The Knife.

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 2
This week on Part Two of our birthday salute to Artie Shaw, we pick up with his band from the mid 1940's. On the tribute I tried to pick out many of his hits. These were also chosen for Artie himself for a 5 disc set called "Self Portrait". May 23rd, 1910 is the birthday of the late Artie Shaw and I wanted to present those great sides of his as we learn about his career. These are the original recordings by Artie and his band. I hope you enjoy the music by one of the jazz worlds greatest clarinetists and bandleaders. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 1

Artie Shaw - A Birthday Salute Part 1
When I was in the high school band, I played the clarinet. I first discovered the great music of Benny Goodman then a year or two later I discovered Artie Shaw. Artie's band was different than Benny's. I am not going to choose sides because I like them both. May 23rd, 1910 is the birthday of the late Artie Shaw and I wanted to present those great sides of his as we learn about his career. All the songs on both shows were picked out by Artie himself for a 5 disc set called Self-Portrait. These are the original recordings by Artie and his band. I hope you enjoy the music. Gene and Roy Part 2

    Gene and Roy Part 2
On the show today we continue with our birthday salutes this time it is to trumpeter Roy Eldridge. Roy was born on January 30th, 1911. Last time I featured music from Gene Krupa and since Roy was a member of Gene's band I've left those recordings for today's show. I also have some recordings when Roy was a member of Artie Shaw's band and to conclude the show a few songs released under his own name. I hope you enjoy these great recordings from one of jazz's trumpet masters, Roy Eldridge. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

    Artie Shaw Revisited Part 1

    Artie Shaw Revisited Part 1
Welcome to an encore presentation of a show I did in the Summer of 2015 on Artie Shaw. Here are the notes from that show: Artie Shaw has always been one of my favorite clarinetists. Since it has been a while since I did a program on Artie, I thought now is a good time. I have picked out many of Artie's hit records. In addition I'll be playing a few interview excerpts from the series "The Mystery of Artie Shaw" which ran on radio in the early 2000's. This series was produced by Ted Hallock who interviewed Artie in 1998. Artie is as feisty as ever even telling Ted at one point that one of the questions he asked was dumb. I hope you hear some of your favorite Artie Shaw recordings and enjoy the interview excerpts. The Big Band puzzler is gone this week to make time for the interview segments. Claude Thornhill - A Birthday Salute

Claude Thornhill - A Birthday Salute
August 10th is the birthday of one of the most creative bandleaders in big band history, the late Claude Thornhill. He was an American pianist, arranger, composer, and bandleader. He composed the jazz and pop standards "Snowfall" and "I Wish I Had You", the latter recorded by Billie Holiday. I had never heard of Claude when a fellow Big Band lover asked me if I had ever listened to his music. I obtained a couple of his lp's (lp stood for long playing back then) and really enjoyed what I heard. Claude had an orchestra that was the forerunner of the classic Miles Davis "Birth of the Cool". To celebrate his birthday we'll revisit some of that great music. I hope you enjoy the music from one of the most original big bands of all time. Big Band Remotes from WW2 Part 2

Big Band Remotes from WW2 Part 2
This week I am continuing with part two of Big Band Remotes from World War 2 with two remotes from the Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands series. At the same time, however, I am having a birthday salute to a favorite bandleader of mine, the late Artie Shaw. Artie was born on May 23, 1910 and he also appeared on the Spotlight band program for five consecutive weeks in 1945. So to honor Artie I would like to play the first two programs in that series. The sound quality is very good and there are some exciting solos from trumpeter Roy Eldridge. I hope you enjoy this look back at some on location performances from the great Artie Shaw as we remember his birthday. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbash.libsyn.com
