Mark Wells, pianist and vocalist for Peter Lamb & the Wolves: “There’s that thing in me as a vocalist that is a primal drive to wail”

Mark Wells is a pianist and vocalist for Peter Lamb & the Wolves, among other bands in the Triangle. You can find the Wolves next on Sunday, March 5, at SideBar in downtown Cary from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Mark shares about the Benny Goodman Small Groups, the King of Swing’s original trio and quartet from the early 1940s. The pianist played a tribute performance at the Sharp Nine Gallery on February 4 led by clarinetist Keenan McKenzie, along with vibraphonist Brandon Mitchell, guitarist Chip Newton, bassist Butler Knowles, and drummer Daniel Faust.

The musician also talks about the start of his career as a student at UNC–Chapel Hill, getting into the Lindy Hop scene through gigs along the east coast, and co-founding Peter Lamb & the Wolves. In addition to jazz, Mark is a principal class pianist for the Carolina Ballet.

You can often find Mark at the Pimiento Tea Room in Holly Springs for the restaurant’s live jazz series on Saturday evenings, with the Jim Ketch Swingtet, and with the Asheville-based band Queen Bee and the Honeylovers.

You can follow Mark on Instagram @mark.wells.music and Peter Lamb & the Wolves on Instagram @peterlambandthewolves or on Spotify

Mark graduated in 1998 from Carolina with a degree in psychology.

Benny Goodman - Two December Remotes

Benny Goodman - Two December Remotes
This week I've gone into my collection to pull out two radio remotes from Benny Goodman and his Orchestra. The first was recorded at the Congress Hotel in Chicago December 23, 1935 and the second was recorded December 22, 1937 at the Madhattan Room of the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. We'll get to hear some vocals by Helen Ward plus lots of Goodman clarinet. I don't do much talking which might be a good thing but the announcer does a nice job of calling the tunes. I hope you enjoy this trip back in time to the 1930's and this great set by Benny Goodman. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

    The Arrangers - Part 2

    The Arrangers - Part 2
This week we continue our look at the arrangers. The arranger has a vast store of musical knowledge and uses it to take 15 to 20 musicians and create a musical masterpiece. They decide who plays when, what section is playing, who takes a solo and much more. Benny Goodman had a lot of the great arrangers working for him in the 1930's so I thought it would be interesting to focus on his band's hits and see who they were arranged by. We'll be hearing arrangements by Mel Powell, Eddie Sauter, Fletcher Henderson and more. I hope you will tune in. Please visit this podcast at http://www.fgmiller.com/bbb/

Big Band Remotes from WW2 Part 1

Big Band Remotes from WW2 Part 1
On this week's show I would like to honor a request. A listener asked for some big band remotes that took place during World War 2. Most of the remotes I have during that era are from the Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands program. I found four 15 miniute shows so on the program today we will be listening to the bands of Tommy Dorsey, Bob Chester, Benny Goodman, and Les Brown. Three of the shows are from 1943 and one is from 1944. I hope you enjoy this look back at some on location performances from four of America's top bands.
