Folge 1269: DUNE: PART TWO – Der Hamlet der Wüste

    Dune Part Two review

    Dune Part Two review

The Dune books by Frank Herbert are widely said to be impossible to make into movies or shows. However, a few have tried and the latest is director Denis Villeneuve with, first, his Dune Part One film in 2021 and now Dune Part Two. Overwhelmingly, the consensus is that Villeneuve succeeded beautifully with his first Dune film in introducing movie audiences to the world of Dune. Now we get his Part Two which continues the story of Paul Atreides, who is royalty, but also could be the most powerful being in the entire universe someday. What will he do with this power? Will he engage in good to help out the people of the universe or will his power end up killing billions of people? Dune is also about Paul’s alliance with the people of the planet Arrakis, known as the Fremen. We also see his battle against his enemies, the Harkonnens and the Emperor. Is Dune Part Two entertaining as it tells this complex, twisted tale? Check out this show to find out. Dune Part Two stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling.

Ross and Carrie read the 1987 UFO memoir Communion, by alleged abductee Whitley Strieber. What happened on the night of October 10, 1985? What could possibly explain the blue light that fills the family cabin in the middle of the night? Why did Whitley wake up suddenly, filled with dread? Why did his personality change from this moment on? And why didn’t he connect any of this to aliens until three months later? Our intrepid author will answer you in only 299 pages. PLUS, something surprising: Carrie and Ross don’t agree on a movie.

172: If you wanna smoke, you can smoke in the trunk. | Excess Baggage (1997)

What a way to welcome the New Year. Excess Baggage is a film from 1997 that almost takes you there but then falls short overall. The casting honestly saved this whole project but it really puts into perspective the importance of a tight story and seamless collaboration.

This film was riddled with re-writes and re-shoots which is typically not a good sign, however watching for the charm and nostalgia factor really made up for it. Me and Mikey spent this episode pointing out the story holes, the drama on set during filming, and I drool over Benicia Del Toro.

    Wedding Crashers (2005)

    Wedding Crashers (2005)

Released in 2005, "Wedding Crashers" is a comedy film that captured the hearts of audiences worldwide with its raucous humour and endearing characters. Directed by David Dobkin and featuring an all-star cast led by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, this movie presents a fresh take on the concept of wedding crashing, blending romance, laughter, and even a touch of sentimentality. With its witty dialogue, energetic performances, and unexpected twists, "Wedding Crashers" remains a beloved classic in the realm of romantic comedies.

The film revolves around John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vince Vaughn), two divorce mediators who find joy in gatecrashing weddings to pick up women. They adhere to a set of rules they have created for themselves to successfully infiltrate nuptial ceremonies without detection. However, their escapades take an unexpected turn when they crash the high-profile wedding of Treasury Secretary William Cleary's (Christopher Walken) daughter, Claire (Rachel McAdams).

As John falls for Claire, and Jeremy becomes entangled with Gloria Cleary (Isla Fisher), the Secretary's other daughter, the duo must navigate a web of lies, misunderstandings, and family dynamics. The story unfolds with a series of hilarious mishaps, awkward encounters, and outrageous situations that keep viewers laughing throughout.

The performances in "Wedding Crashers" are a true highlight of the film. Owen Wilson brings his trademark charm and affability to the role of John, while Vince Vaughn delivers his fast-talking and sarcastic humor as Jeremy. Their on-screen chemistry is electric, and their comedic timing is impeccable. Christopher Walken's portrayal of Secretary Cleary is a masterclass in deadpan humour, and Rachel McAdams and Isla Fisher shine as the love interests caught up in the chaos.

The film's screenplay, written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, strikes a perfect balance between slapstick comedy and clever dialogue. The humor ranges from outrageous physical gags to witty one-liners, ensuring that there is something for everyone. The banter between John and Jeremy is a constant source of amusement, filled with zingers and hilarious exchanges that keep the audience engaged.

One of the film's strengths is its ability to poke fun at the conventions of romantic comedies while simultaneously embracing them. It takes familiar tropes and twists them, resulting in unexpected and uproarious outcomes. The dialogue is sharp and filled with memorable lines that have since become iconic in comedy circles.

David Dobkin's direction brings a lively and energetic vibe to the film, ensuring that the pace never lags. The wedding scenes are beautifully shot, capturing the grandeur and emotion of the events. The camera work effectively highlights the comedic moments, allowing the audience to fully appreciate the physical humor and facial expressions of the talented cast.

The soundtrack of "Wedding Crashers" perfectly complements the tone of the film. It features a blend of catchy and nostalgic tunes, including classic hits like "Shout" by The Isley Brothers and "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger. The music enhances the comedic and romantic moments, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience.

While primarily a comedy, "Wedding Crashers" touches on themes of love, friendship, and personal growth. The characters go through personal transformations and learn valuable lessons about relationships and commitment. Underneath the humor and escapades, the film explores the importance of honesty and staying true to oneself.

"Wedding Crashers" is a delightful romantic comedy that stands the test of time. Its clever writing, stellar performances, and laugh-out-loud moments make it a true gem in the genre. The film's ability to blend comedy and romance, along with its memorable characters and quotable dialogue, has solidified its place as a classic in the hearts of audiences. If you're in the mood for a feel-good movie that will leave you in stitches, "Wedding Crashers" is the perfect choice. So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the hilarious ride.
