    History of Israel: The Beginning...Abraham

    History of Israel: The Beginning...Abraham

The Bible tells amazing personal stories, but what about the bigger picture? What was Israel's place in the world during Bible times? This episode is the first in the series looking at the history of Israel and it's place in the ancient world. This will give us context to when these events took place.

The first episode is all about Abraham with a little about Isaac and Ishmael. There's also some discussion about the formation of kingdoms and how it differed in the land of Canaan. While these are personal stories, they set the stage for what is to come in later episodes.

Anger For God’s Compassion - Jonah 4 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

Anger For God’s Compassion - Jonah 4 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

Coming to the end of Jonah, we look for a tidy wrap-up and conclusion to a short book that has many twists and turns.  But perhaps the question we want answered most, "What happens to Jonah?" is left unresolved.  We see through this chapter that Jonah still has a deep sense of pride and contempt in regards to the Ninevites.  We see that God provides something for Jonah (a plant), only to take it away.  At this, he is angry and upset with God.  Overall, we see that God has a heart for the lost and pokes at Jonah's "rights" to be upset with how He [God] acts.  Do we have any blindspots within our faith that keeps us from reaching out, just like Jonah?  This episode concludes our series but there is still much we can ponder and pray through as we ask the Lord to help us not run from, but fulfill our call in Christ.

Calling Out Wicked Nineveh - Jonah 3 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

Calling Out Wicked Nineveh - Jonah 3 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

By Jonah 3, we see the prophet hearing the call of God, reinstated, and ready to go to Nineveh.  We know Jonah went into the city and preached repentance.  We know also that everyone in the city, from the king down to the citizenry, repented and fasted.  By the end of the chapter, we see that God relents from His decision to destroy Nineveh.  From this chapter alone, we learn much about how God feels towards the lost.  As believers in Christ do we have this same care and compassion over those who do not know Him?  Join me once again as we dive in and look at this amazing story!

A Prayer In A Most Unlikely Place - Jonah 2 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

A Prayer In A Most Unlikely Place - Jonah 2 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

In this second installment of Jonah, we see Jonah praying a prayer in an unlikely place:  within the belly of a fish.  We know from the first chapter, Jonah's disobedience landed him here.  But even as this place has brought him to his knees, Jonah's plea is not rejected before God.  Through the 10 verses of Jonah 2, there is a Psalm-like longing and hope within Jonah.  By the end, we see he has a heart of repentance and a desire to once again be reinstated for God's call.  It's a call we experience too as we fully submit and surrender to God's will.

Man On The Run - Jonah 1 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

Man On The Run - Jonah 1 (THE BOOK OF JONAH)

This is the first episode of a 4-part series on Jonah.  This series looks at the life and ministry of Jonah in regards to his reluctant obedience as a prophet of God.  In this first episode (corresponding with Jonah Chapter 1), we see Jonah's flee from God's call.  We see his disobedience causing consequences for Jonah and even the men on the ship (innocent bystanders to what Jonah has done).  We also see God's care and compassion for the lost.  This first episode is the springboard for where the rest of the book will take us.  Encourage you to listen in and please share with someone who you think will be impacted by this message.

Absalom comes for the Throne - The Book of 2 Samuel

David and Bathsheba - The Book of 2 Samuel

David and Bathsheba - The Book of 2 Samuel

In this Bible Story, David remains home from battle to rest. While his men fight on the front lines of the Ammonites, he eventually grows complacent, and sleeps with the wife of one of his mighty men, Uriah. She becomes pregnant, and David sends Uriah to the front lines to be killed to cover up his sins. This story is inspired by 2 Samuel 11. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 2 Samuel 11:2 from the King James Version.

Episode 102: It was spring, the time when most kings go to war, but David feeling content and desiring some rest sent Joab in his stead. However, this choice would prove fatal. In his ease, David looked out and saw something he should not have, and gave into desire for another man’s wife. This sin would not only taint his kingdom, it would also lead to the death of one of his closest friends as well as their child as a result.

Psalm 104: A Hint of the Promised Land

    Psalm 104:

Andrew and Edwin discover how Psalm 104 fits within the context of a bunch of Psalms praising God for His deliverance of Israel from captivity and restoring the Promised Land. It may be just a hint, but the Promised Land is in this psalm.

Day 227: The Towering Cedar (2023)

Day 227: The Towering Cedar (2023)
Fr. Mike highlights the people of Israel's flaw in trusting in the strength and power of Egypt, not realizing that although Egypt is like a towering cedar tree, the nation will eventually collapse. Fr. Mike also points out Jeremiah's vehement message to Israel to brace themselves for God's judgment. Today we read Jeremiah 4, Ezekiel 31-32, and Proverbs 14:17-20. Day 200: Egypt, Assyria, and Israel (2023)

Day 200: Egypt, Assyria, and Israel (2023)
Fr. Mike celebrates Day 200 of our journey by highlighting the relationship between Egypt, Assyria, and Israel according to the Lord's plan. We have a God who died for his enemies to make him his friends, and we see that foreshadowed in Isaiah, concerning the horrific acts of Assyria and Egypt. Today's readings are Isaiah 18-20, Nahum 1-2, and Proverbs 10:25-28. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Day 197: Woe and Consolation (2023)
Fr. Mike reveals yet another prophetic message that points towards the coming of Christ, explaining why the Book of Isaiah is often called the Book of Woe and the Book of Consolation. He also touches on the powerful prayer we hear as we end our journey with Tobit. Today's readings are Isaiah 11-13, Tobit 13-14, and Proverbs 10:13-16. Day 184: Hezekiah Reigns (2023)
Fr. Mike reflects on Hezekiah's righteousness as king of Judah, and his pivotal work of restoring true worship and removing false idols. By undoing all of the corrupt things his father king Ahaz did, Hezekiah shows us that our ancestors do not define our destiny. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Introduction to the Exile (with Jeff Cavins) - 2023

Introduction to the Exile (with Jeff Cavins) - 2023
Welcome to the Exile period! Jeff Cavins joins Fr. Mike to introduce the eighth biblical period, which covers the fall of the Southern Kingdom, Judah, and its exile into Babylon. They explain how the physical exile of Judah was representative of their spiritual realities, and ultimately oriented towards the healing and restoration of their unfaithfulness. We also learn about the role of prophets in this period. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Got's Path is Forward, Never Backward - Audio

Got's Path is Forward, Never Backward - Audio
"You can't go forward by going backward." This just makes sense, doesn't it? In this message, Pastor Derek Holmes looks at how Israel chose to go backward and make a defense alliance with Egypt, their former oppressor, hoping they would be a better option for protection than God Himself. How many times are we tempted to run backward to the sin that oppresses us instead of waiting on the Lord?

An Evil King is Restored - The Book of 2 Kings

An Evil King is Restored - The Book of 2 Kings

In this Bible Story, we learn of the wicked kings Manasseh and Amon. They openly sacrifice their own children at the altar of false gods, and mock God himself. This story is inspired by 2 Chronicles 33 & 2 Kings 21. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 2 Kings 21:20 from the King James Version.

Episode 152: As Ammon lay assassinated, he left behind his eight-year-old boy Josiah to be king in his place. Josiah clung to God and pleased Him in all he did. Even when he grew older, he did not abandon the God of Israel. Instead, as he grew, he got rid of the idols of the land. After the land was cleared, he turned his attention toward restoring the temple. It was in this act that he would discover The Book of The Law of God and turn the people of Judah toward their God in repentance.

    Episode 114: Nahum 1-3

    Episode 114: Nahum 1-3

Short but not sweet. Nahum is a book that doesn't get much air time in pulpits for some pretty glaring reasons. As a condemnation on Assyria it contains some violent and offensive language and, if taken at face value, some violent and offensive theology. But read as resistance poetry given to those under oppression it offers hope for a better tomorrow.

A Gentle Yet Terrifying Slaughter - The Book of 2 Chronicles

A Gentle Yet Terrifying Slaughter - The Book of 2 Chronicles

In this Bible Story, we learn about the battle between God and the Assyrian King Sennacherib, and the Lord provides victory over the Assyrians. This story is inspired by 2 Chronicles 32:1-23 & 2 Kings 18:13-19:37. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 2 Chronicles 32:20-21 from the King James Version.

Episode 150: As the King lay sick on his bed, he begs God to remember him. Asking that God would recall all the good he did in His name. This call was not made in vain. God heard him and sent a word through the prophet Isaiah that he would be spared and live another fifteen years. The nations heard about this miraculous healing and even Babylon came to congratulate the King. But instead of using this visit to point the nations to his God, he used it to show off his wealth. This sin would cost him his nation.

Israel’s Sin and Punishment - The Book of 2 Kings

Israel’s Sin and Punishment - The Book of 2 Kings

In this Bible Story, we learn about the tragic downfall of Israel. Fully immersed in evil, they find themselves captive to the dark nations they swore allegiance to. Captives, stolen away from their country, they still fail to cry out to God for help. This story is inspired by 2 Kings 17. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is 2 Kings 17:39 from the King James Version.

Episode 148: King Hezekiah bore the burden of having Ahaz as his father, but he was nothing like him. Hezekiah held fast to God and encouraged the people to do the same. He led the people in restoring the temple of God. He restored the priests to the temple. And he led the people in true repentance and trust in God.

Psalm 80: "How Long Will You be Angry with Your People's Prayers?"

Psalm 80: "How Long Will You be Angry with Your People's Prayers?"

    Psalm 80 (NKJV)

Andrew and Edwin make an argument for dating this psalm in the sliver of time between Assyria capturing Israel and Judah being delivered from Assyria. In that time, while Assyria was defeating Judean cities, the psalmist asks, "How long will you be angry with our prayers?"
