Helping Students Thrive from “This Side” of the Desk

Helping Students Thrive from “This Side” of the Desk

S1E3 The College Counseling team at The Lovett School is often called upon to discuss the latest in applying to college, especially as the admission process seems to grow evermore mysterious and mercurial. Anita Hua, Director of College Counseling joins Living Lovett host Jessica Sant to talk about the challenges (and joys!) of engaging the journey to college, keeping in mind the unique needs of students and families.

With an eight-year history working together, Ms. Hua and Ms. Sant have a lot to talk about. All Lovett college counselors have experience “on the other side of the desk,” that is, they all have worked in college admission. How does that experience translate into advising and guiding Lovett students?

Why is the unofficial motto of the College Counseling Office, “It Depends”? How can students and families keep some perspective during the application process? What constitutes a “tough” conversation? Do the college counselors ever tell a student where they should (or shouldn’t) apply? These questions and more are answered on this episode.
