Competition, Challenge, Victory, and Resiliency: Educational Based Sports at Lovett

S3E4  Adam Nelson has quite the list of bona fides: he’s a Lovett grad; he was a Lovett athlete; he was a professional athlete; and he’s an Olympic gold medalist. Add to that: he’s now a Lovett dad and Lovett’s Athletic Director.

Athletics has a lot to do with the whole child promise, and educational based sports offer different opportunities than club sports. Mr. Nelson and Living Lovett host Jessica Sant (Chief Engagement Officer at The Lovett School) discuss how sports positively impact resiliency and help students learn more about themselves as they do their best on the court, track, or field.

Love is a Part of Our Culture

Love is a Part of Our Culture

S3E3 Culture is sometimes hard to define: it’s all around us yet, if we aren’t careful, it’s easy to take the culture of a place for granted. When we’re mindful of culture, it has the potential to connect us to the best of what Lovett strives to be.

Dr. Tommy Welch, Lovett’s Chief of Culture and Community joins Chief Engagement Officer, Jessica Sant on Living Lovett. Listen in as Dr. Welch shares his insights on building inclusive school cultures, the challenges and opportunities of diversity, and how we can support students from all backgrounds.

See You at the Lovett Cafe

See You at the Lovett Cafe

S3E2 If you are searching for a spot on campus that reflects the best of our community, you need not look any further than the Lovett Cafe. Before you even cross through its doorway, you’ll be certain something good is (literally and figuratively) cooking inside.

Living Lovett host Jessica Sant is the Chief Engagement Officer at The Lovett School and number one Cafe super-fan. On today’s episode, you’ll meet Cat Chartier, The Lovett Cafe’s head chef, and also Michael Brown and Chris Lewis, two of our cafe associates.

Lovett values extend beyond our classrooms. While the Cafe is obviously a place for a great meal, a strong cup of coffee, or a sweet treat, it’s also a central hub for community cultivation – where learning is frequent, kindness is modeled, and genuine fun is had by all.

    Parent Volunteers Help Lovett Thrive

The student experience takes center stage at an independent school like Lovett, but that’s not the only element that makes the Lovett a thriving community. Our school needs the involvement of parents and families that dedicate their time and talents to helping the activities and events of Lovett come to life. Parent volunteers help Lovett thrive.

Meet Mia Rogers and Ashante Gilstrap (Co-Presidents of Lovett International Alliance); Elizabeth Caldwell and Jordan Holden (Co-Presidents of the Lovett Parent Association.) These four enthusiastic parent volunteers speak with host Jessica Sant about the impact volunteering has on Lovett as well as the enrichment it offers the volunteers.

If you are interested in getting involved as a parent volunteer, on this episode you’ll learn the easiest and most direct ways to get started. You’ll also hear first-hand testimony about the benefits each of the volunteers receive—in addition to seeing excellent programs and events coming together. You’ll even hear some transparent reports about volunteers who are totally new to independent schools—if you are wondering things like: will my family fit in? The Pride of Lovett

    The Pride of Lovett
S1E4  Springtime on a high school campus is often filled with excitement and optimism, but there is much to do before the summer officially arrives, particularly for seniors. At The Lovett School, celebrations can’t begin for some until senior projects and diploma distinctions are officially submitted. Two Lovett seniors, Caki Staton and Margaret Hare, join Living Lovett host, Jessica Sant, to discuss why they pursued a diploma distinction and what’s more, why they focused their efforts on building a “one Lovett” community. Listeners will also hear from six other 12th graders who will introduce what they’ve been working on - their topics are wide-ranging but equally inspiring.

What is the objective of diploma distinctions at Lovett? Who advises students across their five-semesters of work? What’s the impact of experiential learning on students as they pursue these projects? These questions and more are answered on this episode.

Helping Students Thrive from “This Side” of the Desk

Helping Students Thrive from “This Side” of the Desk

S1E3 The College Counseling team at The Lovett School is often called upon to discuss the latest in applying to college, especially as the admission process seems to grow evermore mysterious and mercurial. Anita Hua, Director of College Counseling joins Living Lovett host Jessica Sant to talk about the challenges (and joys!) of engaging the journey to college, keeping in mind the unique needs of students and families.

With an eight-year history working together, Ms. Hua and Ms. Sant have a lot to talk about. All Lovett college counselors have experience “on the other side of the desk,” that is, they all have worked in college admission. How does that experience translate into advising and guiding Lovett students?

Why is the unofficial motto of the College Counseling Office, “It Depends”? How can students and families keep some perspective during the application process? What constitutes a “tough” conversation? Do the college counselors ever tell a student where they should (or shouldn’t) apply? These questions and more are answered on this episode.

#77 Discovery of Less - Chris Lovett

Less is more, or so the saying goes, but how many of us are brave enough to let go of the things that clutter our life?  The objects we own, just in case we need them?  The DVD collection from 10 years ago, not a single one played for 10 years either? The books we have never read? My guest Chris Lovett After a lifetime of drifting in the comfort zone, decided to pack it all in. Literally.

In this Podcast is his story - following an intense personal revelation while stuck in traffic, Chris unsubscribed from his own safe way of living and opted instead to maximise his world by letting go of everything he ever owned. How? He became a minimalist.

034: Making Money in Mograph Part 4 w/ Matthew Encina

034: Making Money in Mograph Part 4 w/ Matthew Encina

For part four of the mini-series, Making Money in Mograph, we’re going to talk about how you can earn an income in a few non-conventional ways as a motion designer, using content creation. As a content creator, you can put your skills to use to attract clients and even earn passive income.

Matthew Encina is the chief content officer at The Futur and creative director for Blind. He started off his creative career fifteen years ago as a print designer before transitioning into motion design. Since then he’s been heading up some amazing projects helping clients with their branding strategy through motion design and creating courses and content to help other people in the industry grow their profession.

In this interview, we discuss how we as motion designers can make content for our businesses and how that can help us stand out as an expert in this industry. Maybe it will even help you generate passive income one day. The key is identifying what makes you unique and relevant to a specific audience, then sharing what you can do in a way that appeals to them.

We also talk about building an audience through Instagram and how you can get started right away with Instagram Stories. Furthermore, we chat a bit about how and why to offer a presale and the importance of having a diversified income.

    In this episode:

    • What content marketing is and why we should care about it as motion designers
    • How teaching what you do will help you become a master of your craft
    • Identifying what makes you unique so that you can find the audience that’s perfect for you
    • Using Instagram Stories to connect with an audience and show them the face behind your work
    • How content creation can turn into passive income for freelance motion designers
    • The advantages of offering a presale of a product in order to test out your ideas and make money right away
    • A diversified income as an essential part of having financial security as a freelancer

    Quotes:

“The reason why I feel that content is important is to establish yourself as an expert in the industry.” [7:05]

“So I don’t think that you should try to filter out ahead of time who the audience is and what exactly they want. What I would do is just focus on yourself - what makes you unique? What are things that you spent time and money to learn? Look at those things. Can you teach that to somebody else? Part of that teaching process is where you master your craft.” [13:26]

“It’s really important to embrace who you are, not trying to become vanilla and trying to find something new to say, because everything has already been said. Just share it the way that you  want to say it or that you see it because your POV is the thing that’s really important.” [19:52]

“There’s so many cool people out there. I think if people were just more vulnerable and open about who they are, they might develop a stronger connection to the community around them and the people who resonate with them.” [25:58]

“I think it’s very important to diversify where you might be getting income from. So some of it could be passive; some of it could be opportunity based; some of it could be consulting.” [34:50]
