Say It Skillfully® – Jumpstart Your Career, Reset Relationships…
Say It Skillfully® is a show that helps you to benefit from Molly Tschang’s expert guidance on the best possible ways to speak your mind at work in a positive and productive manner. Episode 205 features successful professionals and what’s top of mind for them. Molly’s first caller, Kris, is facing a situation that’s challenging emotionally and a significant new responsibility as he steps in to handle his grandmother’s finances. The bureaucracy, change of financial advisors, lack of responsiveness, and errors are extremely frustrating, yet he’s got to make it work. He and Molly talk about ways to reset his own mindset, so that Kris can create a productive relationship with the new advisor. Hear him reflect on his tendencies and embrace taking a step back to create space to move forward in a better way. Next Onwar, who is early in career, opens up about a defining career moment! He is in an apprentice program and being considered for a permanent position (which would be a gamechanger in his ability to support his family). He shares his non-traditional path into software engineering, as the college route proved not to be a fit for him, and learnings in navigating the corporate workplace. He and Molly talk about his strategy to understand the evaluation process and how best to position himself. And don’t miss Onwar’s openness to new ideas for how to reach out to his boss’ boss (16:15). Then Hugi is keen to reach out for paid board and consulting assignments and utilize his risk, automation and multicultural expertise. Molly suggests informational interviewing as a way to get to know organizations and building relationships to have an internal sponsor. With Latino heritage Hugi also asks about diversity as a dimension he brings. Molly offers thoughts for him in considering how an organization values diversity in the broadest sense and to be specific about the ways he can be value add (37:10). Tune in and learn how to navigate work and life while being invaluable and true to yourself! Molly’s thought for the week: “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” And—she invites you to check out her 1st LinkedIn Learning course, “Leadership Communication in the Flow of Work.” In this post, click on the LinkedIn Learning logo under the video (on the left) to access free for 24 hours. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/mollytschang_sayitskillfully-communicationskills-passion-activity-7099873982077657088-L-qC?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

    On being neurodivergent and queer

    On being neurodivergent and queer

    Happy Pride Month!

In this episode, I reflect on my experiences of being "different" growing up as queer and neurodivergent (ADHD-PI), including how that difference affected me even after coming out. I conclude the episode with how I have used that difference to foster a new sense of community.

I didn't have an outline for this episode, so I know my thoughts wander quite a bit with this one. I appreciate each and every one of my listeners!

Their Stories Became His Story: Living Undeterred with Jeffrey Johnston

Their Stories Became His Story: Living Undeterred with Jeffrey Johnston

The Holidays are among us. The show wishes everyone warm and enjoyable season. Remember, take a deep breath when things are overwhelming. You will make it through!

“Purpose becomes Passion when it gets Personal”

On 10/4/16 and again on 6/29/21, this became very personal for him. In a span of 5 years, he went from standing on top of the mountain to lying on his back at the bottom of the “abyss.” His oldest son, Seth died from fentanyl poisoning at the age of 23 and was soon followed by his wife of 21 years, Prudence succumbing to alcoholism at the age of 46. 2 deaths. So preventable yet predictable at the same time.

Battling his own alcoholism and compulsive gambling, he decided to take a stand. He dove headfirst into mental health advocacy and have found ways to be at the best place emotionally, physically and spiritually he has ever been in his life.

He launched The Undeterred Podcast, founded the non-profit Living Undeterred Project (formally The Choices Network, Ltd) to promote and encourage healthy lifestyle choices for teens and young adults, and even released a book, "This One's For You-An Inspirational Journey Through Addiction, Death and Meaning" found online at www.livingundeterred.com.

    Other areas of discussion include:

    • Overcoming a brush with suicide during last holiday season
    • How challenges become superpowers
    • Adderall and attention deficit
    • How he reached 5 years without alcohol
    • How to grieve is up to you. He shares how not to grieve.
    • What is Stoicism?

Everyone tuning in, stick around for the spotlight story at the halfway point. We are very fortunate to have Jeffrey here with the courage to share his story as we can help those listening on struggling. Today, I will introduce an article from Mental Health America discussing bereavement and grief and discuss it with Jeff. Follow along here
