Being Bored is A Gift: Here’s How to Use It

Have you ever had those moments of inescapable boredom? It persists like an itch you can’t scratch. Often in those moments, we desperately try to find something to satisfy or entertain ourselves. But maybe we should stop doing that.

Barry and Stephanie discuss their own experiences with boredom. For a while, Barry had the itch come up in his meditation practice. Stephanie recalls moments of boredom in childhood and times she grappled with her attention span.

Together they provide insight into why boredom can come up in meditation, how to move through it and the perception you can find beneath. And that perception is a gift for you to use.

Episode 135 Q&A: How To Get Hyperactive Kids To Focus Better

Episode 135 Q&A: How To Get Hyperactive Kids To Focus Better

This weeks question is from Heather,

“Hi Dr. Nicole, my four-and-a-half-year-old son is a good kid, but we can’t get him to focus on learning. All he wants to do is run and play. When they have circle time at school, he’ll only sit for four minutes, then he’s up and looking for something else. I am trying so hard to teach him his ABC’s, and he just says “Nope, let’s play.” or “Not now, mom”, but yet if I give him my cell phone, he can be on it for an hour watching shows without a problem. I just don't know what else to try. He’s also lacking in some speech development by about a year, and I have an appointment to get a referral for speech therapy. Not sure if I should ask about ADD or other issues.”

In this episode I will address the question - what is a normal attention span for a young child and why does screen time seem to hold their attention when nothing else will. I will also share effective strategies to improve focus and learning in children that never seem to want to sit still.

    #43 - Porn as Education | Mythbusters

    Ready for myth-busting part 2?

In this episode, Sammy and Andrew continue treading through prevailing myths about porn and sex that are relentlessly hurting and damaging people, especially younger generations. They focused on using porn as a platform for education about sex.

Absorbing all of these false ideas causes viewers to inherit more negative concepts than learnings, and these will only weigh a person down.

Remember, relationships and sex are meant to be unique. It's something that you are committed to create and nourish on your own. Be educated wisely by learning how to take care of your relationship first, then real intimate connection through sex will follow.

    • We are not just about our physical bodies but multi-dimensional being (2:04)
    • Wrong assumptions on making porn a safe space for learning (6:13)
    • What porn is precisely teaching us (8:03)
    • Why porn is created (10:53)
    • Porn is not tailor-made to the relationship you're in (12:57)
    • Ethical porn? (16:29)
    • Porn as distractions on a person’s sexual attention span (19:22)
    • Healthy ways to expand the mind in creating a great sexual relationship (25:52)

Digital Addiction: Lured and Hooked on Technology by Design with Nir Eyal and Jordan Reid

Taking time away from our digital devices is not easy. Each bell and ding of app notifications was designed to hook us and keep us engaged. Many people don’t realize that the more attention they pay to their devices the less time they are engaged in the present moment. But, putting our devices down, even for a minute can cause anxiety and depression. To find out how we can take back our time and focus our attention on the important parts of the human experience, Positive Psychology Podcast Host, Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors who share their work about digital detox. Nir Eyal details his four strategies for becoming indistractable from his book, Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life. And, returning guest Jordan Reid, shares excerpts from her family life that enticed her to write The Big Activity Book for Digital Detox.

The Weird Noise That Focuses Your Brain

The Weird Noise That Focuses Your Brain

According to a study by Microsoft, the average person's attention span is eight seconds long. That’s a sharp decrease from the 12 second average in 2000.

But I can’t say I’m surprised. There's so much that's vying for our attention...

And when your attention span suffers, so does your brain. In fact, it becomes MORE vulnerable to decline and disease.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to enhance learning & help your brain thrive.
