Several of his 11 books have landed on the NYT bestsellers list, including stellar tomes on the likes of Brett Favre, Walter Payton and the 1986 Mets. He has also written two bestselling books on the Lakers multiple dynasties, including Showtime, the story of the Magic, Kareem and Pat Riley Lakers teams of the 80s. That one has been turned into one of HBO's most popular series (under the name Winning Time because why would HBO have a high profile series with the name of its top competitor?). Jeff's appeared on this week's episode of the Open Mic: Writers in Their Own Words to talk about his latest book, The Last Folk Hero: The Life and Myth of Bo Jackson. I've read most of Jeff's books (sorry, no Barry or Roger for me) and I think this is undoubtedly his best one yet. So get ready to tap into the man, the myth, the legend: Jeff Pearlman. (Thought I was gonna say Bo, didn't you!) The new Open Mic is here!

This episode required a fight with Mother Nature on two fronts. First, during recording, Hurricane Ian unleased his fury on the Pettey household. Followed shortly by another appearance at our Charlotte studio that delayed production for a couple more days. But don't fret!

This week, several high-profile SEC games are on the slate, finally! The Kentucky Wildcats visit Pettey's Ole Miss Rebels for a top 25 matchup while the Alabama Crimson Tide take their 2nd ranked squad to Fayetteville where they'll try to roast some Arkansas Razorback pigs.

Mary Beth Smart is a former University of Georgia women's basketball team captain, a mother of three and wife to Kirby Smart, head coach of UGA's football team. Mary Beth and Kristi reminisce about their rivalries in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and Mary Beth shares  personal family stories that coincided with some of Alabama's and Georgia's most successful seasons. The two also discuss some of the joys and challenges of raising children around football teams.
