MN.25.06.1992. Strange Religion from Tokyo and AWR Europe
We had no idea that behind the station we reported on in this programme would later be responsible for a Sarin gas attack in Tokyo. But that was three years later. Spanish Foreign Radio is working on a relay station in Costa Rica. Radio Miami has done a deal with a station in Honduras. The Megaphone Newsreel marches across the continent. Radio Vilnius is worried about its relay in Moldova. Baltic Radio International is going to make money, so Paul Rusling claims. AWR Europe's World DX News signs off. Radio Norway plans special transmissions for Burma. Radio St Helena may return to the airwaves. Paul Ballster has found a new station in Wimbeldon. Radio Free Asia cancels a visit to Beijing.

    Beginnings episode 38: Jesse Moynihan

    Beginnings episode 38: Jesse Moynihan

Jesse Moynihan is a bit of a Renaissance man. He’s a storyboard artist/writer on the amazing Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. He’s also a comic artist who’s been making hilarious, weird and thoughtful comics for years, and his latest collection Forming vol. 1 was just published on Nobrow Press. Jesse’s also a musician and plays in the experimental pop group Make a Rising, who have two fantastic albums with a third on the way. Jesse sat down with us in the Wrestling Team apartment a few weeks ago while he was in town for an indie comics convention and: Jesse talked about chilling with The Dead Milkmen! He also told us about how his father's Christian visions and his mother's involvement in Aum Shinrikyo made him more receptive to the world. We even discussed David Lynch's contradictions! All this and mooooooooooore!

MN.25.06.1992 - Before they were Infamous Aum Shinrikyo

MN.25.06.1992 - Before they were Infamous Aum Shinrikyo
In the summer of 1992, if you tuned up and down a shortwave radio in many parts of the world you could hear what sounded like a Yoga meditation class on several dozen frequencies. At this time, the Russian authorities were hiring out shortwave airtime to anyone who wanted to pay for it. Radio Moscow World Service, the Russian external broadcaster had been downsized well before it became the Voice of Russia. As a result, many shortwave transmitters were lying idle. Aum Shinrikyo bought a major amount of airtime....42 simultaneous transmitters. The movement was founded by Shoko Asahara in his one-bedroom apartment in Shibuya, Tokyo as a meditation class known as Aum-no-kai ("Aum club") and began steadily growing in the years that followed. It gained the official status as a religious organization in 1989. Because it attracted such a considerable number of young graduates from Japan's elite universities that it was dubbed a "religion for the elite". The Wikipedia entry goes on to explain that at the end of 1989 there were rumours that some public figures who criticized the "religion of truth" were being eliminated. At the end of 1993, the cult started secretly manufacturing Sarin nerve gas nerve and VX (nerve agent) Aum tested their sarin on sheep in remote parts of Western Australia. Both sarin and VX were then used in several assassinations (and attempted assassinations) in the course of 1994. The most notable was on the night of 27 June 1994, when the cult carried out the world's first use of a chemical weapon in a terrorist attack against civilians when they released sarin in the central Japanese city of Matsumoto, Nagano. The gas killed eight and harmed 200 others. However, police investigations focused only on an innocent local resident and failed to implicate the cult at that point. Flashback to 1992, when enquiries that we did in Moscow revealed that the cult hadn't made much in the way of new programming. All these transmitters were being fed from a DAT recorder put into a continuous playback loop the central transmission control centre in Moscow. It played Side A for 57 minutes then switched over to side B. Little did we realise that these rather poor presented programmes were fueled by such cruel actions. Note that the group reformed in the early parts of this century and the chapter on this Japanese cult is far from closed, even though they are no longer in the headlines.

    My Friend Steven

    My Friend Steven
HELLO MY FELLOW FRIENDS & DEEPHOUSE LOVERS! Quite recently I got a letter from one very famous man with which I had to become acquainted on one of congresses on martial arts, which passed a few years back in Japan. On my enormous surprise, he did not not only renounce to have a talk with me but also told about many and many interesting things, touching both the applied aspects of martial arts and some spiritual practices which gave birth in the monasteries of India and Tibet. After it our roads divided, and a few years I for some reason not nearly reminisced it. However, as this man said me once, if you live and have spiritual hunger – that you live rightly – circumstances in my life were folded so, that I again reminisced him and simply wrote him a letter, not especially hoping on a reverse answer – even because after expiration of so protracted term of time he could it is simple to forget about me. A month passed however, two, and in one gloomy cold autumn morning I found out in the mailbox the whimsically decorated envelope with by a great number the semiworn out postal stamps – as appeared, on the way to me this letter rounded the half of earth almost. Below I will bring his fragment over: Hello Arthur! You are now in falling in to disappear, which does not have a bottom. The unique method not to lose itself and remain by itself in such situation is in a root to revise a look to surrounding reality and operate. To operate, even saving rest, even being in inaction. A way of strengthening of own body and rise of own spirit will be long, not simple and difficult. However as well as any Way Up, it can not be simple, easy and fast . Patience, faith and permanent practice, are basic instruments for your advancement on this stage. Now you have nowhere to hurry. Patience is needed in an order to continue practices and move upstairs constantly and purposefully. Your state of spirit in this not simple for you period must remind a little monastery, forgotten deeply in impassable mountains. Only complete distraction from temptations of outward things, and powerful internal concentration will help you not to lose this state and not hammered together from a correct way. Learn thinly to feel this state and always to be in him. State of dead certainty in itself and deep spiritual comfort. Faith your in your complete convalescence must be stronger than rocks which hundreds of years are ground smooth by beach-combers. Faith in itself must be yet stronger. It means that you must not lose feeling of internal force in circumstances which now seem to you insuperable foremost. Your primary purpose now is only one – to obtain an excellent physical health by all means. You must aim with might and main to it, not sparing itself not in the least degree, not indulging even to the least temptations. Results will be not immediately, but will be necessarily. Not despair. A way to real Force always lies through loneliness and darkness. Your personal internal force, faith and strength of mind, and also it will be helped to choose your heart you faithful way and to overcome all difficulties, arising up on him, masterly and with honour. Be always faithful itself and you will be always quiet and strong! I sincerely trust that you will be able to score a success on your difficult, but necessary and respected business. With King regards, your Friend and Teacher Steven Seagal. T R A C K L I S T 1. Natural noise of nightly steppe nearby the mountains of Chzhe Goang 2. David Parsons – K2 3.
