#12 - Rolands Mesters (Nordigen) on the power of free open banking, reinventing your startup every 6 months and hustling until one of your ideas sticks

Rolands is a grade-A hustler who realized early on in his career that he must build companies and products to fulfill his dreams as well as overcome some grudges. Hustling several business ideas, Rolands found himself in the fintech space crunching credit risk numbers from bank statements and now has evolved the business model into providing free open banking and building a crucial piece of financial infrastructure for the successful development of the fintech industry. We also discuss Dr Dre, Netflix and Michael Jordan

By listening to this episode you will learn:

    • Hustling all kinds of ambitious ideas to find the one that sticks
    • You don’t have to be completely insane to build a great company, although it definitely helps to build a legendary one
    • Pivoting is hard. The larger you are, the harder it gets
    • Open banking data is free (at least with Nordigen) and can be used to build a world of fintech applications
    • To pivot  fast when you sense stagnation in your current business model

    • Once you find great talent, don’t waste time and  go all-in to hire them immediately
    • If you can avoid hiring, don’t hire. The more people you have, the more nodes of communication you have to manage

The Nordics and identity: innate or imagined?

The Nordics and identity: innate or imagined?

Despite a growing focus on national identity in and outside the Nordics, the Nordic regional identity persists. The participants of this podcast explore what is takes to make a region consisting of numerous nation states a success, comparing it to other areas, such as the Baltics and Eastern Europe. An important concrete example that is discussed is an advert produced by Scandinavian Airlines in February of this year, which sought to deconstruct and construct identity markers of Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), and received a wave of feedback, both negative and positive. Listen to this podcast which starts its investigation with ideas of regional identity.

Be sure to also listen to the other nordics.info podcast on identity, which focuses more on national identity!
