Figuring Fatherhood Feat Anirban Dasgupta - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 43

I have been a big admirer of Anirban's writing for a long time. It's a shame I haven't hung out with him as much as I want to. This episode I wanted to explore a topic we seldom talk about in this episode (And not seen in most other online conversations)...being a first time dad as a millennial. Obviously having a child is primarily a mothers journey but why not talk about the clueless man next to his partner watching and wondering what does a father do in 2024? This conversation was fun, lighthearted and also quite nerdy considering the detail we go into about performing stand up comedy across the globe.

New Chapter Feat. Kanan Gill - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 42

It brings me great pleasure to release the first episode of Simpleken in 2024 with my close friend Kanan Gill. It's exciting to announce his first published novel "Acts of God" that is on sale right now on Amazon.

We talk about being trapped in blind spots, moisturising, recurring problems, self esteem , healthy relationship with work and suffering. As you can see, we covered a range of topics that most would call "alarming". Hope you enjoy this episode and hope you have a great new year ahead!

Loneliness Lessons Feat. Prashasti Singh & Saurav Mehta - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 41

Loneliness Lessons Feat. Prashasti Singh & Saurav Mehta - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 41

I learned the various aspects of friendship in this lovely conversation with Prashasti and Saurav. The way they support each other in ways that enable space, growth and also a chance to be vulnerable was so eye opening to me. Through out the episode I kept bringing up how envious I was of such a wonderful friendship. We also answered a lot of questions from the audience. A lot of laugh out loud moments in the episode with topics that are so specific to our lifestyle that I am so excited for all of you to watch it!

Is Namma Metro a Solution for Bengaluru Traffic?

Is Namma Metro a Solution for Bengaluru Traffic?

In February 2023, the Tom Tom traffic index found Bengaluru to be the world’s second-most traffic congested city. In September, the city experienced massive traffic congestion with lakhs of commuters stranded for hours. October saw the Namma Metro's Purple Line fully operational to help ease traffic. But will the metro really suffice as the solution for Bengaluru's long-term traffic needs? Or are there other factors at play? In this episode, Ananya Desai and Rohan Pai discuss Namma Metro's role in solving Bengaluru's traffic problem.

    Performance, with Kareem Khubchandani

    Performance, with Kareem Khubchandani

From Shakespeare to RuPaul, we all love a performance. But what exactly is it? What are its boundaries, its powers, its potential, its stakes? Kareem Khubchandani, who also performs as LaWhore Vagistan – “everyone's favourite desi drag queen aunty” – joins Uncommon Sense to unpack the latest thinking on refusal, repetition and more. And to discuss “Ishtyle”, Kareem’s ethnography of gay Indian nightlife in Chicago and Bangalore, which attends to desire and fun in the lives of global Indian workers too often stereotyped as cogs in the wheels of globalisation.

Kareem also reflects on the particular value of queer nightlife, and celebrates how drag kings skilfully unmask what might be the ultimate performance: heteromasculinity. We also ask: what do thinkers like Bourdieu and Foucault reveal about performance? Why is there still a way to go in our understanding of drag and how might decolonising it serve us all? Plus: why calling something “performative” is actually not about calling things “fake”? In fact, performance can make things “real”…

With reflection on Judith Butler, “Paris is Burning”, “RuPaul's Drag Race” and clubbing in Sydney and Tokyo.

    Guest: Kareem Khubchandani

Clean Comedy Feat. Hoezaay - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 40

Clean Comedy Feat. Hoezaay - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 40

I am a fan. Hoezaay is the effortless comedian who blurs the line between artist and art. Hoezaay is funny and what Hoezaay does is also funny. The sweet, calm and chill vibe that he exudes is also what I got to experience while sitting down with him for the first time (Usually we are standing). I always wanted to pick his brain on many things like navigating through so many decades of being in the Indian entertainment business. We spoke about his family, how he started and his strictly financial goals. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Viral Friendship Feat. Nirmal Pillai (MahLyf_MahRulez) & Abishek Kumar - Simple Ken Podcast | EP 39

It's good to be back after so long. After touring America and Europe I was itching to do a Simpleken episode. I had spoken to Nirmal and Abishek that I was very keen to pick their brains about their journey so far. I love also exploring what makes two very creative minds gravitate towards each other. They spoke about how they work together, feeling alienation from the scene and what the future lies for them. Hope you enjoy watching this as much as I did.

    Camilla, Queen of Wellness

    Camilla, Queen of Wellness
Central to Queen Camilla’s public image is the idea that she’s an unfussy, no-nonsense, ruddy British everywoman. But those with a nose for useless royal miscellany (ahem, your dedicated hosts) have picked up on Camilla’s frequent under-the-radar visits to an idyllic holistic health spa in southern India run by the charismatic healer to the (British) stars, Dr. Issac Mathai. The Soukya International Holistic Health Centre is frequented by the likes of Emma Thompson, Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson, and yes, Queen Camilla, who we can't say for certain DOESN'T get the "reverse childbirth" colonic irrigation. When she’s not in India, Dr. Mathai is flying to the UK to treat Camilla and Charles at home (something Mathai claims to do frequently). So who is this shadowy healer? Well, for one thing, he’s not shadowy at all. He’s surprisingly loose-lipped about his royal connections, for which we are eternally thankful.

The History of the Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysore

The History of the Wodeyar Dynasty of Mysore

In this episode of Voice of Bengaluru, host Sowjanya takes us through the history and significance of the kings of the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore.

The Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore is one of the oldest and most illustrious royal lineages in India. Ruling over the Kingdom of Mysore in present-day Karnataka for over six centuries, the Wodeyars have left an indelible mark on the region's history and culture. Known for their patronage of arts, literature, and architecture, the Wodeyars played a vital role in the development of Mysore as a cultural hub. Under their reign, Mysore witnessed a golden age of prosperity and artistic achievements. The dynasty is renowned for its opulent palaces, including the iconic Mysore Palace, and its contributions to the fields of education, administration, and social welfare. Today, the legacy of the Wodeyars continues to be cherished and celebrated in Mysore, preserving their rich heritage for generations to come. Listen in.

Parks and Recreation: The Curious Case of Cubbon Park

The horticulture department which maintains Bangalore’s iconic Cubbon Park, recently enforced restrictions on citizens who they believe ‘misuse the park in many ways, including playing games or engaging in romantic gestures’. Apart from the sheer harassment and moral policing, this entails, the new restrictions also go against the government’s AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme and the National Urban Greening Policy, 2014 which provides guidelines for the development of parks and green spaces in urban areas to encourage the creation of open spaces for public use.

In this episode, Carl Jaison and Saurabh Todi discuss the impact of the restrictions on citizens’ rights, ways by which the restrictions could have been communicated better, and potential remedies & suggestions to improve the prevailing situation.
