    A Deep Dive into Player Development with Duke University's Tyler Rost

    Today we’re sitting down with Tyler Rost, Duke University’s Director of Player Development. Tyler brings a great deal of experience to the table and is a great listen. Topics include:

    • The full on-boarding process for freshman
    • Merging data with “real” feel
    • Creating a great “team” environment both on and off the field

    Tyler joined the Duke Baseball coaching staff as the Director of Player Development in February of 2021. In his role, he oversees all technology, analytics and data collection and implementation for individual player development. In addition, he coordinates efforts with sports performance coaches, team nutritionists and the athletic training staff.

    Prior to Duke, Tyler was Assistant Coach at North Carolina Central in 2020-2021, after serving as a coach at Winston Sale State (2018-2020), Wake Tech CC and Greenville. Tyler was a four-year starter at Cedarville University from 2008 through 2011 and played two seasons of professional baseball as an outfielder for the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League.

    My guest today is Brandon Golden, former collegiate and MiLB Performance Coach, currently with 5 Tool Connection a performance science company.  I met Brandon recently at the Wake Forest Bridge seminar and walked away very impressed with his unique approach.  We will be discussing much of what he takes his athletes through in preparation for a long season of baseball.  Topics include:

    • Different athletes training windows
    • Velocity-Based Training (VBT)
    • Assessing mobility on Day 1

    Brandon began his career as a volunteer Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with High Point, Mississippi State and Wake Forest from 2012 -2014.  He joined USA Baseball as a Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2015 and was later with Charleston Southern, and East Carolina, before joining the LA Dodgers from 2020 - 2022 as a Performance Coach. 

    Brandon has a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from East Carolina University and a Master's from St. John's in Sports Management. He can be reached on his Twitter account @coachBGolden.

    Merging Data with Application with University of Iowa's Robin Lund

    My guest today is Robin Lund, pitching coach at the University of Iowa.  Lund is in his fifth season as an assistant coach at Iowa, including having previously worked with the hitters and outfielders during his first season. Lund earned his Bachelor’s Degree in education from Whitworth College and his Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Eastern Washington. He earned his PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Idaho.

    This past spring, Coach Lund oversaw an Iowa pitching staff that was among the nation’s best, as it ranked second nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.88), third in strikeouts per nine innings (11.2), fourth in ERA (3.72) and 11th in WHIP (1.29). The staff led the Big Ten in virtually every pitching category during the season and it racked up a program record 609 strikeouts, shattering the previous record of 499 set in 2018.

    Covering the Bucket List to Maximize Performance with Notre Dame's John Wagle

    My guest today is John Wagle, Associate Athletics Director of Sports Performance at Notre Dame University.  Today, we’ll be talking about maximizing the relationship within sports performance areas to impact baseball players through enhancing the collaborative efforts between strength and conditioning, nutrition, athletic training and sports psychology.

    John earned his PhD in Sport Physiology at East Tennessee State.  He also holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from Western Illinois University, as well as an MBA from Loyola University in Chicago.

    Previously, he was with the Kansas City Royals for four years as their Director of Performance / Science and Player Development.   John also worked at DePaul University for three years, including his final two years as the Blue Demons’ Director of Sports Performance.

    Training the College Athlete with TCU's Zach Dechant

    Today we’re sitting down with TCU's (Texas Christian University) Zach Dechant and discussing some of the challenges that athletes and coaches face day-in and day-out during the college baseball season, as well as what’s to be expected from the young athletes entering a Division 1 Program.

    Zach has been at TCU since 2008 and is currently the Assistant Athletic Director of Human Performance and oversees baseball player development. He also handles the development and implementation of the TCU Sports Performance Internship Program that has been in place for over 15 years.

    During the baseball off-seasons, he also trains many young athletes as well as MLB / MiLB players in his private practice.  He’s the author of the book, “Movement over Maxes”  and most importantly also recently a new dad.
