    Hinterkaifeck
This was a farming area.  Quiet.  Calm.  A few different things started to make neighbors and townspeople suspicious that something ominous had gone at Hinterkaifeck.  Unfortunately, they were right, and what they would find would end up being one of Germany's most horrific unsolved crimes.

    Dark Enigma - Nymphenburg Palace

    Dark Enigma - Nymphenburg Palace
Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be disturbing, frightening and in some cases offensive. Listener Discretion is advised – there is very adult content ahead and you have been warned.

Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma....

And on today’s Dark enigma we’re going to jump back to some travel themed stories as I had a ton of emails letting me know you really liked learning about new places. And we all know, I aim to please…. That’s me, people pleaser extraordinaire. Anyways, enough of that… as always, we will be playing our drinking game but please remember the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. And since our story tonight is from Deutchland, we must think Oktoberfest so tonight’s libation is going to be, you guessed it… BEER!! Now if you want to be true to the German roots, you need to get a very heady lager, but really, it’s your choice.

Now, for the game part… every time I say Palace that will be a single shot and every time I say Munich, that’s a double shot. Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma…and the story of a wicked, evil-eyed dancer who brought down a king. That’s, right, this is how a Bavarian king’s obsession with beautiful women—including the infamous actress Lola Montez—cost him his throne. So let’s jump in head first my heathens….

Of the innumerable palaces that dot the Bavarian lands, few are as bizarre and delightful as the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. Situated on what was once the western outskirts of the city, the palace was begun in 1664 and expanded and redecorated for two centuries. It is dominated by, for lack of a better description, a stretched out cubic Italianate edifice which is in turn flanked by wings that are capped by smaller cubes. Pyramid roofs of red-orange top each of the cubes, contrasting nicely with the cream and periwinkle grey walls. Its Baroque grounds are famed for its swans as well as the show-stopping Amalienburg Hall of Mirrors. The Rococo and Neoclassical interior is no less stunning, most notably the lavish Great Hall.

    Beer Styles # 29 - Munich-Style Helles

    Beer Styles # 29 - Munich-Style Helles
    Munich-Style Helles

    (Description courtesy of Beer Advocate)

“Helles” means “pale in color,” as these beers are often golden. The German-style Helles lager is a bit rounder or fuller-bodied than light lager and even all-malt pilsners. Helles lager beers offer a touch of sweetness that balance a measurable addition of spicy German hop flavor and light bitterness. The malt character is soft and bready, making it a terrific complement to light dishes such as salad or fresh shellfish, like clams. Clean and crisp, this is a refreshing beer with substance.

    -Color – Pale to Golden

-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present

Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Malt aroma and flavor are pronounced. Low levels of yeast-produced sulfur aromas and flavors may be present. Malt character is sometimes bready and suggestive of lightly toasted malted barley. There should be no caramel character.

    - Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness Hop aroma is not perceived to low. Hop flavor is very low to low, derived from noble-type hops.

    -Four Noble Hops
    oHallertauer Mittelfrüh.
    oTettnang.
    oSpalt.
    oSaaz.

    -Body: Medium

    -ABV: 4.8%-5.6%

-Glassware: Flute Glass - The world of champagne lends elegance to certain types of beer. Long and narrow bodies ensure that carbonation doesn't dissipate too quickly and showcase a lively carbonation or sparkling color. Stems will often be a bit shorter than the traditional champagne glass, but not necessarily.

Benefits: Enhances and showcases carbonation. Releases volatiles quickly for a more intense upfront aroma.

184: Eighty Days Around the World

184: Eighty Days Around the World

It had just started to drizzle again. My family and I were headed to Richmond, Virginia, via Interstate 64, confronting a bit of rain along the way. We had just taken a timed family selfie at the Virginia is For Lovers sign outside the state welcome center, when a man on what I thought was a motorcycle pulled up—camouflage jacket drenched with rain. He asked if I would take a photo of him. I obliged, taking his cellphone, thinking that if he’d arrived a minute earlier we wouldn’t have had to use the timer on mine.

Given the amount of gear he was carrying, it was clear this was a man on a mission. Detecting an accent, I asked where he was from. He said he was coming from San Francisco, a city we had also recently departed, but by air. Pressing further, I discovered this sopping, sociable sojourner came all the way from Germany and was on the tail end of a remarkable journey.

Sixteen thousand eight hundred and forty-seven miles. Eighty days. Eighteen countries. Three Vespa scooters. One man. A few weeks later, Markus Mayer would become the first person to complete a solo scooter trip around the world in just 80 days.

    #294: Rocker (1972) & Die Sieger (1994)

    #294: Rocker (1972) & Die Sieger (1994)

Episode 19 - Jack of Jack's Abby Lagers Talks Beer

Episode 19 - Jack of Jack's Abby Lagers Talks Beer
Michael speaks to Jack Hendler, Co-Founder of Jack's Abby in Framingham, MA. They explore the success of Jack's Abby Lagers and discuss the newer Springdale unit producing Oak Barrel Aged Ales.

Founded in 2011 by three brothers, Jack, Eric, and Sam Hendler, Jack’s Abby has become a mainstay of the craft brewing scene in the Northeast and nationwide.

Jack’s Abby brews lagers, and only lagers. Born in the high alps of Bavaria over 200 years ago, lagers became a beloved brew all across Europe. Lagers feature a distinctive smoothness and fullness that no other beer has and we think everyone deserves.

Our mission is to create truly distinctive lagers featuring locally grown ingredients, traditional German brewing standards, and American innovation.

Springdale by Jack’s Abby was founded in 2016 as the experimental and barrel-aging arm of Jack’s Abby Brewing. With curiosity, creativity and the support of our talented production team, we’ve spent our first year crafting dozens of wild and barrel-fermented beers, as well as a line of traditionally fermented ales.

Ales, IPAs and barrel-aged beers make up the core of Springdale’s portfolio. Pearly, our country-style can-conditioned witbier is light, lively and expressive, while our breakfast stout Brigadeiro is packed with luscious flavors of coffee and chocolate. We also can our IPAs and suggest drinking them fresh; they’re packed with huge, expressive hop flavors from American and Australian hops. Our barrel-aged series, on the other hand, can be cellared indefinitely. This includes unfruited wild ales and beers fermented on a wide variety of fruit, including apricots (Apriculture) cherries (Kriek Mythology) and raspberries (Poive Raz).
