Baseball and BBQ Episode #124: Jeff Mangold, strength and conditioning coach for the World Series Champion, NY Yankees and Rusty Monson, Utah's Salt City Barbecue pitmaster and podcast host

Jeff Mangold, strength and conditioning coach for the 1998-2000 World Series Champion, New York Yankees and Rusty Monson, Utah's Salt City Barbecue pitmaster and podcast host make episode #124 an outstanding show.

Jeff Mangold served as the head strength and conditioning coach for the New York Yankees from 1984-1988 and from 1998-2006.  During his tenure, the Bronx Bombers won nine straight American League East Titles, appeared in five World Series, and won three World Series Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.  Jeff also worked for the New York Mets from 1993 to 1996 and designed the strength and conditioning facilities at both Yankee and Shea stadiums.  Jeff is the author of Power and Pinstripes:  My Years Training the New York Yankees.  The book is filled with incredible stories from both of his times with the NY Yankees, which includes interactions with George Steinbrenner, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, and Lou Piniella.  Jeff worked with the Core Four of the World Series Champions, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera.  Jeff shares many of those stories and also talks about how he ended up with a piece of baseball history which he sold for a pretty hefty sum.  Enjoy the interview and purchase the book.

Rusty Monson has loved live fire cooking since he was a young child.  He has turned his passion for barbecue into his career and now is the proud owner of Utah's Salt City Barbecue food truck.  Besides competing in competition barbecue and running the food truck, Rusty can also talk quite eloquently on barbecue.  He shares his knowledge and interest in barbecue as a monthly embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show with host Greg Rempe.  In addition to his monthly correspondent duties, Rusty is a co-host along with Anthony Lujan on The Pitmaster's Podcast.  It may surprise you to hear what his top-selling food truck item is, but what is not surprising is how much you will enjoy all that Rusty has to offer on life and cooking.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #83: Author, Thomas Gilbert & Paulie Gee of Paulie Gee's Pizzeria

Baseball and BBQ Episode #83: Author, Thomas Gilbert & Paulie Gee of Paulie Gee's Pizzeria

Episode 83 has two phenomenal guests with so much to say that we did not have the heart to end the interviews, so we split the conversations into two parts.

Thomas W. Gilbert is the author of How Baseball Happened:  Outrageous Lies Exposed!  The True Story Revealed.  The book shatters the many myths which so many of us believe are true on baseball's origins, and it provides fascinating stories about its many true founders.  How this great game came to be the sport we love today is quite interesting and wonderful.  Thomas takes us back through time and it is a journey you will thoroughly enjoy.  Part two is next and includes plenty of barbecue talk.

Paulie Gee took some time to discover his true passion, but once he discovered it, he never looked back.  In just 10 years he has become a name synonymous with absolutely delicious pizza.  The high heat which grills produce is perfect for pizza making and Paulie is considered one of the best.  He says he was nervous about coming on since we have had many well known guests, but Paulie does not realize how excited we were to have him on.  Pizza, barbecue, and baseball are among the things we discuss, but you get the feeling there is not much he cannot talk about with an infectious passion.  Come back for part two, which if you can believe it will be even better.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and  http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #81: Kurt Bevacqua and Doug Scheiding, Talking Baseball Hall of Fame and Barbecue

Baseball and BBQ Episode #81: Kurt Bevacqua and Doug Scheiding, Talking Baseball Hall of Fame and Barbecue

They're baaack!  Two great guests return for a spirited discussion on baseball, including who should get in the MLB Hall of Fame and, of course, barbecue.

Kurt Bevacqua is a 15-year Major League Baseball veteran who played for five different teams, most notably the San Diego Padres.  He not only played in the 1984 World Series, but he hit two home runs in that series.  Staying in the Major Leagues for 15 years is no easy task, but he managed to do that and excel while playing with some of the game's greats.  He knows a ton about the game, and he shares his knowledge and opinions.  He was a huge hit the first time we had him on, and we could not wait to bring him on again.

Doug Scheiding makes a triumphant return and awes us with his incredible baseball knowledge. If you are familiar with his fine work as the longest running embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show, you know he is a rocket scientist, an award-winning pitmaster for the Rogue Cookers barbecue competition team, a Traeger Pellet Grills representative, and a Head Country brand ambassador. What you may not know is that he is an avid Chicago Cubs fan and an extremely knowledgeable baseball fan. Doug has very quickly become a fan favorite, and we hope you will enjoy all that he brings to the show.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #80: Howard Johnson talking Baseball and Barbecue

Baseball and BBQ Episode #80: Howard Johnson talking Baseball and Barbecue

Ring in the New Year and celebrate by listening to bonus episode 80.

Howard Johnson or HoJo as millions of baseball fans affectionately call him is another of our perfect guests discussing both baseball and barbecue.  He was a member of two World Series winning teams, a three-time member of the 30-30 club, and a two-time All-Star.  With numerous baseball accolades to discuss, it may be surprising how much he loves to talk about barbecue.  Outstanding ballplayer, barbecue connoisseur, and rib-eating contest winner can all be used when discussing his life's story.  You will enjoy this interview even if you only like one of the topics, but if you like both baseball and barbecue you will absolutely love it.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
