Baseball and BBQ Episode #112: John Vampatella, Author of The Forgotten Game and Vic Clevenger, Award Winning Pitmaster Known As The Cookin' Comedian

Episode #112 features John Vampatella, author of The Forgotten Game and award winning pitmaster, Vic Clevenger.

John Vampatella is an outstanding author whose latest project is The Forgotten Game which details one of the greatest games in baseball history between the two most bitter rivals in the sport, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.  In the 2004 American League Championship Series the two teams faced off and it looked as if the Yankees who had taken the first three games in the best of seven series were about to win and advance to yet another World Series appearance until Boston miraculously won game 4.  Most fans remember Curt Schilling’s sutured ankle in game 6, but game 5 was a do-or-die moment for the Red Sox, and they delivered in epic fashion. Yet, despite being the pivotal game in the series, it hasn’t drawn the attention the others have.  The Forgotten Game breaks down game 5 on a virtual pitch-by-pitch basis, from the battle between Pedro Martinez and Mike Mussina, to the clutch performances by Tim Wakefield and David Ortiz, while breaking down the strategies the managers employed, and stories of how various players made their way to their respective teams for that fateful night.  The game lasted 14 pressure filled innings and John Vampatella has created a book which is just as exciting as the game itself.

Vic Clevenger is a comedian, speaker, freelance writer, inventor, and award winning pitmaster.  He truly is a barbecue Renaissance man and is often referred to as the Cookin' Comedian.  Vic was kind enough to join us as he made his way back from the World Food Championships in Dallas, Texas.  Almost immediately we could tell we were going to have a great conversation,  but would not have enough time.  He is definitely on the list of guests we will need to have back.  His latest project is the Chimney Cartel which is a new type of cooker.  That is in addition to his being a brand ambassador for B&B Charcoal.  We hope you will enjoy hearing from a pitmaster who loves life as longs as barbecue is a part of it.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #104: Erik Sherman, Author of Two Sides of Glory, Part 2 and Lee Ann Whippen, Champion Pitmaster

Baseball and BBQ Episode #104: Erik Sherman, Author of Two Sides of Glory, Part 2 and Lee Ann Whippen, Champion Pitmaster

Episode 104 features Part 2 with author, Erik Sherman and a visit with pitmaster extraordinaire, Lee Ann Whippen.

Erik Sherman writes baseball books and he does that exceptionally well.  Whether the books are about one specific player or one specific team, Erik provides wonderful and unique perspectives which baseball fans will thoroughly enjoy.  His latest project will be a welcome addition to any baseball fans library.  In Two Sides of Glory:  The 1986 Boston Red Sox In Their Own Words, Erik provides a glimpse into something rarely seen.  Frequently, books are written about the winning teams, but how often does one have the chance to read about the losing team and learn of their feelings as well as finding out about things happening with their lives.  All of that and so much more is in Two Sides of Glory.  The 1986 Boston Red Sox lost game six to the New York Mets in an unforgettable and devastating fashion and then proceeded to lose game seven and had to watch as the New York Mets celebrated and prevented them from winning their first World Series in 68 years.  The team was made up of some of the most well-known and talented players to ever wear their team's laundry and the stories and lesser known facts will make this an interview you will enjoy about a book you will not be able to put-down until the last page.  Part one of the interview was good, but part two is even better.

Lee Ann Whippen has found a way to combine her barbecuing skills, her ease in front of a camera, and her strong work ethic into a delicious recipe for success.  She developed her love of cooking barbecue from an early age, learning from her dad, and she has used that knowledge and love to become an extremely well-known and respected pitmaster.  As a competition cook she has won multiple world, national, and state barbecue championships.  On television, she has shone brightly on various competition shows, winning the premier season of BBQ Brawl on Food Network and defeating Bobby Flay on Throwdown with Bobby Flay.  She is also a restaurateur who has owned restaurants in Virginia, Illinois, and Florida.  She is a two-time finalist for the BBQ Hall of Fame and she has no qualms discussing being a woman pitmaster in a mostly male dominated field as well as the various effects it has had on her career.  She recently became an official ambassador for Pit Boss Grills.  With all of that going on, she still took the time to join us for a  wonderful conversation.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #102: Joey Machado from Blues Hog & Tim Neverett, Author of Covid Curveball, the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season

Baseball and BBQ Episode #102: Joey Machado from Blues Hog & Tim Neverett, Author of Covid Curveball, the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season

Episode 102 is filled with baseball, barbecue, and a contest for the greatest podcast audience ever.

Joey Machado is a marketing guru and the barbecue community is lucky he is a part of it.  In part two of our interview we learn more about Blues Hog BBQ and Gateway Drum Smokers, but it humorously begins with a Seinfeld TV show reference.  From there we learn why Tim Scheer is a genius and has Joey's, as well as the barbecue industry's ultimate respect.  Joey provides exceptional information, but more importantly he is a prime example of how barbecue people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet.

Tim Neverett spent last year like most of America, unsure of what each day would bring during a pandemic.  The difference though is that most of America does not work as a television and radio play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  In 2020, the major league baseball season, usually a 162 game marathon became a 60 game sprint played in front of empty/cardboard cutout filled stands.  Each day Tim chronicled his time with the team as well as what was happening in this country outside of baseball.  The abbreviated 60 game season was hard fought and ultimately won by the Dodgers.  Covid Curveball:  An Inside View of the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers World Championship Season is Tim's in-depth look at one of the strangest baseball season's ever, and we were lucky to have the chance to discuss this great book.

Elda's Kitchen was featured in episode 97 as we interviewed co-owner, Brie Blackford.  They are now sponsoring a contest specifically for our listeners.  We wish everyone good luck.

In-between the two interviews Leonard tells us about a special day he spent at Yankee Stadium.  Without spoiling it, the day included Tino Martinez and Mariano Rivera.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #101: Field of Dreams Baseball Talk, Andrea Williams, Author of Baseball's Leading Lady, and Joey Machado from Blues Hog BBQ

Baseball and BBQ Episode #101: Field of Dreams Baseball Talk, Andrea Williams, Author of Baseball's Leading Lady, and Joey Machado from Blues Hog BBQ

Episode 101 is overloaded with incredible guests and wonderful discussions.

MLB at Field of Dreams Game was a huge success and we were fortunate to speak with three extremely dedicated baseball fans who made the trek to Dyersville, Iowa to witness this highly anticipated game.  Join us as we welcome previous show guest, Brian LoPinto, as well as first timers to the show, Dan Malley and Aaron Nelsen.  They give us their first-hand impressions and experiences.  Find out what it was like to be at the game, the types of food served, and even how much these three fans paid for this unique experience which all of them said was well worth it.

Andrea Williams admits that prior to getting a job in marketing and development at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri she knew nothing regarding Effa Manley, the subject of her wonderful book, Baseball's Leading Lady:  Effa Manley and the Rise and Fall of the Negro LeaguesHowever, once she heard about this wonderful woman who is the only woman inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, she knew she needed to learn more and her many hours of research and writing are her gift to us.  Effa ran the Newark Eagles with her husband, Abe Manley, from 1935 to 1948.  Andrea provides us with a look at the life of someone who was not about to let skin color or gender stop her from doing what she wanted to do and helping those she needed to help.  Effa Manley's story inspired Andrea, and the stories in this book will hopefully inspire you as much they did us.

Joey Machado is excellent at marketing and that excellence is being felt throughout the barbecue community.  His passion for the products he represents has always shone through and that continues as he works with Blues Hog BBQ and Gateway Drum Smokers.  He is extremely entertaining and frankly did not even need us to ask him more than one question as he has a lot to say, and we are the beneficiaries as we get to learn from someone who has been a blessing for the barbecue industry.  Enjoy part one and look forward to part two.

We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #87: Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, Steve Ray from Owls Nest BBQ and Gary Looney from Angels Spring Training Camp

Baseball and BBQ Episode #87: Marjorie Adams, Baseball Royalty, Steve Ray from Owls Nest BBQ and Gary Looney from Angels Spring Training Camp

Triple plays are a rarity, but we give you one with episode 87.

Marjorie Adams is the great-granddaughter of Daniel Lucius "Doc" Adams who wrote the 1857 "Laws of Base Ball" as well as creating the shortstop position and is considered to be one of baseball's founders.  The original "Laws of Base Ball" were sold at an auction in 2016 for $3.26 million.  Despite all of this, he is still not a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but if our guest has anything to do with it, that blatant over site will soon be corrected.  This interview would not be possible without the introduction provided by our episode 86 guest, Jeff Kornhaas who we all know as Pinetar.  Pinetar sits in with us and adds his wonderful contributions to a conversation we hoped would never end.  Please enjoy our talk with someone we consider to be as close to baseball royalty as one can get.

Steve Ray is known to the barbecue world for so many reasons. He is the pitmaster on the Owls Nest BBQ team, owner of the Owls Nest Barbecue Supply Shop in Ooltewah, Tennessee, and he was an embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show. He even filled in twice as host for the BBQ Central Show. What is absolutely incredible is that Steve first became interested in barbecue when he saw the television show, BBQ Pitmasters in his 50's, and it sparked a desire which has now become an obsession. We are the fortunate ones he followed this newfound passion as we get to converse with a humble, yet extremely knowledgeable cook.

Gary Looney makes his long awaited return. You may recall that in episode 56 we welcomed Gary as Jeff had met him last year on his visit to spring training in Arizona just prior to the pandemic shutting everything down. We asked Gary to come back on to discuss what spring training during the pandemic is like and he did not disappoint. Gary gave us some great insight and answered our questions on how this year's training camp is unlike any others.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #85: Bobby Valentine

Baseball and BBQ Episode #85: Bobby Valentine

We love our listeners and our guests so on this day of love we present you with a very special Valentine's Day episode, 85.

Bobby Valentine or as most people call him, Bobby V is one of the most loved, well known, respected, colorful, and celebrated ambassadors of the game.  His life has been what movies are made of and his incredible stories will keep you riveted. A former Major League Baseball player and manager in both the United States and Japan; he currently works as the athletic director at Sacred Heart University.  Many people know him for one game in which he was ejected and then came back in disguise, but that is a mere drop in the bucket in a career and life that is filled with special people and events.  He has worked for a man who would one day become President of the United States, been a restaurateur, a champion ballroom dancer, an ESPN baseball analyst, and manager of the New York Mets as they faced the New York Yankees in the famous Subway Series in the year 2000.

We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and we hope you will too.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #83: Author, Thomas Gilbert & Paulie Gee of Paulie Gee's Pizzeria

Baseball and BBQ Episode #83: Author, Thomas Gilbert & Paulie Gee of Paulie Gee's Pizzeria

Episode 83 has two phenomenal guests with so much to say that we did not have the heart to end the interviews, so we split the conversations into two parts.

Thomas W. Gilbert is the author of How Baseball Happened:  Outrageous Lies Exposed!  The True Story Revealed.  The book shatters the many myths which so many of us believe are true on baseball's origins, and it provides fascinating stories about its many true founders.  How this great game came to be the sport we love today is quite interesting and wonderful.  Thomas takes us back through time and it is a journey you will thoroughly enjoy.  Part two is next and includes plenty of barbecue talk.

Paulie Gee took some time to discover his true passion, but once he discovered it, he never looked back.  In just 10 years he has become a name synonymous with absolutely delicious pizza.  The high heat which grills produce is perfect for pizza making and Paulie is considered one of the best.  He says he was nervous about coming on since we have had many well known guests, but Paulie does not realize how excited we were to have him on.  Pizza, barbecue, and baseball are among the things we discuss, but you get the feeling there is not much he cannot talk about with an infectious passion.  Come back for part two, which if you can believe it will be even better.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Ring in the New Year and celebrate by listening to bonus episode 80.

Howard Johnson or HoJo as millions of baseball fans affectionately call him is another of our perfect guests discussing both baseball and barbecue.  He was a member of two World Series winning teams, a three-time member of the 30-30 club, and a two-time All-Star.  With numerous baseball accolades to discuss, it may be surprising how much he loves to talk about barbecue.  Outstanding ballplayer, barbecue connoisseur, and rib-eating contest winner can all be used when discussing his life's story.  You will enjoy this interview even if you only like one of the topics, but if you like both baseball and barbecue you will absolutely love it.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #71 - Joan Ryan, author of Intangibles

Baseball and BBQ Episode #71 - Joan Ryan, author of Intangibles

    A team chemistry filled episode.

Joan Ryan is an award-winning journalist and author of five books. We were extremely fortunate to discuss her latest effort, Intangibles: Unlocking the Science and Soul of Team Chemistry. The book explains team chemistry through incredible interviews and stories helping to demystify this very real phenomenon. Are you a cynic; a non-believer? You won't be once you hear this interview with Joan, a sports journalist who has covered every major sporting event from the Super Bowl and the World Series to the Olympics and championship fights. Her sports columns and features earned 13 Associated Press Sports Editors Awards, the National Headliner Award, the Women's Sports Foundation's Journalism Award, and the prestigious Edgar A. Poe Award. She is a member of the Pandemic Baseball Book Club and her book is a must-read and treasure to have as part of your home library.

Michael Mullen and Brett Mandel join us briefly to discuss their company, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com and their special promotion to benefit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, as well as their newly released home plate shaped wooden cutting board and other soon to be released grilling tools.  Great guys and a wonderful company.

We conclude the show with the song, "Ace & Bobo" from our friends Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.  You can find the song on Facebook at Dave Dresser Music or find the song and video on YouTube.  While at Dave Dresser Music or YouTube enjoy some of their other songs as well.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #70 - Doug Scheiding of Traeger (part 2) and Mitchell Nathanson author of Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original, plus a special return of the musician and poet

Baseball and BBQ Episode #70 - Doug Scheiding of Traeger (part 2) and Mitchell Nathanson author of Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original, plus a special return of the musician and poet

Launching a new show introduction while hosting some incredible guests.  Be prepared to be amazed.

Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky make beautiful music which has become integral to the show while providing us with an incredible ending for most episodes. They have gifted us an awesome introduction which will make you smile and sing along. We wouldn't dream of playing it for the first time without having them on and that's just what we have done as the musician and the poet return to the show which proudly introduced the world to their song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home."

Doug Scheiding is back for part two of the interview that everyone is talking about. Part one merely scratched the surface of a life that is filled with two great passions, baseball and barbecue. In this part, Doug will talk about Traeger Pellet Grills, provide cooking tips, including talk on sauces and rubs. He also entertains with his favorite baseball moments and some talk on his beloved Chicago Cubs. One interview, divided into two parts is all that is needed to see why Doug has quickly become a show and fan favorite.

Mitchell Nathanson is a Professor of Law at Villanova University and the author of numerous books and articles on baseball. He is a two-time winner of the McFarland-SABR Award, presented in recognition of the best historical or biographical baseball articles of the year. He is the author of Bouton: The Life of a Baseball Original. The book is an amazing look at the life of a man who won 62 Major League Baseball games, but impacted the game, its players, and fans in ways that not many ever have or ever will. The book is a must-read for lovers of this great game and it's incredible history while Mitchell is wonderfully entertaining with stories you will want to share with fellow baseball lovers.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #69 - '24' Author John Shea and Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers

Baseball and BBQ Episode #69 - '24' Author John Shea and Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers

Just when you thought the show couldn't get any better, episode 69 comes along with two amazing guests.

John Shea had the enviable task of working with, perhaps the greatest baseball player ever, Willie Mays, as they wrote, 24: Life Stories and Lessons from the Say Hey Kid.  The book is filled with wonderful stories and thoughts from the mind of an American icon, treasure, and hero.  Willie Mays, was a major-league center fielder for 22 seasons with the New York Giants, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets, as well as playing for the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leagues.  He hit 660 home runs, collected 3,283 hits, stole 338 bases, earned 12 Gold Glove Awards, played in 24 All-Star Games, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979.  Not every author could handle the daunting task of working with an icon whose life's work could fill volumes, but Shea, an award-winning national baseball writer at the San Francisco Chronicle and author of four baseball books was more than able to handle the challenge. The interview merely scratches the surface of an amazing book you will be pleased to add to your collection.

Doug Scheiding is a true renaissance man. For our devoted listeners who keep track of these things, he is the first rocket scientist we have had as a guest. To the barbecue world, he is a wearer of many hats, including pitmaster of the award winning competition barbecue team, Rogue Cookers, embedded correspondent on The BBQ Central Show, Traeger Pellet Grills representative, and Head Country brand ambassador. He is also an avid Chicago Cubs fan and quite a knowledgeable baseball fan. In addition to all of that, he is just one of the nicest guys, in barbecue or out, that you would ever want to meet. We are so lucky and pleased to bring you part one of this wonderful conversation.

We once again conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #65 - Bob Kendrick returns plus the team from Baseballbbq.com

Baseball and BBQ Episode #65 - Bob Kendrick returns plus the team from Baseballbbq.com

Episode 65 is guaranteed to satisfy baseball and barbecue lovers.

Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, https://nlbm.com/ was our very first podcast guest, and we are thrilled that he is back to talk more baseball history.  He is a wonderful storyteller, and we ask him about the African American baseball players who were the first to play on each of the 16 teams in existence after Jackie Robinson first broke baseball's color barrier in 1947.  There is not much Bob does not know about baseball history, so we throw in some more questions, including our thirst for knowledge about the great Oscar Charleston. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Negro Leagues and Jeff and Len both tip our caps as a show of admiration and respect.

Michael Mullen and Brett Mandel are joining us for the first time, but our devoted listeners should already be very familiar with their company, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com/ as we have been promoting their wonderful one-of-a-kind, personalized baseball themed barbecue tools and hats and shirts.  We learn where the idea for this new and exciting business came from, what they are doing at present, and where they are heading.  This is a fantastic company that shares our love for baseball and barbecue and uses that love in their great products.  Listen to the interview, visit their website, and purchase any of the numerous products that will become the center of attention at your next barbecue.

We once again conclude the show with the wonderful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.

Please know how much we appreciate our listeners.  We hope that all of you are staying safe.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #63 - Wayne Randazzo, Part 2 of Thermoworks and Chris Lopresti

Baseball and BBQ Episode #63 - Wayne Randazzo, Part 2 of Thermoworks and Chris Lopresti

Episode 63 is an interview trifecta and contains more excitement than many can handle, but be daring and give it a try.

Wayne Randazzo is a treat to listen to.  As one half of the New York Mets radio broadcast team, along with Howie Rose, he paints a word picture so clearly, vividly, and beautifully, that all you need to do is close your eyes and you are instantly transported to a prime stadium seat.  Add that to his broad knowledge and wonderful stories and you have a broadcast you are not soon to forget, as well as an interview you will truly enjoy.

It's the Kyle Halvorson and Martin Earl interview, Part 2.  They represent Thermoworks, the leading manufacturer of numerous temperature devices. Thermoworks award winning products are incredibly unique and quite different than any other devices available today and both Kyle and Martin are wonderful spokespersons.  If you are into cool gadgets and love talking about the latest technology then this is for you.

Chris Lopresti also known as C-Lo is a broadcaster who has the voice and charisma to become one of the top personalities in his field.  Whether he is reporting on a local sports team or providing updates on the prior night's events, he is a delight to listen to.  We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and hope you will too.

We once again conclude the show with the wonderful song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from Dave Dresser and Shel Krakofsky.
