Could Your Body Image Issues Connect to ADHD? Featuring Dr. Tamara Rosier

Could Your Body Image Issues Connect to ADHD? Featuring Dr. Tamara Rosier

Today Heather has a fascinating discussion with Tamara Rosier, PhD about the connections between ADHD and body image issues and eating disorders. Heather explores this topic as an extension of personal research she's been doing about her own undetected ADHD type symptoms and traits. Dr. Rosier walks Heather through several ways that ADHD connects and may contribute to body image issues and eating disorders including:

*How the ADHD (neurodivergent) brain operates from the limbic system instead of the prefrontal cortex, making our bodies stay in a "fight or flight" response, which makes us constantly feel threatened or unsafe.

*How ADHD often is found in high functioning women.

*How ADHD can make us perfect victims for narcissists.

*How Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria connects to body image issues and potential eating disorders or disordered eating.

*Why the hyper vigilance of the ADHD brain may cause us to overdo it in exercise.

*Why the neurodivergent may experience the feelings of being "all or nothing" - Either working too hard/overworking or doing nothing at all.

*How ADHD responses are similar to trauma responses, though some have both operating at same time.

*Why being curious about what's going on in your brain is helpful.

Eating Disorders and Body Image | feat. The London Centre

Eating Disorders and Body Image | feat. The London Centre

This episode focuses on an important topic that is becoming more and more prevalent.

An eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia is a severe psychological eating disorder where an individual restricts their food intake to lose weight or avoid weight gain.

Recorded at The London Centre for Eating Disorders and Body Image, I’m joined by Dr Bryony Bamford, Founder and Director and Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Christina de Beukelaar, The London Centre’s Lead Dietitian.

We discuss a number of questions that surround eating disorders and the role of a clinical psychologist and dietician when treating such a difficult and debilitating illness. These include:

    •  Why eating disorders are so hard to treat.
    • The common personality traits seen in eating disorders.
    • Other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED).
    • The role a dietitian plays in treating eating disorders, a psychological illness.
    • What is refeeding syndrome and why is this such an important risk in eating disorder patients?
    • What an initial consultation and process with a patient looks like.
    • How treatment plans vary for different eating disorders and different ways of controlling weight such as laxatives, purging and over-exercises.
    • Treating eating disorders with patients who have strict vegan diets.
    • Thoughts on showing calories on restaurant menus.
    • How the pandemic impacted the number suffering with eating disorders.
    • How social media is contributing to the rise in eating disorders.
    • Advice for parents or people coming to terms with an eating disorder.
    • How to seek help.

The Salubrious Benefits of Going for a Walk

The Salubrious Benefits of Going for a Walk

Did you know that many executives do their interviews while walking with a potential employee outside? Research has shown that walking is good for your mental and physical health, but that walking outside, in nature has the added benefit of increasing the mind's ability to think creatively.  If you have a problem that you need to solve, going for a walk will help you solve it in many more ways than if you didn't go for a walk.

Tune into this week's show as Kevin and Niseema talk about the salubrious benefits of going for a walk. A perfect way to end the summer months is with an evening walk.

    How to think about anxiety

    How to think about anxiety

Anxiety and pain are the primary drivers of medical visits, as well as two of the more complicated symptoms to break down in a meaningful way. In this mini-episode, Dr. H presents the metaphor of "below the neck" vs "above the neck" anxiety to help us think about anxiety in a way that might better guide diagnosis and treatment. "Above the neck" anxiety emanates from the ruminating/imagining/obsessing/spin-cycle brain, while "below the neck" anxiety is the body's fight/flight response, with adrenaline coursing through the body to send the blaring smoke alarm signal of impending danger...even where there is no apparent immediate threat.

It matters greatly whether anxiety initially sparks from above or below, and the failure to pinpoint the source can lead to treatment failure and prolonged suffering.  Obsessional/ruminative anxiety responds best to mindfulness meditation, cognitive therapy, and SSRIs; somatic/adrenaline anxiety requires interventions such as biofeedback, (intensive) aerobic exercise, meditation, beta blockers, and the various somatic trauma therapies (EMDR, somatic experiencing, Hakomi). Benzodiazepines address both types, but at significant potential cost.

This document will cover how to use a Behat specific API to setup a site for testing. What this includes is setting up a Scenario so that it has the data you need to run a test. This makes it possible not to rely on Seed data for this. This will allow us to run behat tests from remote machines as well as run tests in parallel.
