How can we protect the health of incarcerated people?

How can we protect the health of incarcerated people?

As COVID-19 swept through American prisons and jails in 2020, wardens scrambled to keep prisoners and corrections officers from getting sick. One strategy was to increase solitary confinement. Health experts warn that solitary confinement increases the risk of mental illness and suicide, but the practice continues. Today, about 2 million people are incarcerated in the U.S. In this episode of the Better Off podcast, we'll ask: Is it possible to build a corrections system that accounts for their health and safety?

My Partner's In Prison... Now What?

My Partner's In Prison... Now What?

We all make mistakes, but what happens when one of those mistakes lands you in prison? Melissa Jacob wrote a book about just that, after her seemingly saintly husband Patrick was jailed for two years, and their suburban family life was turned upside down. Cam chats to Melissa and Patrick about how they told their kids and navigated parenting, what it's really like on the inside, and how their relationship endured such a trying time.

Bringing News Inside Prisons with Lawrence Bartley

Bringing News Inside Prisons with Lawrence Bartley
Lawrence Bartley was just 17-years-old when he was charged and sentenced to 27 years to life following a movie theater shoot-out. Gunfire erupted after the group that he was with exchanged insults with another crew of moviegoers. According to the prosecutor, Lawrence’s bullet was the one that hit and killed an innocent 15-year-old boy. Filled with remorse and guilt, Lawrence used his time in prison to reckon with his past, while also finding his place in a rapidly changing society. His incarceration experience ultimately led him to create “News Inside,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning Marshall Project criminal-justice-focused magazine that’s distributed in prisons around the U.S. He joins to discuss how his experience led him to create the publication, changes to the prison system and life as a (now free) suburban dad.

    24. How a Wrongful Conviction Led to 17 years in Prison w/ exoneree Kristine Bunch [Pt 1]

Kristine Bunch was wrongfully convicted and charged with arson and the murder of her 3-year-old son. After facing the trauma of the loss of a loved one she went on to spend 17 years behind bars fighting for her innocence.  If you google Kristine you will discover a wealth of information about her case but I asked Kristine if she would take us on a different journey one that would take us in her footsteps behind prison doors, sharing with us what her life was like, who were the other inmates, as a pregnant woman at the time what medical support did she have available to her, what facilities were available to inmates, work opportunities, and who assisted her both in and out of prison with her fight toward her innocence, which as you can imagine could not have been an easy task being in prison.

Kristine opens her heart to us, kindly shares her story from the connections made, lessons learned, and challenges faced.  There was so much ground to cover as you can imagine 17 years,  that we split this episode into two parts as we only skimmed the surface of this remarkable and touching story.
