35 - Mindset of a Marathoner: Fearless Learning at Any Age

Think you're too old to learn something new? Get ready to challenge that belief as we explore Gill Stapleton's incredible journey in this episode.

Gillian Stapleton, an accomplished CEO and entrepreneur, shattered the age-old belief that you're ever too old to learn something new. Gill's story is a testament to the power of unwavering self-belief and the courage to take on new challenges at any stage of life. She didn't just learn something new; she transformed herself into a marathon runner at the age of 47.

As we unravel Gill's remarkable story, we discover how she transitioned from the corporate world to the world of marathon running. Taking over as the CEO of Direct Selling Australia, a male-dominated industry, Gill faced the daunting task of leading with her unique, female perspective. She shares her insights into breaking free from the conventional ways of doing things and following her passion for entrepreneurs, despite initial failures.

But the heart of Gill's journey lies in her transformation into a marathoner. We explore the mindset she cultivated, one that emphasized setting audacious goals and using self-belief as a driving force. Gillian completed 13 marathons, each with its share of unexpected challenges, teaching her valuable lessons in mental resilience. Her experience at the Boston Marathon in 2013, where she was present during the bombing, is a poignant reminder of the power of the human spirit. Gill's story inspires us to break free from self-imposed limitations and reminds us that we're never too old to learn, grow, and embrace new challenges with unwavering belief in ourselves.

I believe we not only have the write to control our lives, we deserve to create them.

At 30, I had been kicked out of my role and was questioning my life. I had followed everything society told me to do to succeed. But, I failed anyways. That's when I decided if I could fail doing what society said guarantees success, I might as well go do what I truly want and see what happens.

And here I am on a journey to create a life worthy of me and invite others to do it for them, too.

How to Trust Your Gut - Learning to Trust Yourself

How to Trust Your Gut - Learning to Trust Yourself

Instead of relying on others to tell you what you should do & being addicted to external validation, it's best to develop trust in yourself to know what decision is best for you, even if it turns out to not be exactly correct. Here are 5 tips on how to start trusting yourself.

    Show Notes:
I used to have this bad habit of asking so many people for advice to figure out what I should do in life.

And yes, it was definitely a symptom of being a people pleaser, but it was also a lack of confidence and trust in myself. It’s also an offshoot of external validation. And if you want to learn more about letting go of the need for external validation, listen to episode 367 of the podcast because it’s the perfect jumpstart for that.

When you rely on others to validate you, you learn to not trust yourself. You learn to dismiss your own gut feelings and trust whatever other people say because it feels safer, but also feels more reliable coming from people you allow to pass judgment on you & who’s opinions you allow to control you.

Yes, I know, that might have come off a little strong, but let’s not pretend we aren’t leaning in the wrong direction sometimes. Regardless, let’s acknowledge what is true and move forward in doing what is necessary to become our best selves in this moment.

You might think it’s easier to just rely on others to lead you in the right direction & trust in what THEY say you should do. And you’re right, it IS easier, but it also causes issues at the same time. The more you rely on others to decide things for you, the less you’ll rely on yourself to make decisions and the harder it will be to turn that train around. To get back to trusting yourself. To return to a mindset that is ok with taking a chance on your own gut/instinct and accepting the possibility that a mistake or failure might occur.

Learning to trust yourself is integral to making decisions easier, building up your own confidence and even being trusted more by others. When others see the trust you have in yourself, it exudes confidence and belief in what you’re doing. And since you’re not questioning it, they don’t feel the need to question it.

Self-trust also leads to stronger self-understanding. We can better understand the reasons we do certain things and become more honest with ourselves in what we’re struggling with & what needs to happen next to become better. Just as someone else decides to be vulnerable & transparent with you about something, leading to more trust because they are being authentic, it works the same way with ourselves. It’s the self-awareness that starts to question WHY we are fearful and discover what insecurities are getting in our way that will help us grow and start to trust ourselves more.

Here are 5 tips on How to Start Trusting Yourself:

    1. Abide by Your Personal Boundaries.
    2. Validate Your Own Feelings & Needs.
    3. Let Go of What/Who Doesn’t Serve You or Harms You.
    4. Reflect on Times You Have Trusted Yourself.
    5. Learn from Mistakes & Failures.

Leaving a Legacy of Love and Humility with Paul Edginton : EP 6

Leaving a Legacy of Love and Humility with Paul Edginton : EP 6

Leaving a Legacy of Love and Humility with Paul Edginton : EP 6

A builder of legacies through love and humility is what excites Paul Edginton. Right from his childhood, Paul realised that a life of service to somebody else is the true meaning of purpose which he brings to his roles in the not-for-profit and business world.

Paul has enriched the lives of youth on the streets for many, many years and changed the thinking of how not-for-profit businesses operate. As CEO, he’s taken SYC from a $400K members profit to a $30M+ balance sheet.

Taking this knowledge to the role he has now as CEO of Vinomofo, he uses the core value of love to permeate every aspect.

Paul’s quiet but commanding personality shines in this conversation as he delves into some enticing questions around:

    ·      Leadership in the business world today

    ·      The advantage you can teach your kids for the future of business

    ·      His personal life and how that’s entwined with how he operates in the business world

    ·      How love is central to the business landscape

    ·      What’s made him a better CEO

    ·      What in his childhood led to the type of businessman he is today

My key takeaways from this conversation with Paul are:

    ·      Refuse & Decide – I refuse to accept that and I decide to do something differently

    ·      Failure is to be looked at as school fees – some are expensive

    ·      “Love” makes corporates uncomfortable

A quote from the conversation that stuck with me:

“If you can do it, then do it! If you don’t know how, I’ll show you. If you can but won’t, then go away!”

    Great books Paul recommends:

Of Mice & Men by John Steinbeck

Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson
