    The Punisher (2004)

The Punisher has had a number of false starts in adaptations and in this episode, we discuss the 2004 attempt starring Tom Jane and John Travolta. Anthony Desiato of the Digging For Kryptonite podcast returns to the show to talk about a character quite different from his usual fare and there's a lot of good to be found in this film, but also plenty to criticize.

Episode 83: Something in the Dirt & Emancipation (w/ Guest Host Rachel Ho)

Episode 83: Something in the Dirt & Emancipation (w/ Guest Host Rachel Ho)

Greetings, programs, and welcome to a very special episode of the show.  This week (and next!) Simon is on holiday, so Matthew will be joined once again by our friend Rachel Ho of Exclaim.ca, ThatShelf.com, POV Magazine, and The Globe and Mail!

We're diving into an indie darling and a big, oscar-bait action spectacle this week.  First, Benson & Moorhead's Something in the Dirt, which is finally in release after premiering all the way back at Sundance at the beginning of 2022.  Then we move on to Emancipation, Will Smith's first big release since "the slap".  One of these is quite good, and the other not so much.  Listen to find out which!

    Episode 303: I Don’t Recall…Memory

Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy look at eight movies this week including a couple festival titles, some streaming and some new titles in theaters. Steve looks at people trying to put a cult behind them (The Aviary) and a gay romance during Communist Russia (Firebird). Erik looks at a documentary about an additional horror of the Michigan water crisis (Flint: Who Can You Trust?) and Barry Levinson’s film about Holocaust-era boxer Harry Haft (The Survivor). Then both of them see if there’s anything new about an age-old mystery (The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes). A young Finnish girl see what manifests out of the giant egg she found (Hatching). Jim Broadbent stars in the true story of an art theft (The Duke) and Liam Neeson continues his decline below action movie mediocrity – and then some (Memory).

    The Program

    The Program

Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie Talk Debra Granik's LEAVE NO TRACE
Cinema Royale is joined by Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie to talk about LEAVE NO TRACE, the first film by Debra Granik since 2010's WINTER'S BONE. The film, which already has McKenzie being compared to Jennifer Lawrence, centers on a war veteran suffering from PTSD, and his daughter who have been living off the grid in the forests of Portland. When they are discovered by the authorities, it forces them to reintegrate into a society that is unfamiliar.

Toby is a divorced father who's trying to make a better life for his son. His brother Tanner is an ex-convict with a short temper and a loose trigger finger. Together, they plan a series of heists against the bank that's about to foreclose on their family ranch. Standing in their way is Marcus, a Texas Ranger who's only weeks away from retirement. As the siblings plot their final robbery, they must also prepare for a showdown with a crafty lawman who's not ready to ride off into the sunset.
