Fraudsters Unveiled: Inside the Minds of Intentional, Righteous, and Accidental Perpetrators | Kelly Richmond-Pope

Fraudsters Unveiled: Inside the Minds of Intentional, Righteous, and Accidental Perpetrators | Kelly Richmond-Pope

Today, James welcomes Kelly Richmond-Pope, a forensic accountant and professor at DePaul University, to discuss her new book Fool Me Once: Scams, Stories, and Secrets from the Trillion-Dollar Fraud Industry.

The book explores the world of financial fraud and provides insights into how fraudsters operate, the damage they cause, and the techniques used to catch them. James and Kelly dive into some examples from the book to examine the three types of financial fraudsters: Intentional Perpetrators, Righteous Perpetrators, and Accidental Perpetrators.

Intentional Perpetrators are those who knowingly commit fraud for personal gain. Kelly shares some fascinating stories about individuals who engaged in elaborate schemes to defraud others, including the city comptroller of Dixon, IL (population: 16,000) who embezzled over $53.7m from the town's coffers.

Righteous Perpetrators, on the other hand, believe that they are acting in the best interest of others when they commit fraud. Kelly provides examples of individuals who embezzled funds from their companies to support their personal causes, such as a woman who stole money from her slumlord boss to benefit her community.

Lastly, Accidental Perpetrators are those who unknowingly commit fraud. Kelly discusses cases where people unintentionally misrepresent their financial statements or fail to report income accurately, resulting in unintentional fraud.

Throughout the episode, James and Kelly also explore some of the broader issues surrounding financial fraud, and the importance of education in preventing fraud.  Don't miss this captivating episode if you're curious about the fascinating world of finance, fraud, and forensics.

Comparing Sam Bankman-Fried, Native Digital, and Bernie Madoff, Native Analog | Lochhead on Different

Comparing Sam Bankman-Fried, Native Digital, and Bernie Madoff, Native Analog | Lochhead on Different

    The Big Themes:

    • Similarities between Madoff and SBF: Both men "wrapped themselves" in celebrity, fancy parties, and politics. They were able to pull off the deception they created by being good "talkers" and schmoozers.
    • Differences between Madoff and SBF: Where Madoff admitted his wrongdoing virtually immediately, SBF has been spinning a story of incompetence rather than crime. Christopher makes connections between this behavior to SBF's identity as a Native Digital.
    • Is the end of FTX also the end of crypto? Christopher says no way. This type of scandal will probably help to move regulation of crypto in the right direction, and the market will calm down eventually. Native Digitals don't believe in "analog money," and the promise of crypto remains.

The Big Quote: "What we have here is a classic situation where when something's new, when something is generally not well understood, and when something's generally not regulated, you're going to end up here. So I think at the end of the day, the crypto world will be stronger for this because we'll get some of the regulation that we have that makes some of these things hard, although Madoff proved you can get away with bad shit in the legacy world very easily... But I think it's a mistake to say this is the end of crypto."

Getting Schooled on Your Resume, with Chris Harper, co-founder of ZippedScript

Chris Harper, co-founder of ZippedScript, stops by to talk about the number of people who lie on their resumes and shares his company's approach to flipping the script on education verification.  ZippedScript offers global degree verification (in the U.S. and for any country in the world) instantly using new technology that connects directly to an institution’s database with 100% accuracy. Chris says this is only the beginning as they have plans to expand into other areas on the resume where people are even more likely to misrepresent the truth. So, if you didn't go to Harvard or didn't get that Master's Degree in Political Science, it's time to either update your resume or get to work on those applications.

    Billionaires Who Lost Everything

    Billionaires Who Lost Everything

According to Forbes Magazine there are 2,755 billionaires in the world today.  The top five industries where they made their money are Finance, Technology, Manufacturing, Retail and Healthcare. It is rare to become a billionaire, but even more unusual to reach that level and then lose everything, but it is not unheard of.

Today we’ll look at ten one-time billionaires who later went bankrupt, and one whose net worth fell from eight billion dollars to two million dollars.

Some of the people on this list lost their money through unfortunate investments, some through engaging in criminal activity. One gained her billions through divorce and then squandered it all, and one just gave it all away.

If there was ever an episode that lived up to the idea of this show - nothing in particular - this is that episode. My experience with the COVID vaccine, cars with bad ass names, the masters tournament and why I love golf as much as I do, why having me on your side is probably the kiss of death, how my movie watching habits affected my Instagram feed, recent police brutality, earthquakes and other natural disasters, Bernie Madoff, sign language interpreters, and how a Chinese woman got revenge on a douchebag who sent her harassing texts. Florida Sports Man joined me on today's podcast and keeps hyping K2.   I am a fan of Pitts but Trask to me is going to be an NFL backup.
I don't see Lefty as a top ten golfer all-time.  He's had a great career but if you're not first you're last.  And we don't give effort trophies in the game of life.
Aaron Judge has two home runs for Yanks today but Gleyber Torres is not going to cut it at shortstop this season for the Yankees.   Clint Frazier is already out as Yanks starting LF no matter what the team says.   Send him to a team that will play him every day.  PLEASE.
MNF offered a job to Charles Barkley.  He turned it down.  He would have been entertaining.
