Episode 154: Our favorite movies of 2021/'Belle' (2022)

Episode 154: Our favorite movies of 2021/'Belle' (2022)

Regina returns to the show to talk about her favorite movies from 2021. Since she has seen almost all of the movie we have covered, she was able to slide right on it. Little did we know she would pick a movie that was on someone's least favorite list last week. We also talk about the anime Belle. The film was a huge hit on the festival circuit and in its native Japan. But the real question is, did WE like it?

We start the show with a talk about A24 and how some people are willing to give them a pass. This leads to a conversation about The Witch before a talk about the newest trailer from A24. From director Ti West, X is about an adult film crew who get in for more than they bargained for. We talk about West's previous works, the look of the film and whether the trailer reveals too much.

Inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Belle is the story of an shy high schooler named Suzu. When she enters the virtual world U, she becomes a talented idol known as Belle. We compare the anime to the source material, ruminate about love, and question the film's dark twist.

We are finally ready to put 2021 to close with a talk about some of our favorite movies from last year. Some of the picks are expected, some of them you can guess, but one of them was mentioned on last week's show about least favorite movies of 2021. We also discuss grown up teen sex comedies and talk about how twist endings are overrated.

    The Best Films of 2021

    The Best Films of 2021
2021. Another year down, COVID is still raging, and things are looking pretty grim for movie theaters out there. The pandemic has transformed the cinematic landscape into a tempest of uncertainty, with only the most gargantuan of tentpoles being sure things at the box office. But just because profitability is scarce doesn’t mean movies are dead. Just to name a few gems, this year saw lush Arthurian legend come to life, a new freewheeling Paul Thomas Anderson flick, Ridley Scott in his element, and fresh bloodcurdling horrors. Tune in and follow along as Jeff, Derek, and Amir count down their lists.

Episode 123: Our favorites from the first half of 2021/Lyle

Episode 123: Our favorites from the first half of 2021/Lyle

As Blake put it last week, we have been pretty luck here. It was a little hard to come up with the worst movies of the year. It took no time at all to think of the best. This week, we talk about the movies we enjoyed most during the first half of 2021. We also talk about queer horror movie Lyle.

Stephen King has had so much of his work adapted that he is bound to have a few bad ones. The original Pet Semetary is one of King's most beloved works. The 2019 remake? Not so much. Still, it is getting a follow up. Are we interested? Plus, we revisit (?) Disappointment Blvd.

Last week, we talked about the real stinkers the first half of the year presented us. On this episode, we discuss the stuff we loved the most. Powerful endings, having your patience tested, and kangaroo westerns are just some of the things we get into.

June is Pride Month and we wanted to review a queer horror movie that may have flown under the radar. But is that a good thing? We debate the importance of having closure, how an ending can ruin a movie, and how much we hate Michael Che.
