143 - Bible Translations: Why so many?

143 - Bible Translations: Why so many?

The Bible has been translated into different languages throughout history... but how did we end up with many different English translations and how do we know which one to read?

In this episode, we describe the different English Bible translations, as well as discuss how Providence chose the ESV Bible to preach from each Sunday and which translations would be helpful for personal study.

Outlaw Interview: Lutheran Bible Translators: Full Interrogation

Outlaw Interview: Lutheran Bible Translators: Full Interrogation

You didn't ask for it - but here it is:  an interview with a real live member of the board of lutheran Bible translators Canada. Let's find out exactly how far this distribution of the Word of God is willing to go... and who's up for the challenge... and how? With an In-law who just might be an Outlaw in her own heart: Pauline Huth (My Mother in-law).
Sure, it looks good on paper - but let's see how this has reached people in Africa. And how the work of William Tyndale and Martin Luther has carried on throughout the centuries.

You Asked For It: Part 1

You Asked For It: Part 1

Do you have questions about faith? That’s ok! Questions help us learn and grow. Jesus welcomed and answered questions. In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally answers part 1 of questions that were submitted by the VFC church family.

If Adam and Eve were the first people, where did Cain’s wife come from? Genesis 4:17

If Jesus died on Friday and wasn’t there on Sunday morning, how was He died for 3 days? Matthew 12:40

How can I share about my faith when I have such a bad past, filled with guilt and shame? Doesn’t it make me look hypocritical to people that knew me before?

    1 John 1:7-9

What did Jesus mean when he said you will do even greater things than me? John 14:12

Why do some versions of the Bible leave out certain scriptures? Should we steer clear of those versions? (Formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence, Byzantine and Alexandrian manuscripts)

Is it ok for Christians to drink a glass of wine for the sole purpose of relaxing? Ephesians 5:18.  A better question is “Should I drink?”

Is there an actual hell that burns and tortures people for all eternity?

    Eternal conscious torture:

Matthew 25:46, Mark 9:48, Revelation 14:11 Conditional immortality (annihilationism):

    Revelation 20:14, John 3:16, Matthew 10:28

What does it mean to “take your thoughts captive”? 2 Corinthians 10:5, Romans 12:2

What are the limitations on sexual activity within marriage? One man one woman, married, consensual. 1 Corinthians 7:2-5

When we die, do we go straight to Heaven, or do we have a waiting period? What’s the process when we die? 2 Corinthians 5:8

A question for you: Will you trust God with your questions?

Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #06 Chapter 04 Verse 21 – Verse 41

Conservative Friends Bible Study of Mark #06 Chapter 04 Verse 21 – Verse 41

Henry begins this session with a review of the parable of the Sower and the meaning of “The Word”.   He then goes on with the parable of the Lamp and explores the puzzle of “more will be given” and “more will be taken away”.   The next parable studied is the seed growing into a plant.  This opens into Christian growth and what it means to become "perfect".  The final parable of this session is of the Mustard Seed.   Henry then discusses the best translations of the New Testament and their historical implications.  In this context, translating the word “servant” or “slave” is considered.  The session concludes with the miracle of the calming of the storm and the multiple meanings of the word “faith”.

    Understanding Bible Translations

    Understanding Bible Translations

The Bible wasn't originally written in English, and so the versions that we read are translations from the original languages. But how did we get them, and how do we know which one to pick? Why do some churches still use the old King James, and why do others preach from the Message? Is that good or bad? Join Scott and Jo as they discuss the process and difficulties of translating literature from one language to another, and how much more difficult it is with the Word of God! They also take a look at some of the more well known Bible versions and translations, discussing what they should bring in our faith journey.: the NIV, ESV, NJKV, Message & Passion versions.
