Ep. 162: Covers From Beyond!!! - The 90s
This week is all about bands playing other bands' songs… that are completely killer and whatever… Whether they are playing it straight note-for-note, or whether they are re-interpreting it; bands love to pay tribute to great songs that they love! In this episode, we showcase the diversity of how a band can take a 90s classic hit and make it their own.
What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. From industrial-goth bands adding bleeps and buzzes to classic 90s grunge standards, to punk bands rockin’ out gangsta rap… we got ya covered!
Songs this week include:
- The L.I.F.E. Project – “Symphony Of Destruction (Megadeth)” from Big F.O.U.R. EP(2022)
- Howling Giant – “Rooster (Alice In Chains)” from Dirt (Redux) (2020)
- George Lynch & Jeff Pilson – “One Of Us (Joan Osborn)” from Heavy Hitters (2020)
- Sigue Sigue Sputnik – “Bullet With Butterfly Wings (Smashing Pumpkins)” from A Gothic-Industrial Tribute To The Smashing Pumpkins (2007)
- Mystic Prophecy – “Are You Gonna Go My Way (Lenny Kravitz)” from Monuments Uncovered (2018)
- Small Town Titans – “Sex And Candy (Marcy Playground)” from The Ride (2020)
- Cut Down Clay – “California Love (2Pac)” from Hip Hop Goes Punk (2012)
- Copeland – “Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)” from Punk Goes 90s (2006)

Theory's Cash-In Gone Wrong
On this episode, Dave LaGreca and Bully Ray breakdown the kind of Raw that left a lot of fans talking by covering Austin Theory attempting to cash-in his Money in the Bank briefcase on... United States Champion Set Rollins? Interesting. Plus, NWA President Billy Corgan drops by for a newsworthy interview.
Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan and "Snake" Sabo from Skid Row
Lots covered in a short amount of time on this episode of Talkin' Rock.
The Smashing Pumpkins are on tour with Janes Addiction. Billy talks about what it's like to be back out and playing in front of the fans again. We talk about the upcoming three album, three rock opera ATUM records. He explains the process and vision of that project. Plus, a little wrestling talk to round it out.
The new Skid Row album drops on October 14th, so Snake was making the rounds and gave me a few minutes to talk about The Gang's All Here. I also enlisted some "fan" questions from a guy named Rachel Bolan, Rob Hammersmith and a couple other guys, Scott Ian and Frank Bello....wink, wink.
Enjoy!

We also took a nostalgia trip into a recent reminder that at one point in time “Big Johnson” t-shirts were a thing… We then go into a segment where we listen to some really rad isolated vocal tracks from Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Chris Martin of Coldplay, and more. Lastly, we also do some new and always cringe missed connections. Let’s go!

Episode 23 - GRUNGE MONTH 2 | Stone Temple Pilots vs Smashing Pumpkins
Grunge Month is back so Jason & Imran can dissect albums that created the soundtrack to millions of grunge fans that weren't part of the Big 4. Instead, they turn their attention to Stone Temple Pilots debut album Core and the fuzzy second album of The Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream.
And since Jason and Imran both really enjoyed having Hannah Pratt, member of the Moshpit on SYN team on the previous battle, they invited her back on the 'Standoff to help explore more musical horizons, and provide a more casual grunge perspective.

Grunge heroes
Itâs a special Take 5, as we mark the 30th anniversary of Nirvana releasing Nevermind. This was the record that brought grunge into the mainstream, it changed the game not just for the Seattle sound, but catapulted it into a worldwide movement. To celebrate this iconic moment, I dug up some of my most treasured conversations from the Take 5 archives, with the people at the centre of the scene.
Youâll hear from Butch Vig, the producer who shaped Nevermind. From Jonathan Poneman, who signed Nirvana and co-founded Sub-Pop; the label at the centre of the scene. Billy Corgan will pop up, whose Smashing Pumpkins were another huge player in the scene. And weâll revisit my chat with Michael Azzerad, who penned a bestselling biography of Nirvana and also an iconic capture of the late '80s and early '90s indie scene in America, with Our Band Could Be Your Life. Nirvanaâs connection to Australia is significant too, and photographer Sophie Howarth will bring it close to home with her memories of hanging with the band and seeing them play on their only Australian tour.
Itâs a wild ride, and I feel so privileged to have shared this space and these stories. So don the flanny, pull on the cords, let your dirty hair down, and revisit one of musicâs most loved eraâs.
