Ep 107: Managing Birth Expectations: Bridging the Gap

In today’s episode, Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon discuss managing expectations as it pertains to birth (and beyond). As a doula and a prenatal chiropractor, we are intimately involved in helping women navigate not only the physical side of birth, but the emotional aspect too. In this episode, they cover:

    • Diving deeper into how you were informed about childbirth.
    • How to prepare for childbirth in a meaningful and effective way.
    • How to navigate the birthing process and the importance of “being the bamboo”.
    • How the gap between our expectations and reality can lead to guilt and shame about our birth and how to reduce the gap.
    • How your worth is not dependent upon how you give birth.

Ep 102: Newborn Terms to be Familiar With (Part 4/4)

Ep 102: Newborn Terms to be Familiar With (Part 4/4)

What started as one episode about perinatal vocabulary, quickly escalated into a 4 part series, but we’re here for it!  In this episode, we discuss newborn terms that aren’t part of your everyday vernacular, but you will hear after your baby arrives.  And just like with the postpartum terms, it’s important to look over these terms during pregnancy (because some of these procedures could be included in your birth plan!).  And because the immediate postpartum can be overwhelming, it’s a good idea to have some knowledge of these terms before baby arrives.

    We talk about:

    • The golden hour
    • Meconium
    • Jaundice
    • Newborn metabolic tests
    • Placenta
    • Fundal massage
    • Hemorrhage
    • APGAR
    • Delayed Cord Clamping
    • Newborn procedures
    • Vernix
    • and more!

Ep 101: Postpartum Terms to be Familiar with (Part 3/4)

In part 3 of this birth vocabulary series, we’re highlighting some postpartum terms to know.  This is a good list to look at during pregnancy, to familiarize yourself with some of the vernacular that you might not use every day.

We focus on 3 main topic areas: defining postpartum, breastfeeding terms, and postpartum mental health terms.  Of course this list is not exhaustive, but it’s a great start to look at during your pregnancy for a more informed postpartum.

Ep 99: Birth Terms to be Familiar with (Part 2/4)

In part 2 of our perinatal vocabulary series, we’re focusing on terms you might hear as you get closer to birth.  And although these might be birth terms, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with them during your pregnancy as well.  This just helps you be better prepared and to communicate effectively with your birth team.  Definitely listen to part 1 which gives some great organ and organ system definitions, and we’ll build on those definitions as we discuss things like:

    Rupture of membranes

    Prodromal labor

    Braxton-Hicks contractions

    Episiotomy

    Oxytocin

    Failure to progress

Ep 95: How the Birthing Process can Impact Infant Feeding

Ep 95: How the Birthing Process can Impact Infant Feeding

In this episode Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael discuss the impact of birth trauma and stress on infant feeding (nursing and bottle feeding).  There’s lots to unpack in this episode:

    • What baby’s body goes through during the birth process
    • What is “birth trauma”
    • How normally physiological birth carries a certain amount of stress and strain
    • Interventions that can cause more birth trauma
    • Other events that can cause birth trauma
    • How birth impacts the nervous system of baby
    • What does birth stress and nervous system dysfunction in the baby look like (specifically for feeding issues)
    • How chiropractic care can help and what a proper and thorough nervous system assessment for baby looks like
    • Other providers who can help

    Ep 90: Holding Two Truths

    Ep 90: Holding Two Truths

It helps for us to develop our own inner capacity to hold the things that make us nervous and uncomfortable. It helps for us to prepare our internal ground, so that birth may land upon a nervous system that will not default to fighting, fleeing, or freezing in response to the inevitably strong sensations and monumental transformation.”

In this episode Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon find inspiration from the Pathways to Family Wellness article “Birth Pause” encouraging us to “meet each wave of transformation with grounded flexibility”.  There’s  empowerment in being able to hold two truths at once even though they may seem to be opposing truths.  And birth can definitely be a situation where seemingly opposing truths hold their respective values.

    Birth can be both:

    • Hard + rewarding
    • Painful + beautiful
    • Exhausting + Blissful
    • Painful + Purposeful
    • Frustrating + Fun

And there can be a resiliency when we learn to hold these truths with a flowing balance as birth unfolds.

    Ep 89: Ultramarathons and Birth

    Ep 89: Ultramarathons and Birth

Can birth be compared to an ultramarthon - sure!  Just ask me, Dr. Shannon.  In today’s episode, doula Rachael and I sit down to discuss the unique way I celebrated a recent milestone birthday……running 40 miles for 40 years.  Now I am an avid runner, and I’ve used big races to celebrate big life events in the past (like graduating from chiropractic school), but Rachael was able to ask me some questions that will have you seeing the similarities between birth and endurance races like you might not have thought before…….the training and preparation leading up to the race, the pre-race jitters, getting to race day and everything goes awry, pushing through the pain, the mental games we play during races, finally reaching the finish line, and the post-race recovery……

We think you’ll be entertained and surprised at some ultramarathon coping mechanisms I used, and maybe you’ll even learn some techniques for any upcoming endurance events you might have.

Ep 86: Important Things to Consider When Choosing Your Care Provider

Ep 86: Important Things to Consider When Choosing Your Care Provider

How you feel about your birthing experience is important, and a big part of how you feel about your birth relates to how you feel about your care provider.  In this episode, we’re discussing some ways to reverse engineer the thought process by beginning with the desired end result and working backward toward choosing a care provider.  The process involves tapping into your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and intuition, as well as learning about the different places to birth, and ultimately figuring out if you are in true alignment with whomever you choose as a care provider. Ep 83: Chiropractic Prenatal Exam Questions

Ep 83: Chiropractic Prenatal Exam Questions

Just as your OB or midwife, doula, pelvic floor PT or other birth support team members will ask questions in their exams, the questions they ask serve a specific purpose and role.  In today’s episode, Dr. Shannon outlines some of the questions she asks during her prenatal chiropractic exam.  Now, not all chiropractors are going to ask the same questions, in the same order or same manner, and not all chiropractors practice the same techniques, but having some insight into the types of questions asked during the exam, and the why behind them can give insight into what to expect with care.  She goes over 7 main questions that she asks all prenatal patients, and although those questions and the answers provided can lead to more questions, this a good starting point for understanding chiropractic care.  Then she discusses several other questions she asks all patients during their exam.  What does your sports history and job duties, daily tasks, and diet have to do with your prenatal chiropractic care…….a lot!

Ep 82: Hot Take: Birth Doulas are only for Unmedicated Birth

Ep 82: Hot Take: Birth Doulas are only for Unmedicated Birth

There are many different kinds of doulas who provide a wide range of support and services. A common misconception is that birth doulas are only for those who desire an unmedicated birth. In this episode, Doula Rachael breaks down the many reasons birth doulas can support all types of birthing people and birthing preferences.  You may agree or disagree but I hope you find this episode helpful in understanding how doulas can provide meaningful and effective pregnancy, birth, and postpartum support.
