Ep 80: Flipping the Script on Baby Gift Registries with Owner and Founder of BeHerVillage Kaitlin McGreyes

Kaitlin McGreyes is the founder of BeHerVillage. She started working as a birth doula in 2014 and quickly became passionate about creating access to maternal care for all. She has supported hundreds of families through their parenthood journeys, founded a doula team, ran a doula mentorship program, has lobbied on behalf of birthing people, and is committed to helping birth workers break into the retail baby gift industry.

BeHerVilalge is helping families get the funds they need to pay for support they deserve:

    • Doulas
    • Childbirth Education
    • Pelvic Floor Health
    • Lactation Consultants
    • Mental Health Support
    • Chiropractic Care
    • And more!

In this episode, Dr Shannon and Doula Rachael share a passion-filled, forward thinking, and vulnerable conversation about we, as birth workers, can meaningfully and effectively provide the type of support new parents need in order to feel their best and be able to take care of their family in a way that leaves them feeling lifted up instead of overwhelmed. This conversation was truly magical and left us feeling inspired and on fire to spread the word about BeHerVillage and how they are flipping the script on gift registries and why this is so important!

Ep 78: Due Dates and the Holidays

If you are pregnant and due around the holidays, this episode is for you. When it comes to navigating the end of pregnancy, there are several mixed feelings and emotions and likely some degree of discomfort and eagerness to meet your baby and for the pregnancy to be over.  Every path is unique for each birthing person. What works for one person may not work for you and what works for you may not work for someone else. The goal is for you to feel as confident and prepared for this time of pregnancy and that you’ve had conversations withs with your provider leading up to your birth to fully understand how they support letting labor begin on its own and this includes going beyond your due date and learning about medical and non-medical reasons a provider may recommend an induction.

Ep. 76 Five Benefits of Labor Doula Support

Ep. 76 Five Benefits of Labor Doula Support

There are many benefits to having a birth doula as part of your birth support team.  Some of these benefits are well-known and some may be new to you. The goal is for doula care to become the norm and to achieve teamwork between all care providers. Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon discusses the many benefits to having birth doula support during pregnancy, labor, birth, and beyond. In this episode, you will hear about how doulas provide:

    1. Informational support
    2. Physical support
    3. Emotional support
    4. Support for the partner
    5. Teaching advocacy (to decrease fear and instill confidence)

Having this type of support and with a doula present increases:

    1. The likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth
    2. Satisfaction with the birth experience (for both the birther and their partner)
    3. Rates of breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum
    4. The birther’s self-esteem.

Having a doula present, decreases the likelihood of:

    1. Utilizing medicinal pain relief, including an epidural
    2. Labor induction and augmentation with synthetic oxytocin
    3. C-section birth
    4. Vacuum or forceps assisted birth

Ep 73: Five Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Ep 73: Five Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care

Prenatal chiropractic care has some well”ish”-known benefits (of course Dr. Shannon thinks more people could know about the benefits) but she has been documenting some of those lesser-known ones for a bit too and has compiled a list of commonalities.  You might be familiar with pregnant women seeking chiropractic care for aches and pains such as sciatica, low back pain, and pelvic pain.  You might also be familiar with women seeking chiropractic care for overall prenatal wellness and to balance the pelvis and sacrum to assist with optimal fetal positioning.  But have you heard of pregnant women talking about better sleep and better post-partum recovery because they got adjusted?  And what about women having a history of pre-term labor, but after getting adjusted, they’ve been able to go full-term?  Oh and be sure to listen to the full episode because there are some additional benefits we go over.

No matter the type of birth you have, your newborn can benefit from seeing a trained chiropractor. In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael help walk you through how the pregnancy and birth process (vaginal or cesarean) can cause subluxations in the baby’s spine which can impact how their tiny systems function and ultimately impacts how they engage with the outside world.  This episode will dive deep on the following topics:

    • Our personal experiences with prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care
    • How subluxations occur during pregnancy and the birth process
    • Difference in “normal” newborn behavior and signs of distress
    • Impact on nursing, infant feeding, digestion, sleep, and development in the first year of life
    • What is involved in a pediatric newborn exam
    • Common issues Dr. Shannon sees in her office for 0-6 month olds and 6-12 month olds
    • Breaking down misconceptions surrounding pediatric chiropractic adjustments

It is important to seek care from a trained pediatric chiropractor.  Care plans and length of time to see results will vary for each patient based on medical history and individual needs and abilities. You can learn more and find a trained professional at ICPA4Kids.com.

Ep 68: Dr. Shannon's 5 Favorite Pregnancy Tips

Ep 68: Dr. Shannon's 5 Favorite Pregnancy Tips

In my years of working with prenatal patients in the office, I have found that there are 5 main items or principles that I end up discussing with them throughout their care, no matter their complaint or reason for coming to the office.  In the age of information overload, I try to keep it simplified by giving families these 5 things they can do.

Now these activities or items I go over don’t necessarily replace chiropractic adjustments, but when 90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain comes from spinal motion, these 5 things to consider can impact nervous system function in a positive way.

In this episode, I go over 3 exercises and motions to do daily (if possible), ways to improve sleep, and a key area to relieve tension not only during pregnancy, but also during labor.

Ep 64: You're Not Allowed to Not Allow Me - Pathways Article Review

Ep 64: You're Not Allowed to Not Allow Me - Pathways Article Review

In today’s episode, Doula Rachael and Dr. Shannon discuss the Pathways to Family Wellness article: “You’re Not Allowed to Not Allow Me.  Reclaiming the rights of mothers during birth.”  Although this is an article from 2015, the topic surrounding certain words that providers use is still relevant.

Our words have power. Words can instill strength or fear and words can give confidence or doubt. The words we think are also powerful.

This article discusses the word “allow” as it pertains to providers communicating to expecting families about “allowing '' certain things such as VBAC’s, eating and drinking during labor, pushing in upright positions, and various other options.

“What woman who has experienced nine months of language like “we can’t let you” and “you’re not allowed” is going to suddenly have the wherewithal to refuse an unnecessary surgery - or to even know that she has the right to do so?”

The article concludes with four simple ways to take back that power, to feel empowered with your birth and birth experience, and to create a birth support team that encourages shared-decision making conversations between the provider and expecting family.

Ep 61: Finding Your Breath: 5 breathing exercises for pregnancy and postpartum

“We can’t necessarily control everything that happens to us, but we can control our reaction.  We can be response-able with our reaction to life.”  As a society that is chronically stressed, it can impact our posture, our ability to take deep breaths, and ultimately impact our overall health.  Add pregnancy and postpartum to the mix and breathing dysfunctions can be magnified.  In this episode I go over 5 breathing techniques that can impact not only our ability to breathe better, but also impact our nervous system function.

We talk about the parts of the nervous system and do a quick little anatomy overview of the vagus nerve and how it impacts our breath, our digestion, and the sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the nervous system.  These breathing exercises aren’t just for pregnancy though, and I mention some that are great for kids and families, and I give some alternatives to accommodate for the growing belly.

In this episode, Doula Rachael breaks down the important role that pain serves during labor and birth and what you can do to help flip the script on perception of pain when preparing for labor. Pulling back this veil of fear surrounding pain can help you feel more confident and prepared as you navigate the sometimes unpredictable path to giving birth. Ep 59: Choosing a Care Provider For Your Birth (Rebroadcast)

Ep 59: Choosing a Care Provider For Your Birth (Rebroadcast)
How you feel about your birthing experience is important, and a big part of how you feel about your birth relates to how you feel about your care provider.  In this episode, we’re discussing some ways to reverse engineer the thought process by beginning with the desired end result and working backward toward choosing a care provider.  The process involves tapping into your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and intuition, as well as learning about the different places to birth, and ultimately figuring out if you are in true alignment with whomever you choose as a care provider. This episode will share with you the differences between a midwife and an obstetrician as well as the difference between places they support birth. Then we dive into how to choose a care provider including questions to ask and red flags to look for.

Ep 58: Eating and Drinking During Labor

Ep 58: Eating and Drinking During Labor

In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael discuss the newest evidence on eating and drinking during labor.  Some hospitals restrict eating and drinking during labor which is not an evidence based practice.  Labor and birth should be treated like a marathon, not a sprint.  Eating and drinking during labor can help to keep the birthing person hydrated and energized during one of the most strenuous, long, and exhausting experiences of their life. In this episode you will learn:

    • Current recommendations
    • Quick facts
    • Why eating and drinking freely and as you please during labor is important
    • What to eat in early labor
    • What to bring to your birth center or hospital birth
    • If birthing at home, what to have on hand for the day of labor

The goal of this episode is for you to learn about your options, learn what is recommended, and to empower you to advocate for yourself during labor and birth so that you have the best chance at having the best birth possible.

Ep 57: Pediatric Chiropractic Care and Cranial Adjustments - Interview with Dr. Martin Rosen

Ep 57: Pediatric Chiropractic Care and Cranial Adjustments - Interview with Dr. Martin Rosen

Dr. Shannon sits down with pediatric chiropractor, author, and instructor, Dr. Martin Rosen to talk about all things pediatric chiropractic care and craniopathy.  In most of our episodes, we’re talking about prenatal care and pregnancy, but if you’ve listened to any of our postpartum episodes, you know we talk about ways to support yourself after birth.  Not only do we discuss continuing under chiropractic care, but the impact the birthing process can have on your baby and what you can do to facilitate their healing as well.
In this episode, we discuss Dr. Rosen’s book about Common vs. Normal when it comes to cranial distortions and pediatric neurological development and lots of other topics including:

    • How birth impacts the infant cranium
    • Why cranial shape is important
    • What is the dura mater, dural tension, cerebrospinal fluid and how all body systems are impacted by birth
    • The importance of the first 2 years of life
    • What are milestones and primitive reflexes (and yes - why crawling is important!)
    • Specific pediatric conditions we’ve both worked with: torticollis, tongue tie, plagiocephaly
    • Why tummy time is important
    • When to seek outside help
    • What pediatric chiropractic and cranial adjustments look like

Ep 55: Tips for Optimal Fetal Positioning

Ep 55: Tips for Optimal Fetal Positioning

What is optimal fetal positioning and why is it important?  Fetal positioning refers to how your baby is positioned in the womb, and in this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael talk about several aspects of fetal position including:

    • What does LOA mean and why is that optimal?
    • What is fetal malposition and examples of those positions.
    • What these positions mean when it comes to labor and birth.
    • Are there things that you can do to encourage optimal fetal positioning?

Don’t forget to check out all of the resources mentioned in this episode, and as always, be sure to discuss any of the topics from this episode with your healthcare provider.

Ep 54 Navigating the Final Weeks of Pregnancy

Ep 54 Navigating the Final Weeks of Pregnancy

In order to feel more at ease, confident, and comfortable in the final weeks of pregnancy, it takes significant and intentional effort and preparation during pregnancy. In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael share tips for preparing your mind, body, and heart for navigating the final weeks of pregnancy so that labor can begin and unfold as it should and you can feel less stress, fear, and doubt during this time.

They share information about due dates and how you can focus on the due month instead of the due date. They also talk about ways you can prepare your body for labor, signs of labor, what to do if you experience prodromal labor, benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy and early labor, and how to prepare your mind and heart for those final weeks of pregnancy.

There is no 1-way to get labor started so we focus on all the other ways you can prepare yourself for the final weeks of pregnancy so that you can be more comfortable and feel confident in yourself, your baby, and the normal process of labor and birth. Approaching labor in this way can help avoid an unnecessary induction which can improve overall outcomes and help you have a more positive birthing experience.

Ep 52: What happens in Vagus: guest interview on the Magic of Mamahood Podcast

Dr. Shannon had the honor of being a guest on the Magic of Mamahood Podcast with Caitlin and Stefany, and we’re so thankful that they shared their episode with us at the Aligned Birth Podcast.  They had some wonderful questions about the importance of posture, how poor posture can affect us over time, ways to combat posture issues, chiropractic care during pregnancy and what that looks like, chiropractic care and allergies, pediatric chiropractic care, and more!  You definitely want to listen to the end for my top 3 takeaways about the importance of chiropractic care.  And be sure to check out Cailtin and Stefany’s podcast.  Motherhood takes a village, and their fitness, nutrition, and general women’s wellness knowledge that they share is an important part of our motherhood tribe.
