Ep 51: How to Support Someone Who Just Gave Birth

In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael discuss tips for ways to best support someone who just gave birth. This is great for the partner or spouse as well as for close family and friends…anyone providing support to a new mother. The goal is to provide practical and actionable tips for supporting new moms in a meaningful and beneficial way.  Family and friends usually have good intentions with wanting to help but they may not know exactly what the birthing person needs. As the birthing person, it is helpful if you can know ways to ask for help and if you are the non-birthing person, pick a few of these tips that align with you and do those things. With authentic and meaningful support, new mothers have a greater chance to focus on rest, healing, nourishing herself and her baby.  This kind of support has the potential to provide benefits for months and even years to come. The inspiration for this episode came from Kier Gains, a licensed therapist as well as an article on Motherly.com.

Ep 49: Common Pregnancy Discomforts + Remedies

Ep 49: Common Pregnancy Discomforts + Remedies

Let’s face it, sometimes pregnancy brings about pain, discomfort.  In this episode, we discuss some common discomforts experienced during pregnancy as well as the remedies that we have learned about that can help provide relief.  We talk about nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, exhaustion, fatigue, increased headaches, increased urination, incontinence, general pelvic pain and lightning crotch.  We are not obstetricians or midwives, the information shared in this episode is our opinion and based on our personal and professional experience as a chiropractor and a birth doula/childbirth educator.  Always consult your care provider if you have questions or concerns and before taking any supplements or medications.  Just because these are common pregnancy discomforts, it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through them or that there’s nothing to do about it.  Hopefully this episode gives you some tips to try, thoughts and conversations to have with your care provider, and hope that you’re not alone in what you’re feeling.

As you prepare for labor and birth, packing the hospital back can be somewhat daunting because “what do you really need”.  And let’s face it, anytime we’re packing for a trip and forget something, it can cause unnecessary stress.  We definitely don’t need extra stress when it comes to giving birth!  This episode shares some helpful tips for packing for the hospital, but this list can also be useful if you are planning a home birth.  We share the reasons it is beneficial to pack your bag in advance so that you have time to gather what you need and want with you at the hospital.  We include things to consider for labor and birth for you and your partner as well as for after the birth for you, your partner, and your new baby.  Preparation is key and our hope is that a few of these things will resonate with you and help you have a satisfying experience.

Ep 47: Empowering Birth Stories with Jessica

Ep 47: Empowering Birth Stories with Jessica

In this episode, Jessica Brock, a patient of Dr. Shannon and one of Doula Rachel’s former client’s, shares her two birth stories. She shares how she prepared for her first birth with lots of research and advocacy and how this helped her navigate her long and exhausting (albeit beautiful and healthy) birth of her first son in 2018.  She then shares how her first birth informed her 2nd birth and the things she chose to do differently for her 2nd birth to her daughter Nora in 2020 amidst a global pandemic.

Jessica shares about switching providers late in pregnancy, PROM (premature rupture of membranes), getting adjusted by Dr. Shannon in early labor, laboring at home until later in labor, and giving birth within 2 hours of arriving at the hospital.  Jessica also talks about her experiences during postpartum with both of her kiddos.

Be sure to listen until the end because she offers some beautiful words of encouragement and advice for those expecting a baby soon.

There are so many nuggets of wisdom from Jessica as she shares her beautiful and empowering experiences of giving birth. She is inspiring, encouraging, honest, and vulnerable. You don’t want to miss this episode!

Ep 46: Role of Chiropractic in Childbirth Education (Pathways Article Review)

In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael dissect an article from one of their favorite magazines, Pathways to Family Wellness.  This article is about the Role of Chiropractic in Childbirth Education and is by Sarah Clark. The article premise is how chiropractic care is an essential part of not just birth, but childbirth education, and how it has the ability to change birth as we know it.  A good question the article brings up is: “How do well-prepared people sometimes end up with a birth very different from the one they planned?” We go over the pros and cons of this article and share our own feedback on this important topic.

You can find the Pathways article here: Role of Chiropractic in Childbirth Education

Ep 42: Dr. Ashley Harper’s Birth Stories (hospital birth to home birth) and the impact of BIRTHFIT

Ep 42: Dr. Ashley Harper’s Birth Stories (hospital birth to home birth) and the impact of BIRTHFIT

“You’ve got to birth where you feel comfortable”  You have to feel safe where you are birthing - where are you going to be able to surrender”

In part 2 of Dr. Ashley’s interview we talk about how she had her first child while in the chiropractic program and began to switch her chiropractic focus from sports to prenatal and pediatric care.  Being in school also impacted how she approached the birth of her first.  And she also discovered BIRTHFIT during that postpartum time.

She shares the birth story of her first and how different it looked compared to her second child!  From a medicated hospital birth first time to a home birth second time around.  And she shares how her postpartum experiences differed drastically.  From running a half marathon in one postpartum time period to embracing rest in the next, she shares how the foundations of BIRTHFIT helped her form a stable base and be more intentional with her movements.  She also talks about how she approaches care with the expecting families she works with which includes

    • lots of patient education
    • defining what true health is
    • the impact of chiropractic care on the nervous system
    • how to encompass a wellness lifestyle ( movement, mental, and nutrition)
    • helping people take ownership of their health
    • And hosting postpartum BIRTHFIT classes.

Be sure to listen to part 1 of her interview to learn more about the foundations of BIRTHFIT

Ep 41 BIRTHFIT Prenatal Chiropractor and Leader Dr. Ashley Harper

Dr. Ashley Harper joins us on the show to talk all about B!RTHF!T.  We’ve mentioned this program on several episodes before, but today, we get to define what exactly BIRTHFIT is with leader/coach and prenatal chiropractor, Dr. Ashley.  She has a wonderful exercise background and she uses that knowledge with her chiropractic training to help expectant parents keep their physical bodies prepared for upcoming birth as well as supporting people postpartum.  Birthfit has an amazing foundation in movement, but how to live an overall wellness lifestyle is a big part of the classes too.
In this episode we talk about:

    • What is BIRTHFIT and what are the foundations (the 9 core values)
    • What does it offer prenatal and postpartum moms (or even non-pregnant people)
    • How are the classes structured (online vs in-person and community)
    • Why is breathwork important (breath is life - and it’s connected to the pelvic floor)
    • How does it help with birth and postpartum
    • How Dr. Ashley found BIRTHFIT during school and the impact it made during her postpartum (more on that in part 2!)

Ep 36 Tips for the Fourth Trimester

Ep 36 Tips for the Fourth Trimester

In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael share a conversation about helpful ways to prepare for and navigate through the fourth trimester with more ease and confidence. The fourth trimester is the 12 weeks after you give birth.

The fourth trimester is a sacred time full of many ups, downs, beautiful and hard moments, time spent getting to know your new baby, time spent getting to know your new self, along with moments of stress and exhaustion, joy and love, physical and emotional recovery, hormone adjustments, and relationship adjustments.  So many things occur in the fourth trimester. Oftentimes, you can feel both extreme joy and sadness within the same day. This ability to hold multiple feelings and emotions at once is part of a healthy fourth trimester.

    • What is the fourth trimester?
    • Why is it important to consider?
    • Things to consider when planning for the postpartum.
    • Chiropractic care for your newborn to help their body adjust to the stressors of birth.
    • Building your post-birth support team.
    • And lots of helpful resources!

Ep 34 Gentle Family-Centered Cesarean Birth

Ep 34 Gentle Family-Centered Cesarean Birth

In this episode, Dr. Shannon and Doula Rachael discuss what it means to have a gentle and family-centered cesarean birth and why it is so important.  Having a gentle and family centered cesarean helps the birthing parents participate and feel more connected with their birth.  You can have an empowering and satisfying birth experience no matter how your birth unfolds.  Having a supportive care provider who practices true informed and shared decision making along with preparing during pregnancy for the possible variations that may occur during the birthing process can help you feel more at ease and confident as you prepare for your upcoming birth.  Toward the end of the episode we give a specific list of things to consider when planning for a gentle and family-centered birth.

In this episode, we will discuss the following:

    • Why is having a family-centered/gentle cesarea important?
    • Reasons you may need a planned cesarean
    • Reasons you may need an unplanned cesarean during labor
    • If you need a cesarean, what can you do to prepare in a meaningful and effective way?
    • Planned cesarean vs emergency cesarean
    • Shared and informed decision making tool - BRAIN acronym
    • What are some things you can advocate for?

Ep. 28 Perinatal Specialist of Competent Heart: Dr. Tina Harris Part 2

Ep. 28 Perinatal Specialist of Competent Heart: Dr. Tina Harris Part 2

This week we continue our interview with Pelvic Floor PT specialist Dr. Tina Harris.  Last episode we explored the specifics of pelvic floor PT, and how Dr. Tina approaches care.  So much of her care is related to her life’s story and journey, and that’s what we go into with this week’s episode.  She has experienced infant loss and pregnancy after loss.  She has dealt with subpar prenatal care and learned to advocate for herself.  And she combines this into what she gives through her organization, Competent Heart Perinatal Specialist. On top of that she is a best-selling author and also the founder of CH Expressions.  As someone who strives to help her clients create their birth support team, we are so thankful that she has dedicated her life’s work to the birthing community.

Ep 27: Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy with Dr. Tina Harris Part 1

Ep 27: Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy with Dr. Tina Harris Part 1

As a doctor of physical therapy, Dr. Tina is looking at her clients as a whole.  She looks at how they are functioning, and she takes it a step further to assess the health and overall function of the pelvic floor.  Now don’t worry if you don’t know what bones, muscles, or ligaments make up the pelvic floor, or if you only think of physical therapy in terms of “post-injury care”, or what breathwork has to do with pelvic floor PT because we talk about ALL of that and more in part 1 of our interview.  Not only does Dr. Tina assess prenatal patients for functional movement patterns and postpartum patients for bladder issues (and more!) but she also adds in expertise as a doula, reiki practitioner and acupressure instructor.  She created her organization, Competent Heart Perinatal Specialist to help the birthing community find their tribe, create their village, and to support and empower themselves.

She’s an author, life-long lover of birth, has dealt with infant loss; she continues to expand her skills to combine her talents and passions for holistic wellness, pelvic health, and childbirth to guide individuals towards healing and alignment of their body, mind, and spirit.

Ep 26 Due Dates and the Holidays

Ep 26 Due Dates and the Holidays

What do the holidays and your due date have to do with each other? The rate of inductions dramatically increases in the days leading up to a major holiday...and the rate of babies actually born on major holidays dramatically drops. This is due to the fact that some care providers want to manage the course of your labor and control whether or not they are working on a holiday.

The goal is to help you learn more about this topic and feel prepared to advocate for yourself during those final weeks of pregnancy.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The importance of learning about due dates
    • How far along we were when our babies were born
    • How due dates are calculated
    • The rate of inductions before major holidays
    • Focusing on your “due month”
    • Who can help support you during this time

Be sure to listen to our other episodes where we talk about building your birth support team and choosing a care provider:

Episode # 3: Building Your Birth Support Team

Episode # 14: Choosing a Care Provider for Your Birth

This podcast was created from a desire to share conversations and interviews about topics from pregnancy and birth to motherhood and the importance of a healthy body and mind through it all.  Our goal is to bring you fun, interesting, and helpful conversations that excite you and make you want to learn more.
