    THE SCOOP
Meet Aramintha, a free spirit in captivity, thanks to the alien invasion. She's being held in a large room inside what used to be a bank. She’s isolated from other humans and disoriented….still halfway in her old reality. In her previous life, she ditched her successful career as a financial analyst to open an internet cafe. Now she's lost everything, including her partner Sage, the love of her life. Worse, she cannot understand her alien keepers. At all. Aramintha fears her extraterrestrial captors as much as she despises them, but at the end of the day, resistance is everything.

    Genesis 75216

    Genesis 75216

Cassandra Wesley was a resident of zip code 75216 over 30 years ago when she and her children escaped her abusive husband, entering the shelter at Genesis. Today, Cassandra returns to both Genesis and zip code 75216 in Dallas to bring domestic violence services to the community she once fled. Hear Cassandra's story of transformation and how that is linked to the next generation of change as we also interview Crislyn Faison and Aysia Lane, the black women filmmakers of #BlackAtSMU. Crislyn - who is Cassandra's great-niece - continues her family's legacy of transformation through filmmaking, while Aysia enriches the conversation through engaging storytelling. Their interwoven stories are rooted in understanding and effecting meaningful change for the next generation. This episode discusses domestic violence, physical violence, racism, and discrimination.

Filmmaker Thato Mwosa on 'Memoirs of a Black Girl' and true stories of Africa

Filmmaker Thato Mwosa on 'Memoirs of a Black Girl' and true stories of Africa

Even though Lesley University MFA in Creative Writing alum Thato Mwosa grew up in Bostwana, her dolls were white and so were most of the faces on her TV. When American shows like "Sister, Sister," "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," and "Martin" began airing in her country, Thato was enthralled. Now, she is using her varied creative interests to celebrate Black and African people, from her award-winning film Memoirs of a Black Girl, to a book on accomplished African women and even an African trivia game.

Learn more about Thato Mwosa and about our low-residency Creative Writing MFA program.

Marco Williams: A Filmmaker’s Role during Social Change

Marco Williams is a documentary filmmaker and professor of film production at Northwestern University. His films—which center around race, injustice, and American history—have received numerous awards, including the Gotham Documentary Achievement Award and the Guggenheim Fellowship. Marco has also been nominated three times for the Sundance Film Festival grand jury prize.

My films are about America; about whom we have been; who we are; who we aspire to be. I have committed myself to creating a record of America by trying to deal with the topics that challenge our sense of who we are and our sense of justice, but more importantly, to make films that will have sustained impact...I try to tell the stories we’d rather not tell. - Marco Williams

How Powerful Decisions Can Change the Course of Your Life (w/ James Bland)

Some decisions have the power to change the course of your life. Creator, showrunner and star of the Emmy winning series Giants, James Bland describes the unshakable pull that led him to create, and ultimately bootstrap, the initial production costs for development of the show.  He explains how his early sacrifices led to unexpected breakthroughs and opportunities that allowed him to leave his full-time job and go all-in on his dream. Making life-changing decisions is not easy. But in taking decisive action towards accomplishing our goals, you are sending a signal to the universe that you are ready to step into your greatness, and James offers his life as an example for all of us to follow.
