The Rise of Black Filmmakers & the Power of Tubi

The Rise of Black Filmmakers & the Power of Tubi

Following several viral moments, Baltimore filmmaker Alvin Gray joins Dear Culture to talk about the ups and downs of creating independent films. His projects "The Rapper Who Got Shot in the Heel" and "The Nurse That Saw the Baby on the Highway" have garnered much attention, but not always the good kind. Gray and Panama Jackson also debate the power of Tubi and discuss the drama that ensued when one of Gray's projects got banned from the streaming platform before it was even released.

    Malachi Moore on 'Get Out'

    Malachi Moore on 'Get Out'

Malachi Moore is a writer, model, former Division 1 football player, and entertainment renaissance man. And when he saw Chris Washington (as played by Daniel Kaluuya in Jordan Peele's GET OUT), he not only related to Chris's plight in the film, but also to the depiction of a Black man who is also a sensitive, anxious artist.

All that, plus some contrasting spooky movie recommendations, on what we'll go ahead and call our Halloween episode of FEELING SEEN!

    Codie & Tommy Oliver

    Codie & Tommy Oliver

Codie and Tommy's love story begins at the Toronto Film festival while she was a working as a camera rep and he was presenting his feature film debut. We're not going to get into the details of who was hitting on who or who Googled who (that's why y'all gotta listen to the interview!) but the two hit it off and from there things moved FAST.

One month after Codie met Tommy, they discussed this idea  to create a place where Black love stories live. That was fall 2013 and they started filming Black Love in fall 2014. They were engaged. They married in 2015, and in this 2016 interview for Black Love Doc they were about to become first time parents!

Listen to not only where they stood at this point in their marriage journey, but in their partnership as entrepreneurs, business partners, and filmmakers.

Man to Man with Steve Harris

Man to Man with Steve Harris

Steve Harris is a multi-hyphenate to the nth degree. He's a producer, an entrepreneur, an Emmy winner, a documentarian, a network executive, and he and David happened to cross paths at his latest project, Sneakertopia. But perhaps just as interesting as all the things that Steve has managed to do and create and work on, are the paths he had to take to get there. From his early days at Howard University, to being a young father and navigating college and parenthood at the same time, to trying to chase a dream and rejection, Steve has experienced it all. Plus how has all of this tied into his own wellness journey and making time and finding balance with doing everything and doing what you need to do for yourself?

Make sure you keep up with what Steve has going on with Sneakertopia by following  @gosneakertopia

Thembi Banks is My New BFF

Thembi Banks is My New BFF

Full disclosure - Codie and Thembi have been friends for a quick minute, but as the two of them are busy busy, it's always good to catch up! So let's get into it. Thembi Banks is a  filmmaker, storyteller, wife, and mama. AND when she and Codie had this conversation she was getting ready to make her feature film directorial debut (after having C-19 shut down the first one). Codie and Thembi got real about just how hard it is to find your footing in the entertainment industry. As it turns out, the feature she was talking about is no longer going forward ( 😔) but the value is still there! Tune in as Thembi and Codie talk about juggling motherhood (shoutout to her little one in the background) and work and all the things that come with doing it all (note: extend yourself some grace). Trust, Thembi will be your New BFF by the end of this convo!

Connect with Thembi over on IG @spoonfulofsass

Make sure you let Codie know who she should have as her next New BFF @codieco
