    The COINTELPRO war

    The COINTELPRO war

In this episode of the Groundings podcast, host Musa Springer talks with Dr. Akinyele Umoja, a scholar, activist, and author, about the notorious COINTELPRO program. This program was led by the FBI and local police departments, and was an all-out war on Black organizers. This episode delves into the history, consequences, and the struggle led by Black organizers to expose the violent program.

Dr. Umoja provides a comprehensive understanding of the COINTELPRO program, its inception, and first-hand account of its impact on Black liberation movements in the US. The episode begins with a discussion about Assata Shakur, a prominent figure within the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, and her experiences with COINTELPRO.

Dr. Umoja shares his insights on the counterintelligence and counterinsurgency tactics used by the FBI to disrupt and neutralize Black nationalist movements, and how these tactics are relevant and still in use today. He also discusses the discovery of the COINTELPRO program and the subsequent congressional hearings that confirmed its existence.

Support for Political Prisoners with Rigo 23, Painter and Activist

Support for Political Prisoners with Rigo 23, Painter and Activist

Today, I’m joined by Rigo 23, a painter, muralist, and activist who has undertaken collaborative art projects with some of America's political prisoners. In our conversation, Rigo expands on the inspiration and process behind two of his works: His recent February 31st Exhibit that includes work with, and inspired by, the Angola 3 and a large-scale statue of Leonard Peltier based on one of Peltier’s self-portraits.Β

Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox, and Robert King, also known as the Angola 3, were subjected to a combined 114 years in closed cell restriction, which is the longest known solitary confinement incarceration in world history. February 31st is an exhibit that invites viewers to explore the work of Rigo 23 that was a collaboration with Wallace, Woodfox, and King, and inspired by the unique worldview that Herman, Albert, and Robert developed during their years of deprivation and inhumane conditions.Β

Rigo also shares the story behind his statue of Leonard Peltier, an Indigenous rights activist who is still serving a prison sentence from when he was wrongfully convicted of murdering two FBI agents in 1975. The statue Rigo created, based on Leonard Peltier’s self-portrait, has traveled around the country, and exemplifies how art can harness support for those unjustly imprisoned.Β

Mumia Abu Jamal and the MOVE Minister of Confrontation, Pam Africa

Mumia Abu Jamal is mostly known to the world as a former black panther, former radio journalist and for the last 41 years as a convicted murderer who had been sentenced to death but now is serving life in prison without parole.Β  What is less known about Mumia Abu Jamal is his long history with MOVE before he shoots Officer Daniel Faulkner on December 9, 1981 and that Mumia's lead publicist "handler" Pam Africa is also the Minister of Confrontation for MOVE.Β  Utilizing an audio cassette exclusivey obtained by the podcast this episode examines the undeniable 40+ year connections between MOVE, Mumia Abu Jamal and murdered ex-MOVE member John Gilbride.Β  Mumia and MOVE are one in the same thing, there is no halfsies or casual relationships that span 45 years like Mumia Abu Jamal aka Wesley Cook. Β  This episode will leave you with questions that the podcast could not get answered after repeatedly reaching out to Mumia and his lawyers/publicists. Β

Before You Go: The Ballot The Bullet The Incarcerated Seniors

Before You Go: The Ballot The Bullet The Incarcerated Seniors

Audiences tune in to Before You GoΒ for first-hand accounts of the lives of our seniors. What about those of a certain age behind bars? Is death-by-incarceration being discussed enough in mainstream conversation? Formerly incarcerated Yusef Jones is currently out on parole after being sentenced to 30 to 60 years in a correctional facility known for its large population of lifers. In discussing the reality of coming into the system as a young man and leaving as a senior, Mr. Jones Β shares rare insight into how to survive behind bars. Education, mentoring Β and hope are first and foremost, according to our guest. Β And for those of us on the outside, if we want change to the enormous inequity when it comes to the justice system we have to show up and vote. As Malcolm X stated, it's "The Ballot or The Bullet."

Episode 132: Uncommon Conversations with Dereca Blackmon Part 2
Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast I have the first of a handful of interviews that came about in a back to the future-esque way. This spring, the Stanford National Black Alumni Association (https://www.stanfordblackalumni.org) biennale summit took place in Washington, D.C. and I organized my spring trip back to the U.S. around reconnecting with my fellow friends and alum and sharing my insights as a Glocal Citizen on a panel entitled, "Africa: Bridging the Diasporic Divide." A propos, my guest, Detroit native, Dereca Blackmon has career-wide experience bridging divides. As Co-Founder and President of the Inclusion Design Group (https://inclusiondesign.com), she is also head trainer and responsible for the creation of the dynamic set of workshops and follow-up activities used by her team. Her experiential training models cut through β€œdiversity fatigue” and allow participants to engage in deep, authentic, and meaningful dialogues. Among her prior positions, she served as the Assistant Vice Provost, Associate Dean and Director of the Diversity and First-Generation Office at Stanford University where she introduced groundbreaking work on authentic engagement, intergroup dialogue, and unconscious bias to over 30,000 students, staff, faculty and alumni. She also taught several courses at Stanford including Intergroup Communication with renowned cultural psychologist Hazel Markus (https://web.stanford.edu/~hazelm/) Reverend Deborah L. Johnson (https://deborahljohnson.org). For over 25 years, Dereca has consulted with a wide variety of corporate, educational, nonprofit, and community-based groups to facilitate β€œuncommon conversations” on issues of race, gender, class, and social justice.
