Some Revolutionary Roots of the Queer Liberation Movement w/ Destiny Clarke of Closeted History

We join Destiny of Closeted History to begin what we anticipate being the first in many collaborations exploring the intersection of the LGBTQ+ movement with other revolutionary struggles.  Through the lens of "pinkwashing," we consider how landmark actions of the LGBTQ+ liberation movement (think Stonewall) have been appropriated to  justify limited gains (think President Obama designating Stonewall a national monument). We pivot to a conversation of the genocide in Palestine and hasbara pinkwashing to create divisions within world bourgeoise liberalism.

Episode 26: Audrey Osler, Part Two

Episode 26: Audrey Osler, Part Two

In Episode 26, Audrey Osler shares her thoughts on the impediments to implementing HRE in the USA. She then explains the importance of recognizing children as citizens and the Convention of the Rights of the Child. Audrey then examines the lack of public dialogue in the US around human rights. Next, she discusses how educating journalists about human rights is critical, and how there is a lack of focus on human rights in dealing with domestic policy issues in the USA. Audrey offers a comparison to Norway and its human rights image, including an analysis of Norwegian exceptionalism with regards to human rights, as compared to the UK. Audrey then describes how education can act as a counter-socializing force and challenge notions of exceptionalism, and the need for international perspective and curriculum to challenge nationalistic education through advancing human rights education (HRE), while sustaining a love for one’s nation and still recognizing one’s common humanity. Next, she shares her sentiments and concerns regarding the rise of authoritarianism, and the importance of examining underlying causes and revisiting definitions of power and democracy. She elaborates on confronting the rise of dictatorial tendencies in political parties, and identifies our fascination with personality and spectacle as problematic. Audrey then discusses how her mother was her most Influential role model in challenging injustice, and how an important recommendation to advancing HRE would be for all governments to abide by their international commitments to human rights norms and treaties.

S3E2 IDK, Ask QK - Black Business Historically, Oh The Trauma.

Impromptu or Right on time? Who's to say? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Let’s talk about the traumatic but oh-so-necessary history of black business and banking. I draw a true picture of where we are in business and enterprise today and what it looks like for our future, IMO. A special guest appearance that will put you in your feels, historical context, and business insight with some business advice for your troubles.

S/o to Mehrsa Baradaran, author of The Color of Money, an amazing book that has been setting me on fire every time I have dived in. Why a non-profit entity is the most complex, but not in the ways you might think.

"Schools are a reflection of the society that created them. Nobody is going to give you the education you need to overthrow them. Nobody is going to teach you your true history, teach you your true heroes, if they know that that knowledge will help set you free."

Copaganda and the Criminal System w/ Olayemi Olurin

Copaganda and the Criminal System w/ Olayemi Olurin

Movement lawyer and political commentator, or “professional loudmouth”, Olayemi Olurin sheds light on what she knows about the American criminal “justice" system - which is a ton. Having come from The Bahamas as a young woman, she had seen plenty of poor Black folks. But she says America has a very different way of treating Black and brown people, which is that there is a focus on breaking down, criminalization and imprisonment, and just maybe there’s a lucrative payoff for it. A report by the ACLU shows that prisoners generate over $11 BILLION of goods and services and are rarely paid anything. She and Laverne talk about bail reform, the shady habit of over-policing and underfunding poor communities, and the way the prison pipeline perpetuates itself. “Our environments are who we become.”

Casualties of War, Casualties of Time

Time.  the most precious thing in the universe ; and it is the heart of this podcast-unevenly.

In this episode I again speak of our group therapy discussions and deal with the war in Ukraine, and how the “victims” of a war touch the victims of sexual abuse.

I read from “Are prisons obsolete?” By Angela Davis.

I was always impressed with her critical thinking and how clear her writing style was in on topic she took on.  I thought about her book while in therapy session.

Episode 132: Uncommon Conversations with Dereca Blackmon Part 2
Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast I have the first of a handful of interviews that came about in a back to the future-esque way. This spring, the Stanford National Black Alumni Association (https://www.stanfordblackalumni.org) biennale summit took place in Washington, D.C. and I organized my spring trip back to the U.S. around reconnecting with my fellow friends and alum and sharing my insights as a Glocal Citizen on a panel entitled, "Africa: Bridging the Diasporic Divide." A propos, my guest, Detroit native, Dereca Blackmon has career-wide experience bridging divides. As Co-Founder and President of the Inclusion Design Group (https://inclusiondesign.com), she is also head trainer and responsible for the creation of the dynamic set of workshops and follow-up activities used by her team. Her experiential training models cut through “diversity fatigue” and allow participants to engage in deep, authentic, and meaningful dialogues. Among her prior positions, she served as the Assistant Vice Provost, Associate Dean and Director of the Diversity and First-Generation Office at Stanford University where she introduced groundbreaking work on authentic engagement, intergroup dialogue, and unconscious bias to over 30,000 students, staff, faculty and alumni. She also taught several courses at Stanford including Intergroup Communication with renowned cultural psychologist Hazel Markus (https://web.stanford.edu/~hazelm/) Reverend Deborah L. Johnson (https://deborahljohnson.org). For over 25 years, Dereca has consulted with a wide variety of corporate, educational, nonprofit, and community-based groups to facilitate “uncommon conversations” on issues of race, gender, class, and social justice. I hope this two part conversation brings you closer to understanding and embodying your own inclusion mindset.
