DENZEMBER VOL. I - Malcolm X feat. Edward Ongweso Jr.

DENZEMBER VOL. I - Malcolm X feat. Edward Ongweso Jr.

Writer, editor and podcaster Edward Ongweso Jr. returns to the show to kick off Denzember, a monthlong celebration of our greatest living actor, with a conversation about Spike Lee's seminal 1992 biopic 'Malcolm X'. It stands as one of Lee's most triumphant achievements and one of Denzel Washington's very best performances as one of the most significant figures of 20th century America.

We discuss the film's trouble gestation period, taking nearly 30 years to get to the big screen then courting controversy throughout its production. We also discuss the film's portrait of Malcolm X and offer our readings of Spike's ultimate intention - presenting a fractured portrait that embraces the many sides of the man and the many ideologies and sects that claim him. Finally, we talk about the film's noteworthy detractors, including social critic and theorist bell hooks, who makes a compelling case that the film ultimately fails to bring a meaningful portrait of Malcolm to the big screen.

Read bell hooks's review of Spike Lee's 'Malcolm X' at Artforum.

    Edward's Top 5 Denzel Performances:
    1. Malcolm X (1992)
    2. Fences (2016)
    3. Training Day (2001)
    4. The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

    Laya DeLeon Hayes on 'Insecure'

At just 18, actor Laya DeLeon Hayes already has a decade in film, television, and video games under her belt. She voiced Doc McStuffins, won a BAFTA for God of War Ragnarök, and co-starred with Queen Latifah on The Equalizer. Now she's helming a film of her own in Bomani J. Story's The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, a reimagining of Frankenstein that premiered at SXSW and is now in theaters. She comes to us today with the kind of character she hopes to see more of -- and play more of -- on screen: the fun, awkward, and freely herself Issa Dee on Insecure, as played by the show's creator, Issa Rae.

It is Thursday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. To start the show off, we have to start with some bad news. Tina Turner passed away yesterday at the age of eighty-three. Her passing comes after a prolonged illness. The rock & roll legend was acknowledged by many celebrities and every day people on social media for being the incredible icon that she was. Beyoncé and Angela Bassett are among some of the celebrities that made touching posts in remembrance of Tina Turner. Prosecutors are looking for the max prison time for Tory Lanez because they believed he displayed a complete disregard for the safety of others and the neighborhood around him. Jeff Johnson is live in the studio today and giving us Three Things We Need to Know. Today is the three year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. There were many companies and corporations that made commitments  to the black community and only four percent of those commitments have been made. It is time to hold these corporations accountable. Momma Dee had some things to say about Bambi after she said that nobody knew Scrappy until she married him. Momma Dee said Bambi has some dirt that she knows about. On What’s Trending today, The RSMS Crew talked about what today’s kids will never know about. AND MUCH MORE FUNNY!!!

    Olympus Has Fallen

    Olympus Has Fallen
Olympus Has Fallen is in the dock this week. A storming, capital film or a bunch of trumped up nonsense? Gav and Dave argue that a fine central performance from Gerard Butler and some gritty action scenes make this one to be remembered. Ausy and Alex say that there is far too much grit in a film that does not deserve such a great cast. All this with faultless impressions and a dynamite quiz! www.filmsontrial.co.uk/231

Post Credits: Oscars Reactions, Victoria Alonso out, and weekly show reviews

So the Oscars....were interesting to say the least.  Congratulations to the Winners of each and every category, but not all of the winners sat well with the guys and we DEFINITELY go in on the choices that we felt deserved their flowers.

Also, former Marvel Co-President Victoria Alonso, has officially stepped down from the position amidst what we can only imagine is trouble brewing from the disappointing slate of Visual Effects  in Marvel's USUALLY top notch productions.  Will this be a "clean slate" of sorts for future products? We have made it clear that we have been on board with this possibility for quite some time, and further discuss the future of Marvel films/shows.

Last but not least, if you've been with us for the entirety of their seasons thus far, we review the cliff hanger of a series finale to HBO Max's Masterpiece of a series, "The Last of Us" as well as the latest episode of "The Mandalorian" Season 3 on Disney Plus.  If you haven't yet caught up, SPOILER ALERT for both reviews, but IF you have, let us know what you think on twitter with #PoiNSoy or in the comments below if you're visiting us on Youtube.

Check back with us next week Friday for another "Post Credits": Your Favorite Entertainment Podcast!

    Good Vibes and Love,

What's (Jamie) Got To Do With It?

In Need to Know, the looks from the 95th Oscars are reviewed: Angela Bassett has nearly perfect...The Rock, not so much. And Isaiah has thoughts on what might have been behind Jamie Lee Curtis's surprising win for best supporting actress. In All the Feels, troublesome language and turn of phrases are discussed, and quite a few common terms originated from trauma. In Gotta Do, the co-hosts prepare listeners for the vernal equinox.

Jamie Lee Curtis’s one of four actors Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, and Jamie Lee Curtis who thought their careers may have been over but ended up winning Oscars.
