Beverly talked about how her love of reading stemmed from her mom and how proud her mom was when she started writing and publishing romance.

Slow starter heated up the feelz | Work for It by Talia Hibbert | Holiday Mashup

Slow starter heated up the feelz | Work for It by Talia Hibbert | Holiday Mashup

A city boy falls for a farmer in this angsty romance. The beginning was definitely a slow start for us, and hard to get in touch with Olu, but Griff stole our hearts in a big way.

If you didn't listen to our awesome interview with Talia Hibbert, make sure you go back and check out that episode! So amazing to talk to her and there is a full transcription of the podcast on the website.

Also - we teased our new chibi coloring book, Color Me Romance and it is SOOOOO fucking cute we can't even. Make sure you check out the website or IG to get your copy for yourself or your loved ones.

Things we talked through in this review:

    • Olu's depression and anxiety and how it made it hard for us to get into his character, but had a great payoff in his evolution as a character
    • Griff and Rebecca's friendship
    • Griff being into all people - doesn't like to define it
    • Griff being a sexy farmer who doesn't know his worth
    • Olu telling Griff to stand up for his ideas
    • Their mutual anxiety over whether the other person is happy with them
    • Rebecca staying in the tiny town because she doesn't want to leave Griff
    • Griff's slow courtship with Olu until he was ready
    • Their great sessions!! Talia writes sex scenes with emotion so well
    • Griff immediately deciding he would leave the town to be with Olu
    • Olu taking his medication and asking for help from his friends and family

What happened to her hopes and dreams?! | Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins | Fall into Historicals

What happened to her hopes and dreams?! | Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins | Fall into Historicals

    AKA Who body-snatched Pilar?

The beginning of this book rocked our world. We were both sporting 5-star feelings after the initial chapters and then when they left Miami for California the whole book started to change for us. Gone was the fun, the danger, the excitement, and it was a complete 180 of Pilar’s character and priorities.

    Some major points we discussed:

The fact that Pilar is afro Latina from Cuba and that her family was a slightly shady bunch of people where everyone had a skill to help out the group.

Love that is Pilar stealing his boat and not the standard girl stowing away on a pirate ship dressed as a boy trope. LOL

The love at first sight is the sword fight and subsequent proposal.

    The segregated train car.

When pilar threatens to kill the man who tried to assassinate Noah.

We wished Pilar’s badassery was used more and that the book had a little bit more action. Pilar was essentially a fugitive and yet no one ever came after her. And she had little opportunity for her cutthroat talents.

Four brothers take over their mom's knitting shop in Harlem | Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson | Summer Quickies

Four brothers take over their mom's knitting shop in Harlem | Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson | Summer Quickies

Bridget was especially sad as she was hyped AF before reading this book.

We had a hard time getting into the writing style and the pacing felt very confusing. The first third of the book was very heavy on the exposition and telling us the plot versus helping us feel invested in the action and showing us what was happening.

    Some major points we discussed:

Liked that they are a tribe of brothers, do we smell sequel?

Shani loved to see brown people with brown people issues in Harlem dealing and worrying about bad landlords and gentrification.

The brothers being diverse gave us some hope for some good swirl action later. We wish other characters were introduced for them.

We wanted to like this book a 5 outta 5.

Our first THROUPLE!!! Sexy married spies fall for their assistant | Pink Slip by Katrina Jackson | Summer Quickies

This book was pure fun with a sexy spy couple falling in love with their beautiful assistant.

    We talked through:

    • Our expectations of indie authors vs published authors
    • Whether the spy portion of the book needs to be believable
    • THROUPLE!
    • The  relationships between each of the three main characters
    • The longing and wanting and desires - Yowza
    • Bridget's love of this series!
    • Fucking with a strap :)
