Description / Introduction:  2022 will go down in history for the number of anti-trans bills introduced into state legislatures. Over 300 bills banning books, medical treatment, even access to the bathroom, have been introduced so far. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court seems poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade, allowing states to ban abortion (note: interview was recorded Spring 2022). As extremists crank up the volume on hate — trans people, especially trans women of color, are facing an onslaught of violence. Today’s guest, Imara Jones, has been featured on the cover of Time Magazine and POLITICO’s 2021 “Recast Power List.” She’s the producer of a podcast mini-series called “The Anti-Trans Hate Machine: A Plot Against Equality” and the creator of “TransLash Media”, a cross-platform journalism, personal storytelling, and narrative project, which seeks to shift the culture, create empathy and save trans lives. In this episode, Laura asks her what impacts these restrictions and increased control have on all of us.

    Chapters:

    (0:00:00) - The Anti-Trans Hate Machine

    (0:15:18) - Trans Resistance & Money

(0:21:10) - The Struggle for Trans Rights

    Chapter Summaries:

    (0:00:00) - The Anti-Trans Hate Machine (15 Minutes)

Laura Flanders discusses the anti-trans backlash seen in the US in 2021, and continues to be on the rise. Her guest is Imara Jones, founder and CEO of TransLash Media, a platform journalism project which seeks to shift the culture and save lives. Jones speaks about the 'anti-trans hate machine' which has been funded by billionaires, such as Betsy DeVoss, and organizations like the Heritage Foundation, Alliance Defending Freedom, and Focus on the Family.

    (0:15:18) - Trans Resistance & Money (6 Minutes)

This conversation centers around the cultural and political aspects of the TransLash Media Project. It is mentioned that while there has been progress made in terms of trans visibility, there is also a growing anti-trans backlash. It is pointed out that the anti-trans movement is heavily funded and organized, while trans organizations are vastly underfunded. It is discussed that mutual aid and local resistance are promising elements of the hope for trans people. Finally, it is noted that helping people access gender affirming care in places where it is becoming increasingly difficult is also important'

(0:21:10) - The Struggle for Trans Rights (16 Minutes)

This conversation discussed the growing recognition of the overall threats to the trans community and the importance of brave trans youth and their families speaking up and speaking out. The discussion then shifted to the need for progressive movements to think beyond elections and focus on sustainability, as well as how to invert leadership and resources. Finally, the conversation highlighted the importance of individual stories of quiet bravery and the need to rework the way social justice movements think and organize themselves. The episode concluded with an encouragement to check out TransLash and the reminder that 'bodies are the first side of liberation.'

A home 30 years in the making 🏡Ceyenne Doroshow, G.L.I.T.S.

“In creating a home, I'm creating sustainability. And I'm creating excellence within the people that I'll be housing.”- Ceyenne Doroshow

Ceyenne Doroshow is an author, activist, and the founder and executive director of G.L.I.T.S., an organization dedicated to creating sustainable housing and healthcare for Black transgender people.

Ceyenne has become “the parent that she desperately wanted as a child” for people around the world. At an early age, Ceyenne identified as transgender and faced a world lacking even the language to understand the experience of a trans person.

In June 2020, Ceyenne co-organized the historic Liberation March, a Black Trans Lives Matter silent march in Brooklyn, NY. At the march, Ceyenne announced to a crowd of more than 15,000 people that G.L.I.T.S. had raised more than $1 million to secure stable housing for Black trans-New Yorkers.

Through providing both education and housing, Ceyenne is empowering the next generation of Black transgender leaders. We talk with her about the structure and language she has given to the G.L.I.T.S. community at large to create more leaders.

    Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:

    • Origin story. “Sex work, that was my platform. That's how I grew up. That's how I learned a lot about organization. But community is who I am.”
    • First member. Alia Adams called Ceyenne from Uganda.
    • Creating structure and vetting leaders. The application process and contract G.L.I.T.S. members enter into.
    • Creating leaders. Creating a path for leaders to emerge in the G.L.I.T.S. house.

👋🏻Say hi to Ceyenne and learn more about G.L.I.T.S.

"I have a Queery about...Being Trans, Part 2" ft. Sunshine Bella

"How do you know if you're trans?" "What would our spirits be if we didn't have oppressive voices telling us what to be?" "What is the energy that connects all Queer people?" "Why do we need to say 'black lives matter' and 'black trans lives matter?'"

On this episode, I interview Sunshine Bella (she/her), published author, hair and fashion stylist, empowerment speaker, and the first trans woman and trans woman of color to be on the board of the Alliance For Full Acceptance. On of the first things I was curious about in interviewing Sunshine was all of the incredible accomplishments on her resume. She states how it stemmed from a mentor she had who empowered her to use her voice and taught her that our lives are not about us and the things we experience only. This especially rung true as a Queer and Trans individual who wanted to work to change people's perception of Trans identity and help inspire others to live out and proud. Sunshine reveals her journey of eventually coming out as trans; how it was through a spiritual encounter that she began that journey after many years of trying to define who she was. Also, in considering Black Lives Matter, we discuss the importance of saying Black Trans Lives Matter at protests, on social media, because of the history of black trans people being excluded from both the Black community and the Queer community but still being expected to fight for the cause.

    Things also discussed:

    • Using your platform to increase visibility for and acceptance of Queer people
    • The importance of educating yourself on the experiences of others to be a better ally and Queer person
    • The beautiful spiritual energy that connects all Queer people
    • Advice Sunshine has for anyone who is trans contemplating whether they want to socially transition or medically transition
    • Words Sunshine has for people who do not understand someone who is trans
