    Twerking At Essence Fest

    Twerking At Essence Fest

Welcome to Bonnets With Blazers with your host Laqwanda Roberts-Buckley. I've decided to talk about twerking at Essence Fest and why some of the discussion rubbed me the wrong way.  My views may vary but it really is interesting the conversations folks have about things.

Any episodes you see prior to this one are from a previous podcast. They will stay put and probably be recycled.

    Willy Nilly Repercussions and Reactions

    Willy Nilly Repercussions and Reactions

The Black "Meh's" have all been been consumed, in one way or another, in the first few days following that  Will Smith incident at the Oscars, but like Jemele Hill pointed out in The Atlantic, There Are Two America's Debating Will and Chris Rock.

Hell, there might be 3 different America's exploring this in our conversation.

    Quotable Notables:

"What I'm noticing is for Black women, this really, hits some like trauma points and some wounds and like need to be witnessed and like need for safety. And I feel like another conversation has been created as a result of it that, um, it's just fascinating and it's so much pain out there of not being seen, not being heard, not being witnessed." - Eric Fleming

"I think the first conversation that we need to have that I still don't think everybody has heard is that Black women have been out here unprotected and Black women have been traumatized in a lot of different ways, by the way, folks within our own community do not protect us. So first we need to all agree and understand that Black women do need to be protected period. And then we can talk about how and what does that look like." - Luna Malbroux

"I think what Will put on line is his brand. And in some ways that's not big stakes, but his, his brand is so tied with a Black acceptability. And that is one of those things that I think we're kind of ready to let go of." - Glenn Carerre

"How do we make protecting Black women about Black women and not about our honor?" - Glenn Carerre

Cancel Me? Who Gon Cancel Me?

Cancel Me? Who Gon Cancel Me?

Blessing you with a surprise episode! This time Justin & Kendal discuss "canceled culture." What does it mean to be "canceled" and how much are we willing to forgive? Can a racist be redeemed? Is Twitter the devil? Where do you draw the line when it comes to unsubscribing from artists that offend you? We answer all of these questions and more!

This episode is much more than canceled culture. This episode was published because many of you can likely relate to some of what we discussed. Hope you enjoy!

#50. The Many Layers of Black Womanhood with Kenesha Sneed

#50. The Many Layers of Black Womanhood with Kenesha Sneed

Press play and journey through the musings of an incredible and impactful multidisciplinary artist we love, Kenesha Sneed. She truly embodies what it means to be a multifaceted Black woman through her exploration of art forms and absolute refusal to be boxed into any specific way of being. We’re especially lucky to catch Kenesha at this time as she celebrates ten years of crafting her artistry in a meaningful way. As is clear from our conversation and look through her work, what she brings to this world will last in your soul for a lifetime. In this conversation, Black Girl In Om Founder Lauren Ash and Art Director Deun Ivory explore Black womanhood as an entity in Kenesha's work, the path compassion for your craft can take you, grief and the importance of a support system, and the layers we all peel back to go a little deeper.

What does it mean to be a Black woman existing? Kenesha adds her sentiment to this question and as you listen, we invite you to do the same. Even though as a Black woman existing, there are pops of color and light, behind all of that there is someone still seeking and searching for solace.

Follow her artistic path on her website and feel more of her illustration vibes by perusing Tactile Matter.
