    Acting Superstitions & The "M-Word"

    Acting Superstitions & The "M-Word"

Join Kelley and Max as we explore a few well-known and not-so-well-known acting superstitions.  We explore what they are and offer logical explanations for why they came to be and include:

    • Whistling backstage
    • Ghost lights
    • No blue costumes on stage
    • No mirrors on stage
    • Bad dress rehearsals
    • No peacock feathers

We also discuss the origin of wishing someone luck by telling them to "break a leg" and how that came into our modern lexicon. Finally, we address the Scottish Play (Macbeth), how it has an unlucky and sometimes deadly history, and how to combat the curse if it's said in a theater.  We look at the history from the first performance when the actor playing Lady McB died to the most recent instance when Chris Rock congratulated Denzel Washington on his performance as the Scottish King, only to be slapped by Will Smith just a few minutes later.

DISCLAIMER - if you are in a theater and superstitious, when we get to the part about the Scottish tragedy at minute 25:47, you might want to put the podcast on pause, but if you do hear the name of the Scottish king in the theater, we offer ways to combat the curse.  This is the link to the hilarious scene with arrogant actors in Black Adder that we mention.

    043 - Once In A \ Every Lifetime

    043 - Once In A \ Every Lifetime

In between brief rants about dentists, deodorant and lottery tickets, we get on with it. The Captain plugs the upcoming cinema reissue of one of the greatest concert films of all time. On TV, the NZ comedy drama Far North is proving to be a winner.
ElTele is astonished to find an additional hidden character in a classic comedy series. We talk about a track-by-track guide to the music of The Smiths, and lyrics references in general.
The Captain tries to explain his attraction to Taskmaster, the NZ version specifically, and Tina from Turners!

We'd also like to know if listeners have any TV memory from their childhood that has never left them?

    Blackadder

    Blackadder

On this episode we journey through the decades with one of the most sarcastic and devious characters in British comedy, Edmund Blackadder. Dipping into a couple episodes of each series, we discuss the shows evolution, its highs and its lows. We resist the temptation to go down too many history rabbit holes and talk about the production, the cast and what it is that makes this one of the most loved UK comedy classics.

Comedy, Curiosity & Creating QI with BAFTA-Winning Producer John Lloyd CBE #25

Comedy, Curiosity & Creating QI with BAFTA-Winning Producer John Lloyd CBE #25

The chances that your life has been completely devoid of content without John Lloyd CBE’s involvement is slim-to-none. With a roster of work reading like a memoir of British cultural phenomena through sound and screen (QI, Blackadder, Spitting Image, and No Such Thing As A Fish to name but a few), his dedication to creating engaging content shines in lieu of career changes and runs of misfortune.

In a truly captivating discussion with Lee Cooper, John ponders many of life’s tribulations and the lessons to be learned from every hurdle that most would call “failure”. From the closed door of straight acting that opened up the opportunity to produce radio shows, right through to earning his rightful reputation as an industry icon, we’re taken on a journey through his highest highs and toughest challenges.

    Lee and John discuss:

    • John’s multinational childhood, and the values it taught him
    • Reaching your full potential and finding your success, even if not in a conventional sense
    • Focusing on ‘autotelic’ work - content worth doing for its own sake and not for others
    • Learning more from failure than from success
    • The evolution, and current barren state, of cultural movements that inspired particular art styles and creative trends
    • Finding meditation in your work
