Four Films From Todd Browning: The Devil Doll, Freaks, The Unknown, & The Mystic

Four Films From Todd Browning: The Devil Doll, Freaks, The Unknown, & The Mystic

Join us for a captivating  discussion of classic horror auteur Tod Browning with George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive, and esteemed film historians, Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr. Their 20-year-long collaboration started with the DVD release of Mel Brooks’ "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," and has now extended to creating an audio commentary for the upcoming horror/sci-fi film, "The Devil Doll" (1936).  That's the jumping-off point for our discussion and appreciation of four of Tod Browning's films released for the first time on Blu-ray in October.

This episode is also a testament to the importance of preserving and cherishing physical media, highlighted through the restoration of Browning's classic horror masterpiece, "Freaks" (1932), undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with Warner Bros. You don't want to miss George Feltenstein's engaging story about the film master that was used in this restoration, and the fifty-year journey to return it to its rightful owner.  We also dissect the artistry behind Browning's 'The Mystic' (1925) and 'The Unknown' (1927), and the wonderful work Criterion did in restoring and presenting these silent films.

Lastly, we revisit the profound themes present in Browning's films, showcasing the darker aspects of human nature and crime. This episode is a celebration of classic horror cinema and a tribute to the artistry of director Tod Browning.

    Discretion

    Discretion

Today I need to talk about something that's super important in relationships with women: DISCRETION. It's a key skill to have if you want to be successful and date a lot of people. I know that society still looks down on people who date multiple partners, and that's why Discretion is necessary to avoid judgment and negative consequences.

I want to give a shoutout to other dating experts out there who also emphasize the importance of Discretion in different types of relationships. It's not just about avoiding judgment, but also about respecting the women you're dating. Bragging about sexual conquests is never a good idea, and it can compromise a woman's social standing. Instead, I suggest using Subcommunication to convey your sexual prowess without putting anyone at risk.

So, remember: Discretion is key in any relationship, and it's especially important when you're dating multiple partners. Let's all strive to be respectful and mindful of the people we're involved with.

The Joseph W. South Show – Volume 1 is packed with even more practical insights and personal stories than what you saw in my last book. Building on the success of Practical Female Psychology for the Practical Man, this book provides you with a deeper understanding of female psychology and how to apply it to everyday interactions with women.

Whether you're a new reader or a returning fan you'll find plenty of useful advice in these pages. I bring decades of experience to the table, having made every mistake possible when it comes to the opposite sex. From divorce and child custody battles to wild sex and successful relationships I've seen and done it all!

It's not just men who stand to benefit. Female readers of the original book have raved about how PFP helped them understand their own thinking and the differences between masculine and feminine thought processes.

In a world where dating, sex, and relationships are complex and difficult to manage, I offer practical advice on how to overcome shyness, interact comfortably with the opposite sex, and find sexual partners. I share experiences of meeting and having sex with a lot of women, despite not being super rich, tall, or with model-good looks.

Living in a World of Hoes part 3

In episode 4 of my podcast, I discuss the topic of Hoes, Freaks, and Good Girls, and how to understand and screen for each type in all your relationships. I share comments from Mr. Paradise, the author of the book 21st Century Fox: Space Age Pimping, who provides insights on Social Proof and the importance of Eye Contact in relationships. I emphasize the importance of screening for Good Girls if one is looking for a long-term relationship and warn against getting into relationships with Hoes. I also discuss the importance of Confidence in attracting women. I discuss Tariq Nasheed's 20 dos and don'ts for Macks in this and the next episode.

Living in a World of Hoes

Living in a World of Hoes

Hey there! It's your favorite podcast host, Joseph W. South, back with another episode of The Joseph W. South Show. Today, we're going to dive into some feedback and follow-up questions from our last episode. One listener asked about sugar mamas and whether a woman can feel both maternal and sexual energy for a man at the same time. Let me tell you, I've had my fair share of experiences with sugar mamas and I've got some stories to share. Plus, I'll tell you about a female friend's experience with a younger man who just couldn't get his act together.

But that's not all, folks. We're also going to talk about the three primary types of women: Freaks, Hoes, and Good Girls. And let's face it, society has this messed up idea that men should always pay for the company of women. Well, I'm here to tell you that you don't have to fall into that trap. Be exceptional, my friends. Don't be like everyone else who feels he has no choice but to always pay for women's company.

I discuss society's mentality that men should pay for the company of women, which is why Hoes are motivated by material benefits. I talk about the classic debate about who should pay for dinner on a first or second date. I spoke to a woman who admitted that women talk about guys' spending habits and refer to guys who don't want to spend money as 'creeps', 'losers', and 'cheapskates'.

This mentality is a snapshot of what the world believes. I point out the billions of dollars spent by men on women on Valentine's day and through the jewelry industry. I talk about the child support system, where 84% of the $40 billion spent in the United States in 2002 came from men's bank accounts and went into women's bank accounts, indicating that women are considered better caregivers and more capable of taking care of a child.

So sit back, relax, and let's get into it!

HILF 12: Freaks with Christine Blackburn

HILF 12: Freaks with Christine Blackburn

Christine Blackburn is not only the guest for this episode, but also the gracious host as we recorded at her kitchen table in Los Feliz, California. Christine is the host of the long-running and much-loved podcast, Story Worthy - and it's live show counterpart, Story Smash

00:01:53 - Thanks for being here. We’ve shared a joint… you’re holding a cat. No two women have been more prepared. Dawn introduces  Christine. Her podcast, Story Worthy has had over 725 episodes, running 12 years.

00:04:04 - Dawn and Christine commence fucking the history of FREAKS! Dawn asks Christine why the subject interests her and she said that it is the combination from the performers themselves of joy and laughter (sometimes) along with their deformities and apparent suffering.

00:06:04 - Dawn presents her primary source of information regarding Joseph Merrick and much of the Freak Show culture in Europe in the 1880's. The True History of the Elephant Man by Michael Howells and Peter Ford

00:06:43 - We take a moment to discuss the word, “Freak”.  It's modern usage appears to arise in 1847 in reference to a ‘freak of nature’ a malformed member of a species. Annie Jones - an early and famous 'bearded lady' - did take vocal objection to the word but seems to be an outlier.

00:08:32 - Dawn commences The Story of The Elephant man, Joseph Merrick. How he came to meet Dr. Treeves and how he became more than just a 'freak' but a cultural icon featured in theater, film, and music over many decades.

00:13:57 - Dawn asks Christine: Do you think Freak Shows are good or bad? Dawn compares it as 'a living' to sex work and child labor (in so far as we discuss it today with minor athletes and artists). We can't really evaluate how 'good or bad' it is until we know how emancipated the individual who is doing it is. Are they empowered or exploited? Are they making this choice freely and being compensated fairly? ...then we may not need to worry how 'happy' they are with their work any more than we do with anyone else.

00:19:13 - There were several so-called 'freaks' who made good as freak show performers over the years leading up to Joseph Merrick, and he would have been aware that displaying himself was a fair alternative to poverty.

    For example:

    1. 00:19:40 - Lazarus and Joannes Baptista Colloredo: Conjoined twins from 17th Century Europe.
    2. 00:21:21 - Matthew Buckinger. No hands, no feet - he’s known for his micograhy. 4 marriages, 14 children (at least) by 8 different women... probably because he was an excellent listener.

00:22:48 - They come back to Joseph Merrick. Not only his life up to meeting Dr. Treeves (spoiler alert, there is an honest-to-goodness wicked step mother) but up to his death.  A beautiful death, if ever such a thing were possible.

00:34:49 - Having heard his story, Christine has some questions: Did they ever pitch him as psychic? No, Dawn says, what was amazing about him was his normalcy. The dichotomy of his look to his being. Tom Norman sold him as amazing to look at, and more amazing because he's just like us.

    BREAK

00:39:53 - Dawn thanks Christine for sharing her dope and providing the 'OPP' that was so celebrated at the top of the show. She also introduces our modern-day freaks like some of the cast of American Horror Story - season 4.

00:42:38 - Christine shares a story from her time at a ski resort in Colorado "back in the day." The premise is that wealth is great... but sometimes you get a perfect day for free.

00:43:14 - Dawn begins her list of  FILF’S - Freaks I’d Like to Fuck (with consent, of course). The first - a featured performer from the classic 1932 film FEAKS: Schlitzie Surtese. The Pinhead

00:46:00 - The 'Siamese' Twins. Chang and Eng Bunker.

00:48:16 - Frank Lentini, the 3-legged man. He has 3 fully-functioning legs. Full set of fully-functioning genitals. “Very well-liked. Dawn and Christine discuss how that act would go. Christine is against it, Dawn thinks it could have its advantages.

00:49:51 - Ella Harper, The Camel Girl. The first Merch Success Story.

00:52:37 - Prince Randian - The Living Torso. No arms, no legs - he could roll a cigarette, could play virtually every instrument, spoke 5 languages, had 5 kids and was brought to the circus by PT Barnum, and made a fortune. Died a very old, wealthy man.

Christine and Dawn discuss a variety of tangents before signing off, including what our particular act would be in our own sideshow...

THANK YOU - listener - for tuning in and reading this far. We appreciate you and thank you and can't wait to see you next time. When we do it will be for COLONIAL COCKTAILS with RASHID GREEN one of the hosts of THE BARLESS TENDER.

    In the meantime...

248 - P.T. Barnum and His "Human Curiosities"

248 - P.T. Barnum and His "Human Curiosities"

Big episode for a big, complex topic today. PT Barnum has been called the The Greatest Showman on Earth. And he certainly was the most famous promoter of the 19th century. He brought entertainment to millions, and millions loved him for it. He also stirred up a fair amount of controversy and many in the modern day have not looked back kindly on him. He often lied to his audience about the nature of his acts - and his acts were often people with physical abnormalities or deformities. Did he exploit them for profit? Yes. Without a doubt. But did he also provide for them a means to make life-changing and empowering income? He did. Does that justify the exploitation? That's up to you to decide. PT Barnum continues to entertain (and probably offend) today, on Timesuck. Hail Nimrod!
