The Springtime of the Peoples (feat. Chris Barker)

The Springtime of the Peoples (feat. Chris Barker)

Josiah is joined by his first return guest, Chris Barker, to discuss the revolutions of 1848. While the string of revolutions that rocked Europe over the year were ultimately a failure, their legacy lived on and shaped the way modern politics developed. This is the year nationalism became a real political force. This is the year Marx wrote the Communist Manifesto. The ripple effects from this event would stretch everywhere and the conversation goes all over the place because of that, from abolitionists in the U.S. to the Hungarian revolt against the soviets in 1956. Beyond that though, this is mostly an episode of two history nerds getting excited about history.

Here's the episode of Mammonburg with Keanu Heydari we mention a few times.

Today's guest is no longer on any social media, but he hangs out in the Mammonburg discord a lot.

John Brown: The First American to Hang for Treason

John Brown: The First American to Hang for Treason

He was arrested in 1859 for his role in the Harpers Ferry raid – an event that set the stage for the American Civil War. He was convicted of treason, as well as for murder, and for instigating insurrection. We’re talking about American abolitionist John Brown, the first person executed for treason in the United States.

Fritz Pollard A Man for All Seasons

Fritz Pollard A Man for All Seasons

We celebrate Black History Month with the many “firsts” achieved by Fritz Pollard. Not only did Frederick Douglass Pollard come from a well-educated family, but he was perhaps the greatest early African American football player. In this episode, Fritz goes through early life in Chicago and plants a toe in nearly every Ivy League college before leading Brown University to the Rose Bowl and its greatest heights in 1916.

    14.) Franklin Pierce 1853-1857

"We Polked  you in 44, we're Pierce you in 52!"

Franklin Pierce may have my favorite campaign slogan yet. But in terms of presidencies, wow, this guy is a total disaster. I mean, Millard Fillmore just nuked the only major opposition party into oblivion. Governing should be easy, right? Not when you're Pierce, who do his best to one-up Fillmore and wreck the Democratic party on the bloody shoal known as "Bleeding Kansas."

Follow along as Pierce falls hilariously short in his pursuit of military glory in the Mexican-American War, gets elected president anyway when Democratic partisans can't agree on any of the more-qualified candidates, and then triggers a mini Civil War in Kansas after he passes the Kansas-Nebraska act.

By the time Pierce leaves office, we'll be four years away from The Civil War.

    218 - The Bloody Benders

    218 - The Bloody Benders

Life was NOT easy on the American frontier for European and American settlers in the 19th century. You lived off the land or you died trying. You were always one wrong move from freezing or starving to death. You had to defend your property from horse thieves, bandits, and American Indian tribes understandably pissed off that you’d just settled on land they still felt belonged to them. And if you lived in or traveled around Cherryvale or the Osage Township in rural southeastern Kansas, you had another thing to worry about: being literally hammered to death by the Bloody Benders - a family of four killers. The Benders, sometimes called “America’s first serial killer family,” killed travelers that were unlucky enough to stop for the night at their tiny inn. As settlers swung through on their way to make a new life for themselves in the wild west, maybe carve out a small fortune, they were seated at a table, and the head of the murderous family, ol’ Pa Bender would beat their skulls in. Then daughter Kate would slit their throats, and then either Ma or John Junior would drop their body into the cellar via a trap door. And later, one of the members of the Bender brood would bury the body in the orchard or vegetable garden out back.
This tale is a straight up real life horror movie in this week's, is this a new Rob Zombie movie? or an actual historical examination? episode, of Timesuck.

    The Election of 1860 - Part 1

    The Election of 1860 - Part 1

Hey y'all! This is a topic that historians describe as "a big 'un."

For the next few weeks we're going to be talking about the election of Abraham Lincoln and all of the things that had to happen for a brand new political party go from upstart troublemakers to having control of the House, Senate, and Presidency in the span of six years.

In part one, we're going full high school history on your butts! It's thirty years of all the Compromises that hit the snooze button on Civil War while also leading the nation into inevitable battle.
