Episode 128: Hannah Rowan / Blondie

Episode 128: Hannah Rowan / Blondie

    Introducing the Band:
Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Hannah Rowan. Hannah is the managing editor of Modern Age. You can find her on X at @Hannah_Cristine and read her review of Debbie Harry's memoir here.

    Hannah’s Music Pick: Blondie
Here's another artist we get to cross off the list of long-awaited episodes. Both Jeff and Scot have been hot to do Blondie for years and it has nothing (okay, relatively little) to do with the attractive woman fronting the band. It’s the music that means so much, even after all these years.

Blondie, as Jeff argues, is perhaps the quintessential new wave band, but they started by paying tribute to girl-group sounds and garage rock of the '60s on the band’s first record. From there, singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, the two leaders of the group, led Blondie through a wide variety of styles and genres. The band was as comfortable playing power pop and new wave as they later would be incorporating disco, reggae, and even rap into their sound. Blondie recorded four number one songs -- "Heart of Glass," "Call Me," "The Tide Is High," and "Rapture" -- and you couldn’t quite stick any of them inside the same box.

And we can’t escape the visual aspect. It’s impossible to separate what you see from what you hear. Debbie Harry was a striking figure to lead the group. And Blondie was a band that was deliberate in how it presented itself -- from album covers to stage apparel to making videos for every song on a record, which predated the MTV-era by a good half-decade or so.

The timeframe for the band's brilliance is relatively short and we spend very little time on the post-reunion work (apologies to fans of Pollinator). But what was created at the end of the 1970s truly stands the test of time. The music, in many ways, pointed forward toward what we would hear throughout the decade of the 1980s.

    Debbie Harry

    Debbie Harry

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...

There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising.

We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.

    THANK YOU FOR LISTENING

Summer of the 80s, Part 4: 1983 - Canadian Carnage (Videodrome & Spasms)

Summer of the 80s, Part 4: 1983 - Canadian Carnage (Videodrome & Spasms)

Time to venture north of the border to discuss one of the Common Craig's favorites, and a first time watch that doesn't work out so well. Death to snake movies that fail to deliver enough wriggling, writhing action! Long live the Summer of the 80s! And hello Canada!

Ah, the Common Craig's dreams of being some sort of video pirate, intercepting broadcasts, potentially seeing things that no one should see! Yeah, after watching Videodrome (1983), it really seems more like a nightmare scenario, I guess. Leave it to David Cronenberg to get me all worked up, and then slap me in the face with the potential horrors you may encounter. Best to leave these problems to James Woods and Debbie Harry. They're into some kinky stuff in this one.

As a snake movie connoisseur, I would appreciate this devil serpent getting more screen time. But maybe that's why the title really has nothing to do with this giant snake. Because they ran out of money during the production and could barely get it in front of the camera! I hope that Oliver Reed and Peter Fonda had a good time between takes, because Spasms (1983) did very little else for their careers.

And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1983! Which probably does not include Spasms.

EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 9 PUNK Magazine's JOHN HOLMSTROM

EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 9 PUNK Magazine's JOHN HOLMSTROM

EYE ON THE EAST VILLAGE Episode 9 features special guest JOHN HOLMSTROM, OG East Village resident artist, designer and creator of PUNK Magazine.  While EV Grieve remains behind-the-scenes, Alex Carpenter & Maegan Hayward of the East Village Vintage Collective are back to guest co-host for an in-depth and hilarious conversation with the iconic magazine's founder and publisher. John tells amazing stories about his early years in the city, creating PUNK and becoming an integral part of the CBGB's scene, his many adventures collaborating with downtown's greatest artists and musicians over the years, being a cartoonist at heart and much, much more.

John Holmstrom created PUNK Magazine in 1975, which launched the CBGB/punk rock movement and was instrumental in the success of many bands such as Blondie, the Ramones, and the Dead Boys. Its hand-lettered graphics inspired many crudely-designed fanzines and helped create the “punk art” that inspired the East Village art scene.

He has drawn and designed many posters, t-shirt designs, record, book and CD covers for The Ramones, The Dandy Warhols, the Rolling Stones, 50 Kaitenz and Murphy’s Law, magazines such as Bananas, High Times, Heavy Metal, and Video Games and has collaborated on films such as DOA: A Right of Passage and CBGB. His archives are housed in Yale University's Beinecke Library and his work is on display at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and in the permanent archives of the Museum of Modern Art.
