Ep. 176: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots pt.2
This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn’t break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long.
What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.
Songs this week include:
- Chequered Past – “A World Gone Wild” from Chequered Past (1984)
- California Breed – “Midnight Oil” from California Breed (2014)
- BackBeat Band – “Rock & Roll Music” from BackBeat – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994)
- Brides Of Destruction – “Brace Yourself” from Brides Of Destruction (2004)
- Robin Trower - “Life On Earth” from BLT (1981)
- Down ‘N’ Outz – “By Tonight” from My ReGeneration (2010)
- Metal Allegiance – “Wait Until Tomorrow” from Metal Allegiance (2015)

Rock n Roll Grad School #121 The Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock
Glen Matlock was famously fired from the Sex Pistols for, supposedly, owning a Beatles record. Well, Glen has put that musical use to knowledge over the past 40 or so years. He's got a new solo album out called Consequences Coming that's just as angry and fun as any Pistols song. (Plus we talk about his work with Blondie and the recently concluded Iggy Pop tribute show.)
For more information, you can check out his website or follow him on his Facebook page.
#004 - Hans Hölzel - Into The Light
Rock n Roll Grad School #113 Guitarist Kevin Armstrong (Tin Machine, Iggy Pop) on the Lust for Life Tour
Kevin Armstrong made his debut with David Bowie during Live Aid. No pressure there. He's written with Bowie and played with Iggy Pop on and off for several decades.
Now, Kevin is part of the all-star Lust For Life tour, featuring the Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock and Blondie's Clem Burke and others as they join together to play Iggy's classic "Lust for Life" all the way through, and then finish up the night with some of the best known songs from all the band members. It is happening right now in the UK. For more information, tickets and dates, check out the website.

Ep. 161: Diggin' Up Sum Punx - 80's New Wave - Punk Beginnings
This week we travel back in time to the radical 80s when the 2nd British Invasion hit the States in the form of New Wave! However, we are exploring the true background of all these big pop hit makers; when they were PUNK! Whether you like this style of music or not, this is a fun exploration of the seedy underground beginning of some of the biggest 80s pop stars.
This episode features songs with short track lengths and lots of, “No way! I can’t believe that’s ____”! It’s PUNK ROCK people! It’s fun and filthy and is where Kevin started down his path of music fanaticism. These songs are all firmly in the category of “Forgotten”. We hope we introduce to some tunes you may not have heard from these big New Wave hit makers.
Songs this week include:
- Neon – “Information Of Death” from Obsessions EP (1982)
- The Cure – “I Dig You” from I’m A Cult Hero (1979)
- Beastie Boys – “Ode To…” from Polly Wog Stew EP (1982)
- Joy Division – “Warsaw” from Substance 1977-1980 (1978)
- The Go-Go’s - “Party Pose” from Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go’s (1979)
- Generation X – “Ready Steady Go” from Generation X (1978)
- Bananarama – “No Feelings (Sex Pistols)” from Party Party – The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1983)

Interview with Zack Kaplan to talk Forever Forward #1 - Out August 24
Art by Arjuna Susini with colors are by Brad Simpson and letters by Jim Campbell
- For our readers, what is Forever Forward?
- Do you have to create charts or a bulletin board to keep track of timelines/theories?
- I’m pretty surprised to see a book identify the invading force when so many choose to keep that vague. What made you decide to go ahead and say, “This is who we’re fighting?”
- There’s so much detail to the tech designs. How detailed was the lab description in the script? Same with the futuristic bits?
- The first issue uses a lot of double-page layouts instead of conventional layout structures, what made you go that route?
- Forever Forward is published under Scout, what made them the right publisher for this project?
- What is it about science going horribly right?
- Given the number of sci-fi stories you’ve got going this year alone, do you have a book of ideas that are yet untapped and how many good ideas are there?
- Do you have any other projects you’d like to talk about today?
