385 - Brain Damage, Murder, and Football: The Aaron Hernandez Story

I've wanted to dig into this story for a couple of years now. Aaron seemed to have EVERYTHING going for him. And he threw it all away through committing the most confusing, impulsive acts of violence. How much did the severe case of CTE football gave him lead to the murder (and probably multiple murders) he committed?

Congrats to the Suck Ranger, Tyler Sea, and please wish him luck on the next chapter of his life. He's a great dude and we will miss having him around!

    Swans See Off Ugly Docklings

    Swans See Off Ugly Docklings

Hey it worked for Marnus Labuschagne! And it did look like Alex Pearce was getting reverse swing on the odd kick. Time to Restump Podcast Saturday’s 12 minute loss to the Swans.

We got off to a flyer but we stopped as fast as we started and it was the first quarter curse yet again that destroyed us… or rather it was what we did or didn’t do in it that destroyed us

What if we start internally applying our games in 5ths? Say five 16-minute periods. That way we would avoid first quarters. Has it really come to that type of preposterous thinking?

After getting 18 disposals, 2 inside 50’s and kicking one goal one before the Swans had a single possession, the game was pretty much over at 16 minutes later, as mental as those sounds.

It was as if centre clearances and spreading from the contest were foreign terms. We largely leveled up the numbers by the end of the night but, like has been the case all year, the damage was done.

Luke Jackson and Josh Treacy combined admirably in the ruck but there is no substitute for Sean Darcy. That said, he was there for the first quarter last week.

Thank goodness for Luke Ryan. He was exceptional as he nearly always is and the margin would have blown out with out his performance.

With his 23 touches, 9 contested and 8 ground ball get (second most on the ground behind Caleb Serong) Liam Henry continues to dismiss his critics. He’s made the wing his own and if anyone else wants it they’re going to have to fight to take it off him.

We raised the prospect last week that Alex Pearce may not be the captain that is required, or more so that he doesn’t play in a position to make an influential difference when needed. Is the captaincy question rearing it head again?

As disappointing as the post-bye season has been, we still believe we’re not far off the pack. It looks like a lack of cohesion and connection and an absence of a bit of grunt and agro in the middle rather than talent. And if that is the case, it is rectifiable with offseason focus.

We’d all love to be chatting about a victory but win lose or draw we soldier on. The monotony is biting us all but we bind together, hunker down and weather the storm like only Freo fans know how.

So, friends. Romans, countrymen… lend us your ears, pack your mental strength and come along for our interpretation of the current deep purple situation.

    Welcome The Stanley Trimmer

    Welcome The Stanley Trimmer

What a great story Ethan “Snipper” Stanley is. There is always something to get out of, I’d say a fruitless season… but it’s a season that has gone pear shaped! Time to Restump Podcast Snipper’s debut against the Swans.

Our finals chances may resemble a flatlining Chaddy Fletcher on the Las Vegas strip but there is still life in the season when you get to see your recruits make their debuts. We’re putting these remaining games of 2023 to good use.

At this point of the year, its not now so much about wins and losses but rather, structure, game style disciplines and the Ronnie Corbetts and Snipper Stanleys. We brought these players into the club for a reason so let’s get them opportunity and see what unfolds.

That said, we’re not dismissing the importance of putting wins on the board as you don’t want to end the season spiralling downwards into a sea of losses. We need to get something solid and beneficial out of these games to build on for 2024.

The Swans are in a similar boat to us. Their drawn game against Geelong a few weeks back has provided them possibly with a fraction of a chance to make it the eight.

We beat them earlier in the year on their home Milo tin lid of a deck but they’re probably in better form now and they bring pretty much a full-strength list to Optus Saturday night. It will be a big ask for us Freo folk in what will surely be Buddy’s finale in WA.

When the Swans win the marks inside 50 battle, they genuinely win the game. Only once this year have they won the inside 50 mark count and lost the game. So, our undermanned defence is going to need a chop out from the mids.

Just six games left for us in 2023 so its time for us and the club to make the most of them.

While opinions on Buddy Franklin vary greatly, the reality is for football fans first, we’ve all been privileged to be part of his era. It’ll be a while, if ever, we get to see another player come close to what he was able to do. Post match, win lose or draw, Buddy Franklin deserves a respectful nod of appreciation and acknowledgement from us Freo folk.

Plenty more to cover so let’s leave the niceties there and start the pluck of the red and white ducks! So, if you’ve nothing better to do, and I find that very hard to believe, bung this 45 minutes in your ears and come along for the conversation.

    Jackarce Just Writing The Script

    Jackarce Just Writing The Script

They’re writing their own script, directing, producing and staring in the show. Can we call it a Jackarce juggernaut yet? Time to Restump Podcast the strangling of the Swans.

It was supposed to be a daunting trip to the SCG. But when you think about it, three quarters of our team hadn’t played there so technically they hadn’t lost there! Consequently, they had no historic baggage to carry.

It was probably as polished a performance as we have put in all year, admittedly against an undermanned and undersized Swans outfit. But you can only beat who you’re up against and you still have to get the job done. Against more moderate or compromised opponents it allows you to develop your system in real time and gain valuable confidence boosting victories.

The Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson combination, known as Jackarce, ridiculously dominated the entire game. They were both beyond exceptional and they will take a lot from the last two weeks into future games against top end teams.

Something that no doubt warmed the cockles of all our purple hearts were not only the individual performances of Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy, but the functionality of the forward line, the connectivity with the mids and the cohesion as a whole. Sure, its by no means a finished and settled product but what we saw Saturday had to elevate your heart rate!

Can we stop for a moment to give Lachie Schultz some love? How this guy gets out of bed the next morning after a bruising battering performance like that is one of the great mysteries! God help this fearless man with what will be chronic aches and pains post career! That was arguably Schultzy’s career best game.

It wasn’t just all the forwards and mids though because the Captain deserves great recognition. Has he simplified his game and gone back to doing what he does best? Running straight lines and old-fashioned minimal possession gathering defending.

Are we back? Have we turned our season around? Or while we’ve shown great improvement, did we salvage two wins against similar opponents? Whatever the case we’re just a win and percentage out of the eight.

We could go on and on…. and we will on the pod.

So, if enjoying the journey and over celebrating victories that we probably should have expected, is your thing, you’re in luck because it’s ours as well. So, grab a beverage, put on your best purple togs, jump right in and join us in the conversational pool, the water is warm.

    It's Getting A Little Stale

    It's Getting A Little Stale

The SCG trip usually sees the best laid plans go a rye. But a travelling Sean Darcy and Nat Fyfe combo… it is the best thing since sliced bread. Let’s quit loafing about and Restump Podcast preview the clash against the Swannies.

Four wins from eighteen attempts against Sydney at the SCG doesn’t exactly suggest happy hunting ground does it? However, we may just be getting the Swans at the right time. They’ve lost a further couple of key players and their season to date isn’t overly flash.

We’re both three and five and we’re in 11th and 12th respectively, with Sydney nudging us out occupying just a four-point superior percentage. They’ve only beaten Gold Coast Richmond and Hawthorn but they are a four goal better side at the SCG than they are away.

We’re not getting ahead of ourselves by any stretch of the imagination but we’re starting to raise a hopeful eyebrow with the view to move into cautiously optimistic territory.

Swans have lost Tom McCartin and Peter Ladhams which is pretty handy for us. McCartin’s out further stretches their defensive capabilities and Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson (JackArce) now go up against an underdone Tom Hickey and Hayden McLean combo.

We’re going in with an unchanged list, probably the best sub that has ever been and measuredly high on confidence after the performance against the Hawks.

The Swannies still have the seasoned campaigners such as the Heney’s, Franklins, Parker’s and Papleys so they have it in them to resurrect themselves. And all too often we have seemingly played teams and individuals into form over the journey. But there has been a change in mindset and a freeing up of possible shackles in recent weeks at Freo and it has led to a more polished display.

It potentially comes down to the midfield battle and the fortunes or misfortunes of Tom Papley.

Jojo is in his element with a couple of press conference sound bites, we’ve tried to make sense of the booing rules and guidelines and the Chief is campaigning for the inclusion of more taunting in the game.

We go through the game in finer detail, cover Suma’s nothingness and come up with a whole heap more bunk which isn’t outside the realms of possibility it may actually be dumbing us all down. But hey, what’s footy without the coinciding nonsense!

Bring on the Swannies and that Milo tin lid of a ground!

318 - Bloods and Crips - America's Deadliest Gang Rivalry

318 - Bloods and Crips - America's Deadliest Gang Rivalry

Today we cover the formation of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang rivalry. How did it get started? Why did it begin in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s? The Crips were founded by two high schoolers named Raymond Washington and Stanley “Tookie” Williams, who formed an alliance to protect their neighborhoods from other young people who were harassing them. And then very quickly, gang violence escalated far beyond beating up other kids with your fists to  drive-by shootings, over 15,000 murders, and controlling much of the nation's drug trade. Hope you find all this info as interesting as I did.

    Get Griff's Buddy Signature

    Get Griff's Buddy Signature

After Griff’s game, we need to secure his signature and get him presenting lectures down at Cockburn on adaptability. Time to Restump Podcast our tough to take loss to the Swans.

Was there a game at Optus on Saturday night or a Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch concert? Marks everywhere! The Swannies racked up 138 marks for the game, largely with our assistance. After quarter time they took 64 more marks than us… over 20 more per quarter.

The warning signs, or should that be Warner signs, started flashing in the second period and the resulting fears materialised over the second half.

After quarter time, the mids copped a bath and that didn’t help the defenders. The wingers provided no outlet or run and the Swans walked the ball out of our 50 metre arc effortlessly.

A young Chad Warner gave us a lesson and who does Errol Gulden think he is kicking goals like that, Disco Nathan?

We can all handle a loss, God knows we’ve had plenty of practise over the last 25 plus years, but it was the uncharacteristic manner in how we lost this one.

So much on the line, so much to play for and disappointingly we fell down in what we stand for, team defence and offensive pressure. To be comprehensively beaten, yet kick the first two goals of the last quarter to go nine points up… an added effort needed to be raised. There was no such raised effort forthcoming. In fact there was little effort delivered, raised or otherwise.

The shining light was the swingman’s performance. Griffin Logue can hold his head up high as he blanketed Buddy Franklin. Had Griff not slipped on the Optus Stadium ice rink, Buddy would have turned in the duck eggs.

But again, this is a successful season. Its far from over and we’ve shown enormous growth to date. As we always say, growth isn’t linear.

The reality is we’re in the embryonic stage of a long period of sustained finals success. Sure, we need some tinkering here there and a bit more up forward, but we’re a solid unit on the up and, top four or otherwise, its highly unlikely we’re not playing finals this year.

So, join us as we put things in perspective, part the problems and pick out the purple positives. They’re few and far between in that game Saturday night but we’re not rolling over just yet.

    Sheriff Patrolling Acres

    Sheriff Patrolling Acres

Is Budweiser than we think? Freddy said, yes you better beerlieve it. Acres returns and Chappy is back. Time to Restump Podcast what’ll hopefully be our 4th win from 4 games against the Swans at Optus.

Given we’re currently sitting a win clear in third heading towards September, we’ve got Acres and Chappy back in the team, the Disco is back up and about and Switta has recommenced running... are we getting ahead of ourselves if we suggest everything is coming up Millhouse?

We’re getting as close to having our best twenty-two fit and available as we’re ever likely to get so it does feel like we’re getting a bit falling favorably for us at the moment.

Currently twelve wins, we probably need at least fifteen to secure a top four finish. With Richmond, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Eagles and Giants to come we need to make Sydney one of those three wins this Saturday night, especially as this is one of our only three remaining home games.

Speaking of the Buddy Swans, they’ve been a little bit erratic this year. They probably haven’t been the steadfast Swans we come to expect but they have a dangerous list and can produce on their day.

However, they were recently beaten by Port Adelaide and Essendon , yet they beat Melbourne, St Kilda and the Dogs so they’ve made it tricky to get a handle on the form.

We have won all three games against Sydney at Optus Stadium, but apart from one of them by 5 goals, the remaining two games we won by 2 points and 1 point respectively.

Worryingly it does appear rain is forecast for Saturday. We don’t want to have flash-flood-backs back to the Gold Coast and Collingwood games but… its difficult not to have a few little nerves. However, let’s stay positive, they’ll don the flippers and snorkel if need be, if it means getting hold of the four points.

We wander into the North Melbourne fiasco and Wayne Carey’s nonsensical suggestion that Ross Lyon is the prime candidate. We have a chat about Buddy attempting to use Freo to beef up his contract again. Trav Colyer and Sammy Switkowski get one year extensions and its difficult not to think Rory Lobb is out and Luke Jackson is in next year.

E309: Rival gang members are brewing up change at TRU Colors

E309: Rival gang members are brewing up change at TRU Colors

TRU Colors Brewing is on a mission to end gang violence

When a shooting took the life of a young man in Wilmington, NC local businessman George Taylor wanted to do something about it.  You likely know some of Taylor's other businesses, like Untappd or National Speed.  Rather than just talking about making a change, Taylor contacted the local gang task force and spent two years getting to know gang members and the challenges they faced.  After careful consideration and identifying some of the roots causes of gang violence he founded TRU Colors Brewing.

TRU Colors has a mission to end gang violence.  Not only by providing jobs but by offering support and education on how to know your self worth.  Fitness and nutrition classes, yoga, counseling, and discounted meals are some of offerings at the brewery.  80% of the breweries employee's are rival gang members.

Spree is the Assistant Director of Marketing at TRU Colors, and an active gang member.  He was serving time in federal prison when he first heard about the brewery and their mission.  With some skepticism, he contacted them to see what they were about.  Spree shares how TRU Colors has made a difference in his life, the challenges faced living in "the hood," the appeal of joining a gang, and how he's taking what he's learned back to his community.

Kevin was working at a local brewery when he heard about the mission of TRU Colors.  He was impressed with their goal and reached out to them to join the brewing team.  Kevin shares with us why he joined TRU Colors, some info on TRU Light (their flagship beer), and what's coming in the future from the brewery.

TRU Light is an approachable beer to bring people together

Deciding on what style to launch with wasn't a tough call.  The humble light lager is an easily approachable beer.  Us beer nerds may think our numbers are strong but there's no question the light lager captures way more people than any IPA or pastry stout.  Kevin tells us the brewery isn't even really about the beer, it's just a vehicle to fund the mission.  That said, they do have some fun collaborations in planning and we're told some hops will come into the mix.

    The Beer List

    • Boulevard Chocolate Ale
    • Good Word Divine Intervention Rice Lager
    • Equilibrium Experiment and Enlightenment DIPA
    • Rupee Premium Lager Beer

    Sayonara September

    Sayonara September

We’ve had numerous chances to secure a spot in the eight in recent weeks with results falling our way and while it is still mathematically possible, sadly it is seemingly sayonara September for the 6th successive season. The Restump Podcast reviews Sunday’s clash against the Swans.

Sadly, we couldn’t get it done for Dave Mundy as the Swans spoiled the great man’s milestone match. We can’t put all the blame on the Swannies though as we were our own worst enemy constantly butchering opportunities. A lack of cohesion and, at times efforts, didn’t help our cause either.

Should Fyfey have played? Hindsight says, probably not, but it seems the club rolled the dice on what looked like their final chance. The surgeon is now calling.

Sean “Swaggy O” Darcy battled on like a warrior but his knee is now restricting him. Do we rest up the big man and get him right for 2022 and say to Lloyd “Braun” Meek, the last remaining games are yours, make them your own?

Andy Brayshaw showed once again why he is a lock for the future captaincy role and while no one knows whether he’s staying or going, we got a reminder that its going to really hurt if Cerra chooses the latter.

Our forward line, admittedly a compromised one, functioned like a machine in desperate need of oil and we got little to no offensive and defensive input from our forward of centre smalls.

Our backs did all they could under difficult circumstances, especially Alex Pearce on a very angry and frustrated and now one week suspended Buddy. No one could contain the magnificent Isaac Heeney though.

The negatives were thick and plenty and they’ll play their part in the season’s end review and subsequent decisions that need to be made. However, there were a couple of very nice positives to dwell on, if only for the sake of us fan’s general wellbeing.

Sure, he may have played his part in presenting Isaac Heeney with mark of the year, but Hayden Young was a sight for clanger damaged eyes. He showed off glimpses of those super slick skills we’ve been severely deprived of. And the oxymoronic named Brandon Walker, not yet a top gun but looking like a young gun, showed a level of speed that Lt Maverick said he was in need of. Speed, skills, evasive tactics….. he’s far from ready but he’s growing in confidence and looks a future jet.

Some big decisions will need to be made soon, with Bailey Banfield, Brett Bewley, Adam Cerra, Reece Conca, Mitch Crowden, Taylin Duman, Stefan Giro, Stephen Hill, Lloyd Meek, Lachie Schultz, Leno Thomas, Darcy Tucker, Tobe Watson and Nathan Wilson all being out of contract at season’s end.

Sunday morning football never feels right but the 10.30am has absolute knobs on it!

All that as well as an episode of the Neighbourhood Watch which feels like the Chief put as much effort into as a Bailey Banfield chase!

So if too much Freo football talk is never enough and you click play on this pod to ease any potential void, get yourself checked out because you’re obviously not well. This 60 minutes should be listened to only as a booster shot. See your ear specialist if listening desires persist.

    We Had A Pact

    We Had A Pact

It’s the Restump Podcast’s preview of Mundy’s 350 milestone match, the clash against the Swans Sunday.

With a one year contract extension, David Mundy upset the immortal Matty Pavlich. “353 games David, we had a pact!”  Pav apparently said.

It’s old Man Mundy’s 350th milestone. Try finding a more humble, unassuming well-deserved recipient. Supremely talented, durable and versatile. Its a rare individual who can genuinely earn a 19th season contract.

While we celebration the great man, we have the Swans clash to focus on. Our chances of seeing September are all but gone, so Sunday must be the final roll of the 2021 season dice.

Blakey Acres is off to the spelling paddock, possibly making way for Nathan O’Driscoll, named to make his debut. And it’s exciting seeing Hayden Young return.

One half, Rory Lobster, of the Crustacean Connection goes out while his shellfish partner Matty Craberner is a welcomed in.

Lloyd “Braun” Meek’s potential inclusion casts doubt over Sean “SwaggyO’ Darcy, otherwise known as the competition’s premier ruckman.

With the Swans potentially adding Reid, McDonald & McLean alongside Buddy Franklin, our backs are in for a tough day.

This game rests with the midfield clearances. If the Bloods get first use, their tall timber may hand us a lesson.

Pav upset the stooges up the road, the Chief’s Neighbourhood Watch segment returns and how disrespectful is being handed a 10.30am timeslot for Mundy’s milestone?

All that and plenty more listening for anyone who is at or from a public or private school or even for those who didn’t even go to school. Evidenced by the drafting of The Chief, the Restump hasn’t got the resources to provide quality listening! But we don’t indulge in discriminatory practices, we’re accepting of all ears regardless of backgrounds, stable homes and upbringings.
